Totally. Ten is a lot. We could end up with 11 or even 12 depending on what they do with Jake Hornibrook and Zahran Manley. Maybe trying to push more players ahead in the pipeline and allow for bigger classes down the line. Some of them have been by necessity, too. Spencer Jorgensen is interesting in that he has lost his shirt as a walk-on! I wonder if that has ever happened before...

Some of those “burnt” shirts can be recovered in a later year, either because of injury, or because we will have some luxury to be able to do so.

Good point. A la Foster Sarell, Donald Stewart, Connor Wedington, and now probably Andres Fox.

Curtis Robinson last year too. Technically JJ Parson could redshirt as he's only played 4 games, but surprisingly we actually need attrition to fit what should be a pretty-close-to-full recruiting class. Fox is definitely redshirting due to the position switch to full-time OLB/edge rusher. He's healthy. If I had to guess, he'll play the final 4 games as a situational pass rusher and preserve his shirt.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - Spiny_Norman - 10-27-2019

I was at the game and saw both Higgins and Manley get regular snaps. I believe Higgins was lined up on the right when Costello threw the quick screen to Peat on the left in the 2nd half. And I definitely saw Manley in the secondary. I had to consult the roster when I saw an unfamiliar number. Eboh seems to have dropped so far that 2 true frosh are playing ahead of him.

Eboh too slow, I think. Arizona has a bunch of small, quick WRs.

Higgins played a bunch, on O (no targets yet though) and STs. Manley played here and there on D. Herron played a bunch of snaps in the 4th - wondering on his RS status.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - Phogge - 10-29-2019

most if not all the plays when Higgins was in were runs. Must mean he can block.

He plays on punt cover (blocks the gunner) and KO (blocks the gunners) too. Big and athletic (basically JJAW size already), but raw on WR technique.

Stanford/UCLA and Stanford/Arizona Walk-On Union Watch - Langdude - 10-30-2019

Hey all. I am afraid that, due to some life busyness, I got a bit behind. So here's two games' worth of Walk-On Union Watch.

Thanks for these as usual, Langdude. I didn't watch most of the UCLA game (hell, who did?), but for Arizona: Caleb Phillips, Anthony Trinh, and JJ Parson all played snaps on D. Stuart Head was actually pulled in favor of Parson on a drive. Trinh saw some time at OLB more commonly in coverage (Toohill, Kaufusi, Reid, and later Herron and Phillips mostly rushed the passer/contained the edge)...keep in mind we're out 2 Foxes and Umerah. It's pretty damn clear Caleb Kelly is a dud. I'm 99% sure Brock Jones didn't see the field on D.

Thanks, SMF. I will make notations in the list above. You are always so good at noting what players are in, even on ST...

(I also could not stomach watching the entire UCLA game on DVR.)

Stuart Head missed at least three second half tackles. WTF is going on with tackling technique? Brutal!

I noticed the same thing; from what I remember they all happened on the same drive. Arm tackling generally doesn't cut it at this level. Clearly Akina noticed too; Head was pulled the next series.

Stanford/Arizona M*A*S*H Unit - Langdude - 10-31-2019

M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against the Wildcats due to injury. Other notes...

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - Phogge - 10-31-2019

What’s up with Donjae Logan? Staff had been high on him but has not suited up past two games.

  • Past injuries
    • CB Treyjohn Butler, sr., missed six games. I forgot to mention that he played his first game against the Bruins.
    • QB KJ Costello, sr., missed four games.
    • S Stuart Head, jr., missed four games.
    • DT Bo Peek, sr., missed one game. I wonder if he is injured again, or is just benched.
    • OT Foster Sarell, jr., missed one game.
    • WR Donald Stewart, sr., missed seven games. Played for the first time this season!
    • S Kendall Williamson, so., missed one game.
  • If this list is correct, that's 110 player-games missed due to injury, an average of 13.75 per game.
  • I think I got all injuries. Any corrections are, as always, welcome.
  • Any injuries from the game?

Peek benched/third string. Stewart was never hurt - just recruited over.

Robinson and Maddox both banged up in the game. No report other than "questionable" for now - thank goodness for the bye week.

Likely injured, but unsure what happened; he played STs in our first 4 games. Zahran Manley came in for a few series when we had 3 CBs on the field, though usually our nickel was McGill. I was very curious about that, seeing as Obi Eboh was our starter to begin the season and now isn't even CB #3????

I don't recall staff liking Logan (that's not to say they DISLIKED him, of course), but do remember them being quite high on Ethan Bonner, who suffered another injury in camp. Massive bummer. Both those guys were track demons in HS; very athletic. Though Kyu Blu Kelly was even faster.

Stewart was never hurt the whole season? Really? For some reason, I thought he was. I swear someone had relayed that information. Are we sure?

And if any railbirds can confirm Logan as injured, I will correct.

Stanford/Arizona Frosh Force - Langdude - 11-02-2019

Frosh Force. Thirteen true freshmen played against the Wildcats. Ten of them have had their redshirts burned; no new burns this week, though Zahran Manley will probably have his burned next week, and Jake Hornibrook the week after. We'll see what they do with Stephen Herron.

  • OLB Stephen Herron played in his second game of the year, but did not record a tackle.
  • WR Elijah Higgins played on ST and on offense; Despite playing in all eight games this year, he has not yet had a ball thrown to him.
  • OG Jake Hornibrook played in his third game of the season, starting at RG.
  • RB Austin Jones had his most active game of the year, carrying the ball seven times for 33 yards, and caught one reception for 11 yards. Austin has played in all eight games this season.
  • S Brock Jones, a former walk-on, played in his seventh game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
  • S Spencer Jorgensen, a walk-on, played in his sixth game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
  • CB Kyu Blu Kelly started at CB for the fifth week, and had a solid game, recording a PBU, and four tackles. He has played in all eight games this season.
  • CB Zahran Manley played in his fourth game of the season on ST and on D; he did not record a tackle, but seems to have become the team's third CB, or at least co-third CB with Obi Eboh.
  • S Jonathan McGill played on defense as the starting NB for the fifth straight week. He had a good game with 4 tackles, including a TFL, and had a PBU. He's played in all eight games this season.
  • OT Barrett Miller played in his seventh game of the season, starting at LG.
  • RB Nathaniel Peat carried the ball once for two yards, and had one reception for nine yards, and also had a tackle on ST. He played in his eighth game of the season.
  • OT Walter Rouse started at LT for the seventh time. He has played in all eight games this season.
  • P Ryan Sanborn, a former walk-on, had probably his best game of the year. He had five punts for a 43.8 yard average, with three 50+ yard punt, and one downed inside the opponent's 20. As the team's current kicker, he also had two FG (33 and 21 yards) and handled 8 kickoffs for a 64.9 yard average, with six (!) of them going for touchbacks. He's played in all eight games.

Thanks again, Langdude.

Re: Herron, keep in mind we're down 3 OLBs right now (Jordan Fox and Tobe Umerah injured [I saw Umerah in a boot at the game], Andres Fox redshirting). My guess is staff still wants to redshirt Herron and is relying on at least 1 of the 2 injured guys coming back within the next couple games. Worst case, Andres can play in 4 games and still preserve his shirt, so assuming we make a bowl we can play Herron next game, play Andres in the last 3, then have both available for the bowl.

Re: Sanborn, he had a fantastic game on STs. He had 1 shanked punt that he'd love back, but otherwise an excellent day - the other 30-something yarder was in plus territory late in the game, caught by Osiris St. Brown at Arizona's 10. Bailey sure spoiled us for a long time, and I look forward to Sanborn doing the same for the next few years.

Side note: Gracey is...not a good holder. Multiple holds with the laces towards the kicker. Again.
