I agree Gail. However he did date a porno star but I have no daughters. It is going to be ticklish if he doesn’t pass a physical after surgery.

Those “flawed teams” generally had a top flight defense, an excellent running game and one of the best offensive minds in football at the helm. He has intangibles. No question. He’s also, at best, a mid level QB. Which everyone knows. So, the Niners roll the dice. Lance may be able to raise the level considerably. Or not. But if you watched the playoffs can you truly say JG is in the realm of any of the QBs that were in the final 8? Well, Tannehill I’ll give you. But you saw what they did. And you saw what beat them. A brilliant young QB that can make plays. Tell me ONE time you saw JG get out of the pocket and make a play. Heck, most of the time when that happened they were lucky he didn’t throw a pick six.
The Niners did very little offensively in 3 playoff games. And a good part of that was the limitations at QB.

Took the needle. Same way Trent Williams played with a torn up ankle and elbow.

One other thought, when did Shanahan go to the David Shaw school of punting from the opponent’s side of the field (on 4th and 2, no less), as well as the David Shaw school of play clock management (I think it was one DoG and one time out to avoid one).

KC never got it's offensive swagger back after failing to score at the half. They had a different feel after the half, even Mahommes mentioned it
H.u.g.e. Mahomes admirer. But he had a major brain fart at end of half. That pass has to go into ez to a receiver or through the goal posts. Just shows even the best have their moments.

Minor nit: as soon as he determined that Kelce and Hardman weren't open he needed to throw it into the ground at someone's feet, if he throws it away in the air the clock would have run out.
And he had major brain farts at the end of both halves. At the end of the game he took two horrendous deep sacks which made for a longer field goal, and was quite careless and fumbled on the second one and was very fortunate that his OL recovered it. Very uncharacteristic all around but he really was not himself starting with the sequence at the end of the first half.

Tell me the last time the Yorkie Niners had a QB take them to a Super Bowl and then an NFC championship game in two out of three seasons?
And draw the accolades of the entire roster. To be sure, JG is not Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, Murray, et. al, ad nauseam. So what? He can't help much when his coach channels Stanford's HC/OC at the Turning Point Of The Game. Can't wait to see how long it takes the

Rams should have won by two TDS. Completely outplayed Niners. Stuffed run. And if they can’t run, they can’t win.
Who's the coach? Who's team has blown of immense proportions leads in championship games? Tartt? Garappolo? Jimmy hit the receiver in the hands on his pic to end the game. And yes, the Niners couldn't run. At all. . . .

Always the coach….
They were outplayed. Rams handled LOS. Niners DBs got whipped all day. They didn’t get much pressure on Stafford. Defense couldn’t get off field. Niners couldn’t run.
They led by 10 with Rams having ball at Niner 20 as third Q ended. Hardly a “h.u.g.e.lead”. It was a 3 point game with about 14 to go in 4th. Rams made plays in 4th. Niners didn’t.
All I heard in the run up to the game, was how much more physical the Niners are and how Kyle was in McVey's head. An LA based reported even asked that during a Rams press conference. The Niners were a fiasco tonight. The Rams not that much better. Kudos to the Ram for getting inspired by the press clippings . . ..
Loved Madden as a coach. The knock on John was that he couldn't win the big one. One AFC championship, one Super Bowl, while acquiring the best regular season record around. Shanahan seems to choke in pressure situations . . . .

1. I don't know why anyone thinks if Tartt makes the INT, SF wins. Why? They did nothing in Q4 offensively. Let's say the 'Niners get the ball at midfield (a good run back after the pick). 3 and out is most likely outcome. The best argument for why it may have altered the result is the effect on Stafford, who would then have had 2 brutal/costly picks. Maybe that rattles him. Maybe. But to say SF wins for sure with a pick there is a pretty big leap.
2. It's easy to pile on Jimmy, and I agree he did not play like an elite QB in the playoffs. And I certainly would get rid of him/his contract. However, if he gets the surgery and is healthy, then I think he can be a really good QB in the NFL. When he was fully healthy with the 'Niners, he looked great (won those 5 or so games) that led to big contract. Then he blew his knee, and since then it has largely been one thing or another. Of course, maybe that's Jimmy's ultimate rap - it's always some kind of injury hampering his ability to play in peak form. We'll see. But if Jimmy lands in a good spot, could be interesting to watch him next year.
3. As for Shanahan, I've said all along he needs a "sanity check" voice on basic, big picture calls. Running on third down against GB was such a time (they called timeout and evidently Shanahan switched from a passing play to a running play - had to be done); not running against Seattle in first game with them in Super Bowl year was another time; and there have been a few others over the years. On Sunday, you have to go for it on 4th and 2 in LA territory. (And more importantly, you have to know you're going to go for it and call plays with that mindset - though he got it to fourth and makeable, which is good). In Atlanta Super Bowl, iirc, you can't snap the ball with 10-15 seconds left on play clock up 25 points. Those kinds of things. Shanahan is an excellent offensive mind and can scheme people open like few others in NFL history. I don't know if he is a "choker" as a coach - that seems a reach - but he does need Big Picture help. And to get that, it starts with Shanahan recognizing that he needs that help.

He did have a RT who was limited and a LG who is barely adequate. I guess the jury is out on Banks but they do like Jaylon Moore. McGlinchy is back and helps the run game but is questionable in pass protect. Perhaps Skule can play guard. Mack may or may not come back. They need a big play safety but with no #1 for two years forget it. Perhaps Hufanga can become one of those new hybrids. If Mostert is healthy he and Mitchell can be devastating so Wilson could be thrown into the Garrapolo deal. Williams is a capable slot guy but he, like everyone else in the NFL, can't cover Kupp. They still need help at corner.
Of all the backups I like Mariota. He's been a starter.
On to baseball.
Time for the Union and MLB get their act together and remember what happened in 1994. The public will ultimately return because they are sheep but the aftereffect will last awhile and sour a bunch of people.

In the Atlanta SB game against NE, didn’t he call a passing play when Atl was in field goal range late in the 4th quarter and a FG would have iced the game? Matt Ryan was sacked, taking them out of field goal range. Then Brady was able to drive NE for the tying touchdown and eventually the OT win. If my memory of that play sequence is correct, that would be, in my opinion his biggest “need a sanity check/big picture view” moment.

It's impossible to know what happens if Tartt catches the ball, but it's not entirely accurate to say that SF did nothing offensively in Q4. They gained 36 yards on the drive that ended with the punt on fourth-and-two. If SF had gotten the ball around midfield they only need fifteen yards for Gould to be in FG range. One first down and three plays would have taken time off the clock, puts SF up by three (assuming Gould makes it) and puts LA in the situation that found itself in: deep in their own territory with the opposing d-line selling out on rushing the passer.
Possibly SF goes three-and-out but also possibly they get three first downs and LA doesn't even get the ball back or gets it back with almost no time left. Either way the dropped interception was a major swing in win probability given the amount of time left in the game.
Having said all that, SF should have gone for it on fourth-and-two; perhaps negative emotion got the best of them after actually losing yardage on the two running plays after having second-and-one. SF's inability to run the ball was the story of the offense, not Garoppolo.

Shanahan addressed the 4th and two call today. He was prepared to go if it was 4th and 1 but after seeing two consecutive runs go nowhere, he felt punting on 4th and 2 was the prudent call. In essence, he indicated that LA’s ability to control the LOS was the determining factor.
As I watched the game, I said punt so I can’t say that I would have gone for it……

That's what I meant by negative emotion. After being stuffed twice Shanahan lost confidence, but in reality the upside of making a first down there is enormous, they should have figured out their best play and gone for it.

Rams had stuffed two straight runs. And when you get right down to it, he didn’t trust JG to make the play. Different story if they had success running, But they didn’t. Not a good situation. JG was 3-9 for about 30 yards. Similar numbers in SB 4th. Plus he missed a gimme TD. Check his playoff numbers. Dismal. Yeah, they win NFC in ‘19. He threw 8 passes in Title game. Channeling Bob Griese.
When you don’t have a QB that can make a play. 4th and 2 becomes problematic. At best….
