Stanford vs Cal at 6:00 pm today; televised on PAC-12 Bay Area. Stanford 16-0 at home this season. Cal leads series 54-33.

Stanford walks off Cal in extras 2-1! Cardinal may have gotten a bit of a favorable call to overturn a video
review at the plate, but Stanford will take the W, and improve to 33-9 on the season.

Yeah, I feel bad for Cal. I think they got screwed. Maybe the umpire wanted to go home.
I don't know why Cal stayed out on the field during that final review. Whether the call was safe or out the inning was over.

I didn't see enough on the replay to overturn the out call.
When I saw the runner just rounding third when the relay player caught the ball, I thought that the runner would be out by a mile. The play was actually closer than I thought but still thought the runner was out.
For whatever reason, we caught a break.

Watching the replays from various angles, it appeared that the hand of the runner slipped under the catcher's glove just enough to allow the fingers to touch the edge of the plate before that tag. Yes, it was a very close call, but I think the right call.

Game 2 vs Cal; Saturday afternoon. Cal up 3-0 middle of inning 5. I believe all three runs were earned runs charged to Vawter.

We were sitting near a former college softball catcher and we are close and she thought exactly what maple left said.

Stanford dropped a tight game 2. Cal freshman Elon Butler carried the Golden Bears,
hitting a 2 run home run, as well as scoring their other run after a triple.
Alana didn't have her best stuff today unfortunately.
The offensive struggles continued, and Coach Allister actually made some changes in the game
to jump start the lineup.
Hopefully, Stanford can win the game and series tomorrow; a loss would be a big blow to the top 8 seed hopes,
with Texas coming off a home sweep of Oklahoma State, Florida State continuing to surge, and Duke playing
some good softball (albeit against weaker competition).

Stanford needed every contribution to hold off Cal for the series and game win (3-2 was final score today).
An absolutely massive win keeps the Cardinal in the hunt for a top national seed.

A couple of walks by Cal's relief pitcher helped out. Stanford bats continue to struggle. It's becoming clear to me Stanford has some weaknesses that make for a gap between them and the very best teams. I think the start of the season put my expectations too high.
Right fielder Clements had a ball drop out of her glove on an easy, routine fly ball. Can't have errors like that happen.

Clements is usually the DP not a RFer
Don’t know what the problem was with Lim pitch hit for her first AB then scored the winning run as a pitch hitter
The cal 3B is outstanding. Spencer the cal coach has continual conversations with the umps Boo
Stanford is 10-8 in league play 2 games out of 3rd place

Lim has really been struggling at the plate recently, and even earlier this season, when she was hitting for average, the power has unfortunately not been there (and she has been one of our top HR hitters previously).
Like Lim, I wonder whether the starters are tired from playing most/all of the games. The depth is getting better as young players like Kyra Chan emerge, but to take SF's point about us compared to very best teams, our team is just not as deep in terms of hitting depth (pitching depth we match with the best in the country).
The lineup honestly looks tired from watching this weekend.

I am going to be frank: Clements was playing out of position (defensively, she is a catcher). I think it was a poor defensive adjustment to have her play RF by the coaching staff, and we unfortunately nearly lost because of the unearned run.

Yes that substitution was hard to figure when you are in a very tight game and want no mistakes. I think the biggest issue was mentioned earlier, our hitting, or really our lack there of. Our pitchers are good, and one may become great, but we are asking too much of them to constantly win low scoring games where we get behind early. We do not seem to be a long ball hitting team at all and are getting by on bunt singles, and more singles. very rare long balls and speed of our runners.
