I am not sure how bad it needs to get for Haase to be fired, so.....

I understand some of the concerns about an interim coach, but potentially it could be announced soon that this is Haase's last year.   I hope Muir is already looking for new coaches, but a formal announcement might improve the pool of candidates a bit.

FWIW - I feel sorry for the players on this roster.   They are better than this coaching, and they deserved an AD that would have insisted on giving them a chance at success on the court.

There were no great years under Haase. There weren't even any good years. Never even got a whiff of a tourney bid. Bye Felicia.

I consider Haase's second season a relatively good season. 
Winning overall record. 
Winning Pac-12 record. 
Made it to 2nd round of NIT.
But yes agree nothing great.
And if that's the peak of your highlight reel it is pretty brief movie.

Agree takes a pretty high bar to fire coach midseason and put in an interim coach.
But I think that bar is crossed already.
Yes, many issues raised by doing so.
But I think it is actually the best thing to do for these players right now.
Otherwise you telling them:
Yes we see you struggling.
Games are not going good.
And we'll make a change... eventually... but gonna have to let you stew in it for the rest of the season. Sorry.

TWANG...... Braxton Meah just dunked again.  And according to unsubstantiated rumors, he did it two more times last night during my drive home.

Yeah, that's right - I was in attendance at that circus in person.  You may be wondering what possessed me to go there.  I'm still not sure myself.  Perhaps I just have a sick and twisted love of pain.  What can I say.

I'm not too surprised the season isn't going well. What I'm surprised about is just how legitimately horrible we are. This isn't mediocrity anymore - it's a full-blown dumpster fire on par with the football team.

I was there too. At least the Husky is very cute. 

But seriously, I woke up in the middle of the night because I had a fragment of a dream where I’m watching the game from the stands and Haase suddenly grabs his head and tears off a big rubber mask and, a la Mission Impossible, he turns out to have been Dick DiBiaso wearing a big fat suit. Obviously, I had to get up and go have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to calm down.

Triangle I don’t think I was thinking of DiBiaso in my sleep but sure did during the first half. Then realizing they are the same didn’t bother to watch the second half.

I'm in the "fire Haase right now" camp.  But is there any precendent for Muir firing any coach mid-season?  I only pay attention to a few sports, so I'm not up on most coaching changes.

Based on who was coming back, and the experience on the team, I really thought this would be a big improvement year.
But it's a combination of bad & long droughts on offense, and a frequently frozen deer-in-headlights collapse on defense,
where in Alphonse and Gaston fashion, one of our guys says "you may cover him", while the other politely says "no, no, after you, I insist",
that has this team looking really bad any time they've played anyone halfway good

UW and Cal are not even halfway good, except when we made them look like world beaters.

Muir hired Haase. Do we really think he’s gonna have better success this go around finding a new head coach. I doubt and question Muir’s leadership so will wait and see. Maybe he gives Haase another year. God I hope not but Haase should have been gone after last year and yet here we are again. Another year another missed NCAA tourney. Our program is a dumpster fire.

This debacle of a season is on Muir. He should have fired Hasse at the end of last season. Six seasons is enough to see what you have in a coach. Hasse simply cannot coach offense. I will not watch another game until he is gone.

I am opposed to firing any college coach midseason because the team is not doing well, no matter how bad. For me the only reason to take such a drastic measure is misconduct of some kind. There are always exceptions - like if half the team went to the AD - but as a general matter I think it doesn't really do any good.

I guess that's the fundamental question - what good could possibly come from firing Haase right now as opposed to the end of the season? Everyone already knows he's gone after the conference tournament already.

Does "everyone" include Muir?

I see a benefit to the players to inject some Hope energy and fun the rest of the way. And big picture if they enjoy the rest of the season they might not walk out the door. 

The downside is Muir picks another hoops coach.  Maybe wait in the hope he moves on. If that’s a possibility

Muir is about 9 right one wrong on picking coaches. Keep that in mind
If the assistants didn’t like Haase’s direction they would be helping to change it before now

Bob.  I respect your knowledge of Stanford sports and have loved your contributions here over the years. You are right he has hit in some hires.  But he came in as a basketball guy and then stayed way too long with Johnny d and then had stayed way too long  with the current coach. Once proud maples is a joke. And he showed no apparent leadership as football went down the tank over the last few years. 

I’m sure the assistant coaches support their leader but would also be shocked if a new guy given an opportunity to shine didn’t have some new approaches that could help, especially on the offensive end.  Those assistants are coaching for their careers as well. Plus at least short term assistants who have likely been closer with the players could get all the oars rowing in the same direction.   Fresh start. 

I don’t think these kids are getting a fair shake as things stand.  Maybe they really are not any good. But if we do nothing we will never know.

Well basketball guy or not the Buck stops with Muir and help from his top people in the AD. I thought Haase was an excellent hire. I was so wrong and I’d like to think if me I would be on the tarmac when The team comes back
So who would be the assistant who takes over ??
Who would be the next hire ? I’m all for Mad Dog. Cohen would be interesting
Chris Weems? Mitch Johnson ? Jarron Collins? Hiring Fri. The outside hasn’t worked in a while
Allister and Esquer are doing great jobs.
So hiring a Stanford person can work as Shaw did until he didn’t but three Rose Bowls.

Muir should really interview any good candidate regardless of where they went to school. As for Shaw, he ain't called "Davey Coattails" for nothing: Bob, I think you could have taken those Stanford teams to the three Rose Bowls with those rosters and group of assistants...but might have won the game against Michigan State!
