Here’s an opinion on the Giants trades. Two A’s and a B minus.
Good analysis I think. And we agree on the melonhead.
The Ringer rates the Giants' trades as "Mixed Bag." I don’t think the writer understands what Farhan had to work with here:
1) The Giants are still in contention, so he couldn’t give away any of their big pieces like Bumgarner.
2) The Giants have salary cap challenges, so they had to dump as much salary as they could, particularly the Melancon contract, but also the others. I figure the Giants will save $7.0 to $7.5 million against the cap this year and $25.5 million next year.
3) If you look at the year in general, but in particular the past 30 days, the only real failure among the eight starters is Panik. Farhan got Gennett, a legit all-star coming back from a pulled groin. If he doesn’t work out, Dubon was Milwaukee’s #3 prospect.
4) Farhan needed to provide for the future, and he got two very young, very promising pitchers, and two promising outfielders coming back from physical issues.
5) He gave up three pitchers, but also got Dan Winkler, who’s 3-1 this year and should do better at AT&T – and besides, from 2016-2018, he had a 1.117 WHIP, about as good as Bumgarner’s.
Bleacher Report gave the Giants an A for the Melancon trade (gave the Braves a D) and an A for the Pomeranz trade (gave the Twins a C).

All in all, I think Farhan had a damn good day. And you should see his letter.

Dyson was resurrected by the Giants. Good luck to him. Maybe a World Series.

Ouch. Down 10-2 after 5 innings. SF pitchers were Rodriguez, Suarez and now some guy named Selman. Kind of like a JV game. Crawford with a bases-loaded, 2-out error that led to the first 3 Philly runs.

And Sam Dyson enters the game in 9th with Twins up 4-1 at Marlins, and promptly gives up 2 walks, 2 hits, and 3 runs before exiting without recording an out. Luckily for him, the game went to extras.

I said pre-deadline I trusted Farhan. I think he did a terrific job. The Pomerantz trade was remarkable to me. And dumping Melacon’s salary and getting players? Didn’t think that would happen. I’ve always liked Gennett. Hopefully he helps.
But storm clouds on the horizon. Dickerson on IL. Bats slowing down. And right now it’s “Bum and the Shark and pray it gets dark.”

My guess is Farhan wanted to trade both Bumgarner and Smith. But when they made a run, it made it almost impossible. So he bit his lip and made the best deals he could with his secondary and tertiary assets.
No one here is a bigger Giants fan than me. But I suspect when all is said and done they end up about 79-83. And that may be optimistic. I hope I’m wrong. But I don’t think so.
Farhan did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. He still has improved the farm system. But the inability to do what I’m relatively sure he wanted to is a setback in the rebuild.
Getting rid of Melancons contract may help if they want to take a shot at Bum long term. I’m hard pressed to think more than 3 years. And that won’t do it. They are somewhat boxed in.

The Mets have now won 7 in a row and are 12-5 since break, with 3 of those losses being in extra innings to the Giants. I’m going to assume the Mets, with their - best in MLB - starting rotation of Syndergaard, deGrom, Wheeler, Matz, and Stroman, are going to pass the Giants in the wild card standings, maybe even by Thursday. They are 1.5 GB of Giants and have 7 against the Pirates and Marlins while the Giants have six against the Rockies and Nationals.
The Giants play nothing but playoff contenders in August, who all have more talent, IMO. I get why they didn’t trade Smith and Bumgarner, but I don’t believe it was a wise decision to keep them. I hope I’m wrong and they at least secure a wild card spot on at least one day this season but I don’t see it happening.

Ok. So while I agree that they are a long shot, I don’t agree that it was unwise to keep Bum or Smith. 1. 2 1/2 out. You dump and you alienate the fan base. And the clubhouse. 2. Qualifying offer for at least Bum will net them a pick or two (or maybe they resign him - especially after freeing up money by dumping Melancon. 3. We don’t know what was offered. I doubt anyone offered their top major league ready prospect, or major league players. As you saw with the other pitchers that weren’t traded - especially elite relievers - teams mostly held. I just don’t think the offers were that rich. Greinke and Bauer were the exceptions. But neither were rentals.

The key to Bum and Smith has always been they are free agents. Getting a top prospect was probably possible but only if their new team had a shot at signing one or the other
Frankly I was more worried that Smith would be the new Atlee Hamacker if I spelled that right after his all star game HR then a couple more after that game.
The Mets are better because their GM played at Stanford as did their special advisor.
Right now we need better health and good to very good pitching from Anderson and Beede

Selman was the phenom in the minors the Giants had to replace Melancon and Dyson. So far, a 9 era. . . .

Tyler Austin DFA, so he is gone. He wasn't a player the Giants could use, so better that he doesn't eat up a roster spot. Duggar called up, why I don't know. They had two openings, so somebody was going to get brought up. Gennett was also activated, so we will see if he can help. We need all the offensive help we can get with Dickerson on the injured list. We need Longoria back real soon, because Dickerson was a key to our offense being borderline adequate. Somebody needs to take on that task while he is out.

Selman gave up a run in one inning, Moronta a run in 1/3 inning, Anderson 3 runs in 5 innings.
BTW, new Giants spurred the RiverCats to a 4-3 win. Jaylin Davis went 3 for 3 with two doubles, Dubon was 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scoreed.
