Comparing anyone, currently playing anywhere in the NFL, to Montana, the second greatest QB in NFL history (behind only the San Mateo kid) is beyond premature.  It is crazy. Montana is on the 49er Mount Rushmore.  Purdy has just begun his journey.  If he stays healthy and continues on his current path, he should reach base camp in a couple years and then he can begin his ascent.  In a decade or so, we can talk about Purdy’s career and his place in history.  Until then, Montana stands alone - four rings and countless amazing performances mean something.

He will be the GOAT by game 13……

One thing I’m interested to see is how he and the Niners in a game where they are down in the 4th late and have to score.  No reason to think he/they  will not be  up to the challenge.  Still, I hope it happens here soon.

Classic trap game this week. (I think you already said that).

Also, I’m a little tired of cheap hits on McCaffrey.  He’s had three major grab and pull face masks, one each last three weeks.  It was on either his first or second carry vs the Cowboys. .  (Then later there was the helmet shot).   Personally, I think players should be tossed for the grab and pulls.

I think word has gotten out that Deshaun Watson isn't playing and PJ Walker is. Line opened Niners -4.5 and is now up to -7 Thursday morning.

I didn't realize that PJ Walker was their third string quarterback. They're on their third QB in six games.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - lex24 - 10-15-2023

Well, this is not going well.  4th quarter gut check.  They have been beat at LOS all game. Deebo out. McC probably out.  Time for defense to step up big time.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - lex24 - 10-15-2023

What a bad loss.  Lose two key players. Line gets dominated. FHOF QB plays poorly. Bad calls lead to Cleve FG.  Third round kicker misses kick to win it.

Loss is bad enough.  Losing Deebo and CMac is much worse.

Typical 49ers let down game.  They spent all week yapping about the Cowboys.  Lousy game all around!

The 9ers OL collapsed with false starts, holding, etc.  The rain was also a factor, with Brock losing the ball and not having a seemingly good enough grip on a few passes (incl the INT).

49ers game physically dominated. Which you do not see very often. More than anything else that was the reason they lost that game.

Finally. someone made them pay for not having a dominating OL.

They looked great on the first drive and pretty good on the second. Caught bits and pieces of the middle part. Officiating didn't help them, at all. The no fumble, intentional grounding call especially. While it was close, what no one seemed to noticed is the he released the ball right on the yard marker, and it landed about a yard behind it. While his arm went forward, the ball went backwards. . . .

Agree that the line hurt them. Badly.

J E T S Jets Jets Jets. They take down the Eagles. Like the coach, like the attidude.

Niners were lucky to be close.  They were physically dominated.  Lost badly at LOS.  Browns 334-213 in yards.  Only thing that kept it close was the poor play of a third string QB.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 10-16-2023

All the elements of a classic trap game:

1. Emotional win over the Cowboys.
2. Browns had an extra week off (and it showed).
3. 2,500 miles travel.
4. Game started 10 a.m. body clock time.
5. Rain
6. Tight opponent's defense

RE: 2023 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 10-16-2023

I agree with Richard Sherman's take on the Niners' ignominioous loss in Cleveland. I also agree with Nick Bosa, Trent Williams, and Fred Warner's assessments.

Sherman said he was encouraged by the game, not because they lost, but because it was a really, really tough game, they faced all kinds of adversity, and were a typically made FG miss away from a victory. He also pointed out the Gipson hit was not a penalty, btw.

Bosa, Warner, and Williams all said the Niners didn't deserve to win.

Hard to tell which team was more frustrated by their loss in Week 6, the Niners, Eagles, or Giants. For different reasons they all lost games they really should have won, whether they deserved to win or not.

The Eagles turned the ball over 4 times, and lost a game against an offense that had to be gifted a TD (Eagles let Jets score a TD so they couldn't run clock) for them to get in the End Zone.

Have you ever seen a team lose a game because it failed to score any points from the 1 yd line on the last play of both halves, as the Giants managed to do? Amazing.

FHOF Brock Purdy had a bad game for sure, but his was no worse than anyone else on the offense. Brandon Aiyuk did make some big catches on the final what should have been game winning FG drive, but he also had two very key drops, one difficult catch that would have resulted in a TD if he reeled it in, and another one that just went off his hands that would have got the Niners out of the shadow of their own goal post in the 4th. Kittle had 1 catch for 1 yd. Not a great game for the OL for sure, but they managed to do enough to put the Niners in position to win.

I thought Kyle Shanahan called the game scared in the second half when the run wasn't working. It was obvious the rain and wind caused Purdy trouble in the first half, but when the weather improved, it was like Kyle only saw passing didn't work well in first half so he focused on that, and not the impact the weather had on it. He refused to allow Purdy to drop back with 4 WRs on the field when the run wasn't working. He insisted on having Juszcyzk out there and having a run threat. I thought the pass protection was better than the run blocking and Purdy should have been given more opportunities to move the chains with straight drop back passing that put more pressure on the pass defense. Hell, the way that (awful) ref crew was throwing flags, you'd think you'd want to take advantage of their no tolerance flag throwing on DBs.

But whatever, all that said, if the ball was kicked straight on the last kick, it goes through the uprights and the Niners are the only 6-0 team in the NFL.

Probably just one of those games, but Purdy's performance was so mediocre you hope it's not an omen.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - lex24 - 10-16-2023

To me the big concern to take out of this game, besides the injuries, is that a team that prides itself on physical play got destroyed physically.  The o- line got smoked. But Cleveland does have a very good defensive line. Bigger concern is they gave up 160 yards rushing to a team playing a third string QB that could not hurt them downfield and whose premier RB is hurt.

If the Browns had just blown out, say the Bills to go 5-0 last Sunday night and traveled to London to play I don't know, the Cowboys with Cooper Rush, you would likely have seen a similar outcome.

When an entire team isn't at its best, it points to a team-wide hangover and malaise. That's why the fact they still almost won is encouraging to Richard Sherman, as long as Moody rights himself and doesn't go in to a slump that costs him his job.

The only reason they almost won is because the Cleveland QB played like the third string/practice squad player that he is.  Niners did not make a first down in second half until that last drive. They won’t have Deebo and CMac for a while.  And the defensive line has yet to perform like expected this year.

Obviously this is a very good team.  But yesterday hurt in many ways.  Monday at Minnesota will be a big game.

Couple last note.  Job 1 for an NFL kicker is nailing that kick.  Moody had an opportunity on last play to win preseason game on a shorter kick.  He pushed that one as well.  Although it was barely good.  It would not have been from 41.  Niners have to be concerned.

Also, they left 14 points off board in first half.  Ayuck should have caught what was Purdy’s best play and throw of the game.  Not an easy catch.  But one he makes 8 out of 10 times.  DB was on ground, falling after trying to break up the pass.  So, he probably scores.

And Purdy threw an awful pass missing a wide open McCaffey in the second Q.  Shoukd have been an easy TD.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - gocard14 - 10-16-2023

Ugly game all around. But there is a reason teams just don't go undefeated in the NFL. There is too much talent and too much randomness that can happen.

If you were discussing the circumstances in which to beat a great team you'd describe it like yesterday.

On the road, early start time, in the rain, against an elite defense with an extra week to prepare, coming off a brobdingnagian/emotional win.  And we still came within one horrible unnecessary roughness call and one missed field goal from a win.

I'm also not surprised our Oline struggled. I was expecting them to be an average Oline this year, and they've been playing above the level until yesterday against probably the best D in the NFL.

My only concerns moving forward are:

1. Injuires. We need CMac and Deebo, but especially Cmac to be healthy to be an elite team.

2. Purdy and weather: Purdy really seemed to struggle with his grip in these conditions. Hopefully it can be sorted out, but that could come back to bite us in the playoffs. It also makes it all the more important to secure home field.
