Jeez, folks, I thought my double exclamation point and question marks at the end of my comment accusing Stanford of lying to me signaled that this was somewhat tongue in cheek. It's not
that big of a deal.
But I certainly agree with what appears to be the consensus: (1) all medals are worthy of celebration, getting five in one fell swoop from women's soccer is an awesome testament to Stanford's program, and I'm excited about every last one; (2) using all medals to compare with other schools seems all good, because it's how everyone does it, and it seems like a better measure of how many
medalists a school is contributing; and (3) the "would rank as a country" puffery is fun and a bit silly yet inaccurate in terms of how the Olympics tracks medals.
The Olympics are the best. Go Team USA! Go Stanford!

USA WVB plays great and blitzes a strong Brazil team 3-0 to win the gold medal.
Foluke now owns all three types of Olympic medals.

The volleyball gold medal also allowed Team USA to take a lead over China for most gold medals at these Olympics.

University medal count, we're #1 in total medals but trail USC in gold medals 11-10
ADD: USC now has 329 total summer medalists and we have 296, so still some more work to do to be #1....

WVB Gold Medal: Give Karch credit for selection of the roster and preparing his team to peak at the right time.
The three primary serve receive players had the highest rating in the tournament. That's the kind of passing Stanford will need this season.
Probably the end of the road for Foluke. On to another career.

Makes sense that she likely won't stick around for the 2024 games given that she's 33, married, has a young child and other career options. But one of Brazil's best players last night was their starting middle blocker, Carol Gattaz, and she's 40 years old!

Oh no. Now that makes the soccer semifinal loss hurt even more.

I will tip my hat to Usc regarding their Olympic tracking website. They count and tout all of their Olympic athletes including those that participated in the Winter Olympics throughout the years, although I don't believe they have had any medalists in the Winter games. They claim more Olympians than any other US university, but I don't believe Stanford has taken the time to actually track down all the information and I know we don't include Eric Heiden's 5 gold speed skating medals or Debbie Thomas's figure skating medal. There may well be other Stanford Winter Olympians with medals. You know sc would include any and all.
I know that Earl K in the Stanford AD was very good about tracking Olympic stats. It seems like we could put some student interns into action tracking down all former Olympic athletes with Stanford affiliations. We are clearly closing in on SC and while I applaud this year's Stanford website, I would love to see us get more stats out there regarding our former Olympians, both Summer and Winter. As usual, sc does a good job of tooting their own horn even though we have clearly taken the Olympic momentum over the last 40-50 years. 26 medals is a great accomplishment so hat's off to the 2021 Stanford Olympians!

here's a website (download the spreadsheet linked in the article) that has US college Olympic participants noting their years of competing and medals one as well as affiliation with primary, secondary, and professional school (as appropriate)

If you look at the medals won from the country where the athlete lives and trains, the US would probably have more than triple the number from China. A lot of olympic athletes that compete for other countries live and train in the USA.

This table is more favorable to Stanford:

Looks like a discrepancy of one silver/bronze for Stanford, but USC comes across with many fewer medals. I'm not sure what is driving the discrepancy.

This seems to be a table of US medalists and their university affiliations. Could USC have a lot of non-US medalists affiliated with them, who would not count in this table?

Correct. Taylor Ruck's silver and bronze are the reason for Stanford's adjusted total. Meanwhile USC had a number of non-US athletes who won medals. Andre DeGrasse (Canada) won gold in the 200 meters, and two bronze medals in the relays. USC had athletes representing Italy, Greece and Spain win medals, and Aaron Brown was on the 4x100 relay with DeGrasse.

That's another point of contention when comparing Stanford and USC (aka University of Southern Croatia) - a higher percentage of their athletes and olympic athletes come from outside the US. I remember how their crooked wopo coach kept reloading with some interesting European recruits when he took over that program.
My guess would be that overall, Stanford has produced more US olympians over the years than any other US university. It should be a relatively easy list to compile and to keep track of going forward. It also wouldn't hurt us in terms of recruiting future athletes and potential olympians. Hopefully the AD will make an effort here.
