RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 09-07-2024

Texas lost (in five sets) at Miami (FL).  They are now 2-2.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - paloalto - 09-08-2024

My guess for tomorrow's AVCA poll:

#1 Pitt   #2 Penn State  #3 Stanford  #4 Purdue ? (6-0 on weak schedule)   #5 Nebraska ? (4-1 weak schedule except getting swept by SMU)

This weeks ranking should be interesting and, for me, is impossible to predict top 10.  It's very up in the air.  Pitt is 3-0 with their only good win against an overrated Oregon (#10).  Penn St beat Tennessee (#17) and Kentucky (#9 -- 3-2) on the road and Louisville (#4) at home.  I think Penn St deserves #1 beating 3 top 20 teams and being undefeated.

Where to put Stanford?  Wins against Wisconsin (2-3 with their two wins in 5 sets), Minnesota (1-3 with their only win against Texas) and Marquette (lost today to Western Michigan) don't look as impressive now as they did preseason.  Should be ranked in top 3 or 4, but could be anywhere.  Our big tests of where we fit nationally at the moment (and we will be better in November) are our upcoming matches against Texas, Nebraska and Kentucky, all top 10 teams now that have each had bad losses.

I'm curious where they put Louisville (beat Wisconsin, ranked 6th, and Tennessee, ranked 17th with only loss being swept by Penn St in State College PA), Wisconsin (2-3 with a 5 set win over TCU and a 5 set win over Baylor, and losses to Texas, Louisville and us) and Creighton (undefeated and play Nebraska on Tuesday).  Since it's the coaches who vote, I would expect Texas to remain top 5 because they are the team to beat after consecutive national championships and returning a superstar and also Nebraska, another predicted powerhouse.

I would go 1. Penn St, 2. Pitt, 3. Stanford and absolutely no idea after that with the top 10 including Texas, Nebraska, Purdue (no reason to move them up or down as they haven't played anyone), Wisconsin and Creighton (I think will be bumped up).  Intriguing to think about.  I care most that Stanford keeps developing and Blyashov plays some this week before the UT match.

I am thinking of going to Pepperdine to watch the match on Wednesday. Any other Cardboarders going to be there?

ACC dominance.  With big Miami and SMU upsets, ACC should have a good RPI at this point.

Kami Miner ACC Setter of the Week   September 9, 2024

This week:

vs. #24 Marquette     14-4-36   .278   2 SA      16 pts     (3 sets)

And that she is also very lethal as a RS hitter.
Plus an equally lethal serve.

I really feel that she has what it takes to be a Stanford WVB all-time great.

I hope she continues to play heavy minutes even with the return of Julia BLYASHOV
from injury. Maybe divide time with BLYASHOV at OH2 and also as a reliever for HARVEY
at OPP.

Just a minor quibble... Rubin is the OH2 (the passing outside, next to the oppo) while Kurt is the OH1 (the hitting outside, next to the setter).

SMU is a bit of a weird case - the win over Nebraska should absolutely help their RPI - but they also have losses to Hawaii (RV) and Loyola Marymount (UNR). The good news is that SMU has some other good matches that can pad up their resume including #18 Baylor, #10 Kentucky, and potentially #7 Purdue before diving into ACC play. It's still mind boggling that they beat Nebraska.

There's been upsets a plenty in the volleyball world with Texas following up a loss to Minnesota by losing to Miami to fall to 2-2. It's going to be wild to see how seeding/hosting plays out given some of the big names losing matches they wouldn't normally lose.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 09-10-2024

Stanford at UC Santa Barbara today at 7:00pm PT on ESPN+.   UCSB's 2-4 record is deceptive.  Three of the four losses were against ranked team.  Also they beat USF.   It should be a competitive match.

Hambly has plenty of non-conference scheduling options.  There is always a reason he schedules teams.  I have no idea why he chose UCSB.   Anyone know?

Speculation - looking for a competitive match on the way to Malibu where Stanford plays defending WCC champ Pepperdine tomorrow. Also UCSB won the Big West last year.

A road trip to SoCal gives the families of SoCal players a chance to watch their daughters play without a 6-8 hour drive. Can't count on road matches at USC and UCLA any more.

You could very well be correct.  I remember Dunning took the team to UC Santa Barbara the senior year of Carly Wopat so family and friends could watch her.

I'm guessing Hambly and team will travel tomorrow morning to Malibu which is about a 90 minute drive and then play at 6:00 pm.

Years ago I got the trivia question right at the post season banquet
Question. Wopat 10
Answer?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 09-10-2024

Stanford off to a good start against the Gauchos.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - mbdude - 09-10-2024

not exactly rolling over them

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 09-10-2024

Stanford up 17-15 started out 9-3.

24-22

Stanford wins set 1  25-22.   I believe Blyashov is not wearing a boot but not dressed to play. Not sure about that. According to livestats Rubin hitting .000 so far.

Set 2, Stanford up 13-6.   Pringle gets some playing time.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 09-10-2024

Stanford wins set 2.
