Ironic it will be for 49er fans yelling we want the old guy.
For years we want Brodie when Tittle was the QB. We want Montana over Deberg some Young over the aging Montana

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 09-18-2022

The stupidity coming out of Niners media coverage has reached a level of only matched by national political media.

Trey Lance has started 3 games as an NFL QB and he has 3 first time starters - two with one NFL start - in front of him at LG, C, RG. Moreover, Lance only played one season in college.

Lance needs to start 4 straight games before he can really be judged, but even then, it’s going to take a couple years to see his true ability. If Garoppolo starts ahead of him, that timeline will be further delayed.

If the rest of the team was great and Lance was responsible for losing, then maybe there is an argument to be made he isn’t ready. The team around him was not great in week 1. Singling out Lance as the reason for losing is only credible when that is the case.

Did you watch the game, or are you just judging by the stats again? Did the team overthrow a wide open back up TE at the 10? Did the team throw a boneheaded pick? Did the team look uncomfortable in the pocket and make poor decisions on when to throw, to run, or to dump the ball?

Interesting commentary this week from Tim Ryan. Lance has a very long windup and delivery. At this level, it is critical to get the ball out quickly, and the longer it takes to get the pass off, the quicker the throwing windows close. Lance, because of his slow delivery, has to read the situation much more quickly, than say Garoppolo, who has a lighting fast delivery. He's not there yet. Not close. Ryan's words, or at least his thoughts, as as best as I can remember them.

Way too soon to tell on Lance, though as Phogge mentioned, do you really turn the keys of a fast car over to someone who just got their license?

And FWIW, I was a Mac Jones guy as he seemed perfect for the Niners: he'd already led a great team and knows how to. Now Jones is driving an '86 Isuzu pickup. Will be interesting to see how he does.

That’s starting to sound like the football equivalent of the Friedman unit.  The next three games will be critical to evaluate Lance…

Had to look that up. Nice!

Love they shortened it to FU. "How many FUs will be required. . .. "

Totally agree with the comment by Tim Ryan that Lance has a round delivery which takes longer than JG's quick delivery and thus a quicker decision is necessary. It can be fixed with practice, but certainly isn't fixed yet. When he has time, it enables him to throw longer bombs than JG.

Not stupidity at all.  They aren’t going to give him 4 games unless they squeeze out wins.  Period.  This is not a rebuilding team. It’s a team built to win now.  Not two years from now. If he doesn’t, he will be benched. If he wins today, no matter how it looks, he will stay in starting role.  If he plays poorly against what is not a good team, and they lose to go 0-2 (against two below average teams) the calls for JG will be deafening.

I’m not a JG fan.  Made that clear.  Hoping Lance plays well and shuts people up. But if he doesn’t and they lose, we very well could see a change.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - cardcrimson - 09-18-2022

And Lance is down. QB draw for three yards. No idea the injury, but a hard hit. On a late replay, looks awful, he's taken off on a cart. Really a shame.

Going to be tough for Garappolo. Two weeks of practice with the team, probably not getting a lot of reps, either.

I thought I read Garapollo couldn't throw outside the numbers. . ..

FWIW Garopolo is 8/11 for 106 yards and a TD, and the Niners are up 20-0 with about a minute left in the half.

Air cast = broken bone.  Surgery is next.  Lance is done for the year.

Agreed. Hoping for a quick recovery.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 09-18-2022

Niners with a 27-7 victory.  Garoppolo was 13/21 for 154 yards, 1 TD and a rushing TD.  Was sacked once.  Trey Lance ran three times for 13 yards.  He runs like a fullback, heads down.  Probably worked out well his single year in the FCS division.  Not so well in the NFL...Lance was carted off on the driving stretcher, broken ankle, out for the year.

One oddity: Lance and Garropolo had virtually identical passer ratings, though Garoppolo had a QB Rating of 60.6, and Lance's QB Rating was 51.2.

Defense didn't give up a point and took the ball away on two interceptions and a two recovered fumbles. Bosa, two sacks and two tackles for loss and five QB hits, Givens three tackles for loss.  Special teams was excellent, except Seattle ran back a blocked extra point for a touchdown. They gave up 15 yards yards per carry on three kick returns and zero on the only punt return.  Gould was 2/3 on FGs and 3/3 on XPs. Wishnowsky averaged 44 yards on three punts, two of the three inside the 20. Jeff Wilson and Deebo Samuel, very impressive, Brandon Aiyuk did well, Tyrion Davis Price unimpressive.  Danny Gray targeted twice, no catches.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - old spanish trail - 09-18-2022

I thought Davis=Price did ok. Two good runs and maybe four for 2 yds or less.

I still say that Lance won’t finish out the season. Purdy takes over and is MVP of the Super Bowl. Book it.

And Shaw is national COY.

LOL

I should have backed up my Lance line with a Vegas special bet.

I was shooting the Lance run tight. I rolled about a seven minute take from huddle to cart leaving field. Watching Lance run I realized at this time he’s more a single wing tailback than a QB. Guys like Paul Cameron, Billy Kilmer and Joe Francis ran like Lance, head down behind their OL. They also were their teams passers as the QB was actually a blocking back positioned behind a guard.

I like Lance’s size but as somebody said on the drive home show on the radio he invites contact while Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson have a slippery way of avoiding a big hit. To survive he should average about five carries a game rather than 13. Otherwise he becomes Robert Griffin.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 09-19-2022

I thought the Bears game was an anomaly in terms of running Lance, due to the weather. Man was I wrong.

Just can’t believe Shanahan is foolish enough to build an offense running QB power and other runs into heavy fronts.

Lance needs more experience so the game will slow down for him and his reaction  to what he sees speeds up. That only happens with reps throwing, not running between the Tackles, and the running creates high injury risk.

Shanahan cited Josh Allen to defend running Lance so much, as he appeared defensive when reporters rightfully questioned the wisdom of running a QB so much.

If I were Lance’s agent, I’d be calling John Lynch today and ripping the bark off him for putting my guy at so much injury risk by running him like Derrick Henry, and retarding his development as a passer.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - cardcrimson - 09-19-2022

Heard this morning from Ian Rappaport, that the play was a RPO, and Lance obviously chose to run. He also mentioned that Lance was a running QB when they drafted him, so that's the type of play he was expected to play. . . .But nevertheless, the Oracle has spoken.

Didn't I hear somewhere of the brilliance of Shaw's new RPO offense? Is McKee destined for the same?

Lance suffers from playing very little over the last few years, and not having substantive major college experience...he was injured last year, now injured again, but worse.

I really don't  want to see either McKee or Lance injured. To me, the magic of mobile quarterbacks is their ability to escape trouble rather than run for brobdingnagian chunks of yardage. My memory of Montana was that he was slippery, rarely running for long gains, but he avoided sacks pretty well.  His sack percentage was 5.5%, compared with Steve Young who had a higher sack percentage (around 7.4% for the Niners, if memory serves).
