Looks like he did, in fact, die of a complication of COVID-19.

BC

So how many players need to die before they cancel the season?

Yeah, because the guy obviously got Covid and died from it due to football.
C'mon, now (though I admit, that certainly is what the article would like you to believe).

I will take those comments seriously when the person indicates that he or she is pushing for football to be banned (CTE etc). (Not to mention the 30 or so that have died in workouts since 2000) Car racing to be banned. Drivers crash and die ocassionally.  Soccer makes it a rule to wear helmets (CTE) Horse racing is banned - jockeys get killed at times). Skiing to be banned - poor Sonny.  And everything else that contains a chance someone dies be banned. Sitting in our house is fine.  Although there are risks of poisoning electrucion etc. I say all this while still believing they shouldn’t play college football this year.  Because most schools are closed.

Per the latest outbreak in Boulder impacting CU, Colorado yesterday had its highest reported single day Covid infection increase since the pandemic started. The previous high was 608 in July. It was reported to be 611 yesterday.  That's after it went down to under 300 for a few weeks in late August to mid September. The state is now having 5% positive tests, so I'm imagining Boulder is much higher.

Can’t get past the paywall.  Tried to find an article that indicated where he contracted the virus.  Did he get it from a teammate or someone affiliated with football that was around the team

So am I understanding you correctly that there is no evidence that his playing football had anything to do with him getting the virus?

I believe that is correct.  If I am reading the articles correctly, so far as anyone knows, he didn't get it from a teammate, and he didn't drop dead because he was playing football.  All it tells us is that 20-year old football players are not invincible against this thing, even if the vast majority will be minimally impacted.

So he is a young man that tragically died from Covid.  He happens to play football.  But the article is about how it’s “College Footballs” biggest nightmare.

From what you are saying BC, this was a young man that happened to play football who picked up the virus somewhere.  And no other teammate etc got infected.  Making the NYT article essentially propaganda.  Unless the article points out that there is no known connection.

If this is the young man with the clot in his heart, I believe his roommate had a cough. Don't know if the rm was a fb player or not. Didn't sound like it.

You have to read the article closely to NOT come away thinking the guy died from Covid due to football.  That's why I said the article bordered on the misleading.  [Also, I'll take BC's word that the guy died from Covid-related complications, but it does not explicitly state that - at least that I could tell].

It's possible to think that playing college football is "not worth it," especially for the Pac, while still thinking articles like the one linked constitute irresponsible journalism.

RE: There will be no college football this season - BostonCard - 09-25-2020

https://sports.yahoo.com/grieving-parents-share-warning-more-143430826.html

I think that absent the death certificate, it is challenging to interpret what has been made of the cause of death, a "blood clot to the heart", because it is not a medical term.  Usually, when you think of blood clots in the heart, you think of heart attacks, which are caused by blood clots that are formed in the coronary arteries, the arteries that supply blood to the the heart.  As you can imagine, heart attacks in 20 year olds are exceedingly rare.  Blood clot "to the heart" suggests that the blood clot was formed elsewhere and then went to the heart, what is called an embolism.  The problem with that is that an embolism won't typically go to the coronary arteries, unless there was a septal defect or what is called a PFO, which is colloquially known as a hole in the heart, which allows a blood clot to go from the venous circulation, where it is formed, to the coronary artery, causing a heart attack.  The more likely option, and this is well-documented with COVID-19, is that a blood clot formed in the legs and went to the lungs (a pulmonary embolism).  While blood clots (typically in the legs) happen for a number of different reasons, including prolonged immobility (for example knee surgery or a trans-Atlantic flight) or situations that result hypercoagulability (excessive clotting, which can be a genetic condition, or can be caused by cancer), they often a consequence of COVID-19.

A second possibility is that the blood clot formed in one of the heart's chambers.  This typically only happens when either the heart isn't beating properly (for example, if it is in a rhythm like atrial fibrillation), which, again, would be unusual in a 20-year-old or if the heart's chambers are dilated (enlarged), which would be a consequence of severe myocarditis.

The bottom line is that most clinical situations that could reasonably be translated to "blood clot to the heart" would be very unusual in an otherwise healthy 20-year-old and have been well described with COVID-19.  If the exact cause of death could be established, then it would be easier to tie it directly to COVID-19.  The challenge is that if we say "if they meant X, here's how COVID-19 would have played a role; on the other hand, if they meant Y, then here's how COVID-19 would have contributed."  But almost any way that "blood clot to the heart" could have been interpreted, COVID-19 almost certainly played a role.

BC

One other comment, the article states, "His mother said Stephens returned to school in part to work out with his teammates." It would be wrong to assume that because he went back to school to work out with teammates that he got it from teammates.  But it would also be wrong not to wonder what happens in a world where there is no football and he doesn't go back to school for (I presume) voluntary workouts.

More cases in Notre Dame.  Lucky for them, they have a bye week coming up, so you might expect those players to be cleared by their next game.

They probably should have gone the Clemson/Alabama route and tried to get everyone infected early.

Of course it won't matter as the season will be ended prematurely for all, anyway.

Very possible (I'd even say greater than 50%).  And given the wholly anticipated outbreaks here and there, I'm not sure why college football is so dead set on selecting CFP participants before Christmas.  If I were czar, I'd build in a 3-4 week buffer (for postponed games), then have your CFP and bowl selections, and then play those games.  Of course, at some point you have to say Game X is on Date Y and if a team is missing players due to Covid, so be it.  But I'm not sure why you'd lock yourself in to dates until absolutely necessary, though.

Maybe they're worried about getting as much in before the New Year, for school attendance purposes, but still seems unduly restrictive to me.  Maybe TV demanded certain dates for games (but between moving the dates and not having the games, I would think TV would select the former).

RE: There will be no college football this season - BostonCard - 09-29-2020

I disagree.  The season will go on, come hell or high water.

Are bowl games part of the equation this year?  I guess they get most of their money from TV revenue (and sponsorships?) so having empty or half filled stadiums won't hurt their bottom line too much?

RE: There will be no college football this season - magnus - 09-29-2020

Notre Dame outbreak suspected to have been spread from a pregame team meal and/or a player (who later tested positive) on the sideline who threw up during the South Florida game.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30002596/notre-dame-football-coach-brian-kelly-targets-coronavirus-outbreak-pregame-meal-vomiting-player

They're still going to do a pregame meal, but in a convention hall, moving forward.
