RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - lex24 - 01-28-2022

Great story on Elijah Mitchell in the Chronicle.  Small town hero who is humble, not only remembers but cherishes his roots. He wore a special wristband last Sunday.  To honor a high school teammates brother that died at 19 of brain cancer in 2016. He actually passed during a HS playoff game. They learned about his death during the game. Mitchell ran for 331 yards. The QB was the brother.

Also created a special award for a classmate with Down’s syndrome. Eventually they worked out an arrangement with an opponent to let him score. Gave him ball at 20 and Mitchell guided him to the EZ. If there was a dry eye in the stands, I’d be surprised. Heck, I’m choking up as I write.

I’m awfully cynical at times, but I love stories like this.  The good side of athletes and athletics.  Which greatly greatly outweigh the bad. Unfortunately, the bad makes better copy.  And I’m certainly guilty of getting caught up in that.

In any event, read it if you have the chance.

I’ll say it again, to have the guy that presided over the steroid era in and use steroids as a reason to keep players out is the height of hypocrisy.

Schilling should be in also. He failed the popularity contest big time.  But that should have nothing to do with whether he’s in the Museum.

Then there is Jeff Kent.  Who simply has some of the best numbers for a second baseman in history.  But for some reason they don’t count.  In part cause they have decided RBI’s don’t matter.  Yep, try winning without them.  I get it - not predictive.  So freaking what.  If a guy consistently produces runs, that freaking matters.  (So, if you need metric support look at his career RISP numbers.  They are slightly higher than his overall slash line.  An analytic way to determine the guy actually was a producer.) The question isn’t whether he will drive in runs if picked up as an FA by the Baltimore Orioles.  It’s about a career.  And all Kent did is produce at a level few other second baseman have.  But he too was a jerk. Hell, 32%. That’s absurd.

Big Papi was loved.  And he played for the RedSox.  The darlings of baseball, along with their hated rivals.  I guess he got extra points for his fantastic defense.

What a freaking joke.

Totally agree with all of this.  Nine writers left Henry Aaron off their Hall of Fame ballot.  23 writers left Willie Mays off of their ballot.  The career AND season HR leader is not a member of the hall of fame.  Neither is the hits leader, or the walks leader, or the runs scored leader, or the games/plate appearances/at bats leader.  Neither is the #2 (Shoeless Joe Jackson) or the #3 (Lefty O'Doul) batting average leaders.

Kent has the most home runs of all second basemen with 354, 30 more than Cano, 79 more than Sandberg, 82 more than Rogers Hornsby.  But he also had a testy personality.  So he's not in.  Lefty O'Doul did more than any other person to bring baseball to Japan.  So he's not in.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - Phogge - 01-28-2022

I agree about O'Doul who was a great hitting instructor and helped out at Examiner youth baseball clinics at Big Rec.

However I have certain prejudices about charging Japanese infantry shouting "F*** Babe Ruth" especially since they tortured captured Marines at Guadalcanal. Lefty should be in for his bat period.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - lex24 - 01-29-2022

Trent Williams apparently has a high ankle sprain. Hard to fathom him playing Sunday.  Meanwhile, Whitworth is back for the Rams.  Left tackle is always important.  Against teams with great pass rushers, as both these teams have, even more so.

Williams is an enormous loss if he can’t go.  His backup played decent when they played Rams in week 18.  But they now know him a bit.  Condon was awful last week. Those tackles are going to be a major key Sunday.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - Mick - 01-30-2022

there will be a sea of red in the stands at today's NFC championship game:

Why the Rams failed to prevent the Red Wave from attending:

I'm guessing Niners will concentrate on the run.  They dropped WR River Cracraft and added RB Trent Cannon.

Shanahaned it again. Blow a big lead late.

Jimmy's done, too.

Sucks.

Shanahan didn’t drop a gimme int.  Those last two series were beyond ugly.

Rams should have won by two TDS. Completely outplayed Niners.  Stuffed run.  And if they can’t run, they can’t win.

Yes! Go Rams!

I wouldn't say they had a big lead late.  I would say that the dropped interception by Tartt with under 7 minutes to play and the 15 yard penalty on the next play cost them the win.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - Phogge - 01-30-2022

Kupp is a great player and should be NFL MVP. Samuel almost as good. Niners need help at RT and LG. Losing Greenlaw was crucial. Lynch needs to do his homework. They are close.

Who's the coach? Who's team has blown brobdingnagian leads in championship games? Tartt? Garappolo? Jimmy hit the receiver in the hands on his pic to end the game. And yes, the Niners couldn't run. At all. . . .

Can't stand McVey. My daughter has routinely asked if it's okay for a coach to cavort with the refs. . . .

Go Bengals. . .

"has blown of immense proportions leads"

oh the jocularity! I feel so much better!

It was a three point game with 13:30 left in the game.

Ten point lead with a full quarter to go and the opponent having the ball isn't a "big lead late".

Always the coach….

They were outplayed. Rams handled LOS. Niners DBs got whipped all day.  They didn’t get much pressure on Stafford. Defense couldn’t get off field.  Niners couldn’t run.

They led by 10 with Rams having ball at Niner 20 as third Q ended.  Hardly a “h.u.g.e.lead”.  It was a 3 point game with about 14 to go in 4th.   Rams made plays in 4th.  Niners didn’t.

All I heard in the run up to the game, was how much more physical the Niners are and how Kyle was in McVey's head. An LA based reported even asked that during a Rams press conference. The Niners were a fiasco tonight. The Rams not that much better. Kudos to the Ram for getting inspired by the press clippings . . ..

Imagine being a Chief’s fan.  21-10 and you have a first and goal from the one and you get the ball back to start the second half.

One other thought, when did Shanahan go to the David Shaw school of punting from the opponent’s side of the field (on 4th and 2, no less), as well as the David Shaw school of play clock management (I think it was one DoG and one time out to avoid one).

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - Phogge - 01-30-2022

Besides a winning record and a playoff run the difference between Kyle’s team and David’s is that Kyle’s is fun to watch and David’s puts you to sleep (Notre Dame game literally).

I disagree about Niner pressure Lex. Stafford was able to get the ball off quickly but he was battered. Gutty guy who stood in there.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - BobK - 01-31-2022

Well I for one along with my family thought it was a great season. Three extra games In The playoffs. A missed interception by Tartt kept The Rams alive. Great season great clutch wins this year.
Hope we don’t lose our DC again

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - DC 86 - 01-31-2022

Three bad plays by the defensive backfield hurt the 49ers on the decisive final drive: Ward's senseless roughing penalty against OBJ, the drop by Tartt, and Williams missing the tackle on Kupp (and Tartt taking a terrible angle) which turned a two yard gain into a 25 yard gain.

Stafford was the NFL's best QB against the blitz this year (0.61 EPA per play) so the 49ers were just going to rush four most of the time and I thought they did reasonably well (especially Bosa) under the circumstances - they didn't force many throws under pressure but they didn't allow Stafford to just stand back there and find open receivers either, he was mostly releasing the ball quickly.

I thought the decisive factors were 1) LA's fantastic defensive line overwhelming a battered SF offensive line, which shut down the run game and had Garoppolo under increasing pressure as LA realized they could sell out and rush the passer, and 2) SF's poor defensive backfield. Skowronek was way behind the defense when he dropped Stafford's bomb, and Rams receivers were frequently wide open.

KC never got it's offensive swagger back after failing to score at the half.  They had a different feel after the half, even Mahommes mentioned it
