We survived the last two games. Wow! We played so poorly for long stretches of time at different points in the tourney. Our defense saved or bacon each time.
I am emotionally drained after this game.

Crazy that we outscored Arizona by 8 in the first quarter, and they whittled away the lead in the four remaining quarters: 16-15 in the second, 16-13 in the third, and 13-11 in the fourth.

Stanford has now set the record for 3 point baskets during the tourney at 59(?). I'd like to see them break their own record in the next few years.

The strength of our team this year has been its versatility. We won some games by hitting 15 treys. We won some games by backdoor cuts. This game we won with defense. And it was ugly. But it was a win.
That last stop of McDonald was not lucky, it was good defense. And as awful as our offense looked--have we had a worse offensive game this year? We nevertheless played one of our best defensive games. McDonald was 5/20, and only 1/11 from inside the arc. We successfully schemed her into a very mediocre offensive player. The trouble was, Arizona did the same to Williams. But Jones Brink and Lexie gave us just enough.
We nearly lost up on fouls, though. Arizona had 13 points off free throws, Stanford had 2. Thank goodness McDonald missed 4 of her 12 free throws.

And yet, with both Williams and Wilson graduating, next year will require a backcourt rebuild.

Point guard is the main position to be replaced. Enough options with the Hulls, Jump, and the bigs.

We were 0/6 from three in the second half, after starting 4/8.

I'm more happy for Tara than anything. If you started following this sport yesterday and you saw the video of Tara's press conference after the Colorado loss, that would be enough to see that we have an elite coach. Perfectly measured response. And now Tara has won three titles in two eras, and done it all with respect and class. I attended a lot of MBB games when I was on campus, though never a WBB game. Perhaps I should have.
We could use a lot more Tara VanDerveers in this world. Not just in coaching. In all positions of power. As in, 100 of them, at least.

Nice to not have that disparity cost us this time. [Cough, Alabama, cough cough.] Though this time it didn't seem unfair, just unlucky.

So happy for Tara. She is the only coach I have ever seen for Stanford Women's Basketball, and it was far too long between team titles.
And thanks to Tara that coveted NCAA team title streak survives.
Thank You Tara!

That's what tough defense does. Both teams playing aggressive defense. Unfortunately some casual fans will see the turn overs and missed shots as a bad quality of basketball by the PAC-12.

So obviously Jones, Brink, and Lexie Hull will start. I imagine we need a point guard as Jones has not shown that she can really be an effective point forward. Hopefully, Jenna Brown is fully recovered and as good as advertised. Then the question is whether the fifth starter is Lacie Hull for her versatility, Hannah Jump for her three point shooting, or Ashton Prechtel for size (would be a gigantic lineup with Brink, Prechtel, Jones, Hull, and Brown).

If that's the same court as the one where Stanford played their semifinal game, Tara needs to take that defensive-end hoop with them. That hoop was very good for us. It deserves to be honored at our hall of fame.

Good thing we don't have a 4th game against UA.
I echo the sigh of relief. My body is still trying to relax.
Excitement will set it soon. =)

I hope next year we develop some plays that don't require such intricate passing. We turned the ball over 21 times!!! Many of those were on desperation backdoor passes that weren't there or the shot clock running out. At the highest levels the defenses are going to be extremely good and you need a player who is going to drive and make a play. Hopefully next year it is Jones with the ball in her hands as the shot clock is winding down.

Let's hope it doesn't take another 29 years! This group provides the nucleus of possibly another championship. Is there a chance Wilson could come back? Williams will go pro, I am sure.
This team, and this coach, deserved this championship. And I think the fans who have screamed themselves hoarse for three decades deserve just a little bit of it too.
I am so proud to be an alum of an institution that has put Tara Vanderveer at the head of this outstanding program, with such outstanding women, who go on to do such outstanding things--and to make absolutely no compromises in ethics or academics to do it. To win a national championship in this era with such integrity, class, and academic achievement is a stunning accomplishment. And that is why I am a Stanford fan.
Thank you team, and thank you coaches, and thank you Tara, not only for bringing us fans a national championship, but for doing it in the right way.
