Don’t know about snarky but you did omit anything related to  Mulkey’s coaching ability or her teams record or skills.  Worse yet you  left out observation that  she didn’t go to Stanford, doesn’t live on the West Coast and speaks with a Southern Accent.  It’s really embarrassing that they let “those people” into womens basketball.  I mean, like you said, they don’t even know how to dress and they don’t talk like we do.

What’s the phrase for “ rude, overbearing snob” in Palo Alto?

i'll speak up for mulkey's accomplishments: high school valedictorian, 3 national titles as a coach, 2 national titles and the naismith award as a player. lsu 9-13 before mulkey arrived; 26-6 since.

and i'd much rather play against a mulkey team than a team coached to knock our players down. i'd certainly rather play lsu than texas. who cares how mulkey dresses? vic schaefer teaches his players to flop! that gave us fits when he was at texas a&m and again earlier this year against texas. if we get past maryland, i sure hope the refs are prepared to t-up all the flopping.

I think many people on this board, myself included, could never forgive Mulkey for how she treated Brittney Griner by locking her in the closet.

Before I knew about that, I regarded Mulkey as an eccentric but effective coach and did not feel strongly about her one way or the other except wanting to beat her.  But yes, I have utter disdain for her now, on account of her being a bigot--or at least being afraid of bigots--who  was too cowardly to let her player publicly reveal her identify.  Think of the good that might have been accomplished had Griner been allowed to come out with the support of her coach.

Contrast that with Stanford's campaign from that same era:

If so, not exactly a fair recounting by you, Bob.  And remember, not everyone can be as enlightened as we Stanford fans - a burden we all have to live with . . .

Ah, so now I get it.  We’re not angry at Mulkey because of her dressing habits and certainly not because of her coaching skill .  She has  , at least according to one news piece, dared to differ from our accepted dogma for the “correct” belief system. “correct “ means she agrees with us.

I guess that what passes for “inclusion”.   Frankly, I don’t know or care much what a coach’s political or religious or cultural beliefs are but others can do so if they want.  That’s your privilege.  But you look very small and very bigoted when you hide your beliefs behind criticisms of the way a woman dresses or of her being to aggressive and showy on the sideline.

I thought we moved past that kind of bigotry in the 70s.  Apparently I was wrong and that is all of our loss as human beings.   I appreciate the honesty, though.  It’s refreshing.

You may be pleased to know that I have no more to say on the subject. I think we’ve smoked out the reason behind the “snarky” attack on Mulkey and since it has nothing to do with basketball, i don’t look for guidance on this site.

I did t quote any of those you claim. After winning the national championship Mulkey announced we don’t have no gays here

I like the way she dresses

Do you have a link for that?
I've searched and only found things that are along lines of what I previously linked.

And then this about perspective of another player.

BTW, I'm not saying you're wrong - and I have some vague recollection of something being said along the lines of your summary, but memory is a funny thing.
Anyway, there ought to be a link/story supporting your statement, don't you think?

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - Softball Fan - 03-24-2022

I don't like the sideline antics of Mulkey.  I don't like her attitude that every official's call against her team is a bad call.  Prior to this thread I knew nothing about Mulkey's background and didn't care to know.   There are other coaches whose sideline antics I don't like and I'm not interested in their background.

In the event any of the virtue signalling on this thread was directed toward me, I don't live in Palo Alto.  I don't live close to Palo Alto.

For the record the student population of Stanford is one of the most diverse in the country.  There have been national polls that ranked Stanford #1 in diversity of students.  Palo Alto is very diverse from wealthy to poverty.  I don't get the stereotyping of Palo Alto.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-24-2022

I didn't know about the other issues, I commented because of my antipathy for her tacky clothes and her courtside demeanor.   I don't understand why a woman basketball coach would ever wear high heel shoes at a game, especially one that paces the sideline as much as Mulkey.

After watching a few LSU games this season, I also think she coaches her players to jump into defenders when driving to the hoop.

FWIW, I recall Lindy almost always did, and Kate sometimes does too:

With both Kim and Muffet, I've always had very mixed and conflicted feelings about them. I liked Muffet a lot for what she brought to the sport and contributed off the court, but I thought she was a terrible loser and tolerate so much flopping and dirty play from her players.  With Kim, it's almost the opposite - I think she coaches solid teams and is generally pretty congratulatory of opposing squads, including Tara. But her off-the-court stuff has been loathsome at times and the jacket tossing, while vaguely amusing, it also just kind of insane from a role-modeling perspective.

As usual, this conversation mostly just makes me even more grateful for the coach we have. :)

Ah yes, the last card played by the close-minded.

(It wasn't that big of an ask, Bob, especially since I have a faint recollection myself of something around this general topic at Baylor.  You could have (a) provided a link supporting your story, (b) relayed that you could not find same but have distinct recollection of it because _______ (details), or © raised the possibility that perhaps you're misremembering).

I guess it's just easier to $hit on someone's reputation and just say "I'm right."  If we all employed this tactic, it would make for a livelier Board, that's for sure (maybe an ill-informed one, but who cares?).

Whatever.

Thanks.

Baez87 - Baez87 - 03-24-2022

Well, I’m excited!
I’m sitting in the Seattle Airport awaiting the short flight to Spokane. I’m eager to see our WBB team display their skills on the basketball court and focus their passions on the game. As fans, we can learn a lot from the way our players leave it all on the court!
Let’s get behind them, put our energies on the game, and let our actions and words be mirrors to these young adults.
Go Cardinal!!!

For sure.

I believe he is referring to the statement made in 2012 as to whether she has ever had a gay player on her team: “Don’t ask me that. I don’t ask that. I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. Whoever you are. I don’t care to know that.”

When ESPN reporter Kate Fagan wrote Griner's coming out story, Mulkey tried to get her fired.

...and in 2017 in response to Baylor's massive sexual assault problems by its football players: "If somebody's around you, and they ever say, 'I will never send my daughter to Baylor,' you knock them right in the face." She later apologized.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-24-2022

#5 NC vs #1 SC  -- 4PM tomorrow (Friday 3/25)

This could be a good game.  Can the Tar Heels knock out the Gamecocks?  NC is coming off an 18 point victory over AZ.  SC is coming off a dismal 49 point offensive output against Miami.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - Leftcoast - 03-24-2022

So any thoughts on Texas vs Ohio State?  Who's going to win and who do we WANT to win?

We lost to Texas in the third game of the season 56-61 in the lowest scoring game of our season.  This fits Texas' reputation as a defensive oriented team that can take offensive juggernauts out of system and win in close games.  Ohio State is on a bit of a roll after advancing to the Big 10 tournament final and knocking LSU out in the 2nd round.

I probably should prefer a game against Ohio State in the regional final but I'd love to see Stanford avenge that early season loss.  I think we would have won that game if it was played later in the season after our offense gelled, our PG play solidified, and players better understood their roles.  Of course, Texas can say the same, Lauren Ebo didn't score in the earlier game and they've had Freshmen emerge as key players in the intervening months.

What do the WBB experts here think?
