The team Kurt plays on is a professional team in the best league in Turkey. She is the youngest player. There are players in the 20s and 30s on the team from Brazil and Russia. I don't what the compensation package is but it's has to be pretty good.
If Kurt is getting paid does that impact her eligibility for playing on an American college team?

If Kurt is getting paid she can’t play here. Of course then she also wouldn’t be thinking of playing here. So almost certainly not being paid

This was back in 2005. There was a Cal player, Mia Jerkov, who played for the Croatian National Team. She received a stipend along with travel expenses from her National Team. The NCAA ruled it was an acceptable amount of compensation. I believe the decision was based on the fact Jerkov did not sign a contractual agreement. Possibly the same rules would apply to Kurt for her play on a professional team.

Athletes in professional European leagues who harbor NCAA ambitions will have to decline payment. They are allowed only "routine expenses".

Cal is mentioned (for a different foreign player, from Turkey):
Quote:In 2000, Nihan Anaz left Turkey to sign with South Carolina’s women’s basketball team. She had played from 1997–1999 in a league that the NCAA classifies as professional.
“Her eligibility was not a problem because she didn’t get paid,” South Carolina’s Walvius said.
Anaz played a full schedule for South Carolina in 2000–2001, left the school for personal reasons, and played a full schedule as a sophomore in 2001-2002 for two years at Weatherford College in Parker County. She then signed with California.
Cal’s compliance director, Fody Mellis, looked into Anaz’s background and told the NCAA that she had played on a team supported by a professional organization.
“She had to sit out some games,” Mellis said. “She should have done that at South Carolina, and they never held her out.”
It appear that at least some of it is open to interpretation from compliance specialists.

I remember with Cal's Jerkov a big issue was the NCAA relied entirely on the school to do the due diligence and report any questionable compensation. The NCAA would not spend resources pro-actively looking into every foreign athlete's compensation history.
I recall back at the time many VB fans complained vehemently Cal was using a "professional" player. As long as everything is done above board (which I'm sure it would be) I would love to see some of the obnoxious vb fans get bent out of shape Stanford has a "professional" on it team.

Rules may have changed, but I thought at one time just playing on a team with other players who were paid could disqualify an athlete from playing NCAA.
I recall that two men's VB championships were voided due to ineligible players being involved (though I don't recall all the details).

That rule was changed back in 2010, since then there have been a number of prominent NCAA basketball players who played for professional teams in their home countries (obviously not being paid themselves) prior to enrolling in college here.

On another concern, I understand from some VT posts that Kurt's school in Turkey is academically rigorous and holds most of its classes in English. So her chances of admission and of doing well at Stanford should be okay.

I heard L. Smith has been practicing with the team and can play tonight against ASU. Can anyone confirm that?
To anyone attending ASU match; your observation of Oglivie demeanor on sideline would be appreciated. I'm sure the TV announcer will make some generic comment like Oglivie unavailable tonight for undisclosed reason.

That has to be a good sign, I would think. As I see it, the Stanford concussion protocol doesn't allow for return to full practice until 5 days after the event (which would be today), assuming no concerning symptoms. With any luck this means she plays on Sunday.

We took the first set 25-17, keyed in by a 4-0 run going from 10-11 to 14-11 and then never looking back. ASU has no answer for Kipp (5 kills in 6 swings with one error) or Francis (4 in 7 with no hitting errors). Five to 1 in blocks also helps.
Let's keep this up through three sets this time!
