Kittle with a groin injury. Not practicing. . . .

My prediction, Niners defense is stout, the running game struggles. Lance gets over-confident after an early touchdown then throws a couple of bad picks. Gets dinged up after running one too many times and exits early in the 4th "out of an abundance of caution". Jimmy hits Aiyuk on a quick slant and he takes it to the house. Niners win 17-16 and the controversy ignites . . . .

You play as stupid as the 49ers did you deserve to lose

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 09-11-2022

The penalties gave the Bears a chance.

Even before the heavy rain Lance looked confused. Jimmy’s strength is his timing and precision on passes over the middle. Lance has little “touch.”

When healthy all Jimmy did was win.

I suspect Jimmy would have won today's game.  Very difficult conditions.  At least Lance's learning curve should be nearly vertical at this point.

I was enthused by some of what I'd seen.  I actually think he'd have done better and the Niners would have done better in a more normal environment.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - cardcrimson - 09-11-2022

I didn't watch much of the game and none of the second half, but I can tell by the stats and box score that the 49ers lost.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 09-11-2022

Timid and weak game plan by Shanahan today.

He didn't allow Lance to throw much when the weather conditions were bad but not impossible (as it was in 4th quarter). He said "we felt like we were in control when it was 10-0," demonstrating a total lack of respect for the Bears and Fields that fed the passive approach on offense. But the defensive penalties were really, really bad.

Shanahan thought he could grind out a victory relying on a strong defense and run game, and basically not use the QB much. The Bears took away the run and the defense gave away enough (two completely lost WRs for 2 TDs) to put the offense in obvious passing situations in bad weather.

Lance was not the biggest problem or the reason the Niners lost. Deebo Samuel had one catch for 6 yards. Though he ran the ball well, you need more from your All Pro WR.

Was hoping to be able to make an assessment of the team after one game, but can't. The timid game plan, abnormally high number of defensive penalties, and the awful weather conditions haven't answered any questions for me. I'll reserve judgement until after the Seattle game. When is last time Niners lost a game they ran for 176 yards?

I thought you had already made your assessment based on practice and pre-season games.

Yes, give him a strong running game, protection and a good to great defense and he will win.  But he’s extremely limited. Lance provides an upside.  Whether he gets there is an open question.

The Niners played incredibly stupid in the second half.  Several big and dumb penalties.  The weather was hideous and the o-line’s pass protection was poor.  But I will say this, a couple more like this and the noise will be deafening.

Nothing personal Lex but you are a Lance man. To put him in charge of a playoff team with such limited experience is a brobdingnagian mistake. I don't think you were around for Tittle/Brodie. The guy they didn't pick became the MVP and on to the Hall. The other guy was not as successful though he had a good career.

Hope I'm around to be proved wrong.

And could find gold nuggets just by looking at the stats. . . .

Not a Lance man, actually.  Just don’t think JG is very good.  Shanahan and Lynch bet the farm of Lance. Time will tell if they were right.  If not, they will pay the price.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 09-11-2022

Lance needed another year of watching and learning. The 49ers are paying a price. Good defenses with sharp coordinators will stifle him.

Nope. In fact, I was attacked for not having an assessment of how the Niners would do this season after the pre-season games.

It was frustrating to have the first game be so marred by terrible weather, an oddly passive game plan, and so many mistakes on defense that rendered an otherwise dominant showing on that side of the ball moot. Really tough to evaluate much from such a set of circumstances other than no team is good enough to overcome so many basic mistakes with a game plan where the head guy felt in control with a 10 pt lead. Not exactly smart from a guy who OC'd a team with a 28-3 lead in a Super Bowl and lost, blew a 4th quarter Super Bowl lead as a Head Coach, and also blew a lead in the 4th quarter of the last real game he coached, the NFC CG.

Trey Lance was good enough to win the game if the team around him didn't make so many crushing mistakes and he was given more opportunities early when the conditions were less worse and the offense had maximum ability to keep the defense guessing.

Deebo Samuel at camp and close to getting his new deal after DK Metcalf - with same agent as Samuel - signed his yesterday.

Free Agent CB Charvarius Ward is turning heads and Richard Sherman says Niners Secondary should be as good as the 2019 unit.

Rookie Spencer Burford has taken all 1st string reps at RG through first two days of practices and Daniel Brunskill has only repped at Center?

Brandon Aiyuk poised for breakout season.

The Defensive Line is LOADED and Javon Kinlaw seems healthy for the first time, poised to make an impact.

Niners may have the best Linebacking unit in the NFL.

Trey Lance looking and sounding comfortable as the starting QB. Never has there been more anticipation to see a new QB on an exceptionally talented roster in Niners history. Reminds me of when a top recruit starts at QB as a RS Frosh in college.

If Lance can just be a game manager, the Niners should be really good and win 10+ games.

You do realize we have access to your old posts, right?  Yesterday doesn’t preclude the Niners winning 10+ games, but they would have to show some significant improvement to be considered “really good”.

Yes, that post makes my pre pre-season assessment of things look informed, but I'm not able to take much away from Game 1 for the reasons already mentioned. The DL is loaded and Kinlaw is looking good. I believe the broadcasters on the game talked about the Niners' LBs as perhaps being the best in the NFL. Aiyuk is still poised for breakout season. Can Lance manage a game the defense doesn't constantly screw up with mental mistakes? Probably. But I also want to see Lance be given more opportunities to manage and the weather conditions precluded that in Game 1. Therefore, Game 2 will now be more like Game 1 in terms of making an actual assessment of the team.

I'm guessing we'll see a much better and complete performance in Game 2. I also think Shanahan not having McDaniel for the first time in a decade had to have an impact to the negative and that will be mitigated over time.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 09-12-2022

“If Lance can be a game manager...” They didn’t draft him to be a game manager. That is Shanahan’s job with an inexperienced QB. Their game manager QB was on a headset.

Many times yesterday we heard about the “Super Bowl quality roster.” Still boggles my mind that you turn over that roster to a kid who played one season of 1-AA football.

Speaking of which, Mac Jones suffered a back injury yesterday. Jones was 21-for-30 for 213 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He was sacked twice and hit three times overall by the Miami defense, including a strip sack that Miami picked up and returned for a six-yard touchdown.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 09-18-2022

Lance gets another game with bad weather and without Kittle.  If they are behind going into 4th, Phogge may get his wish.

Niners are not going to be patient.  You can be patient with a young QB if you have a non-contending team. But Niners are built to win now.  So, I think Lance is on a relatively short leash. Tough position for him to be in.  Not his fault that they made that trade to move up and draft him.  Be easier if JG wasn’t lurking.  But he is.  So, here we are.
