No disrespect for BobK, but no, he couldn't. I think Stanford fans should respect what David Shaw was able to accomplish during his tenure as head coach. Being head coach of a D1 football team is an extremely difficult job. There are many examples of coaches taking over successful programs and failing right out of the gate. Shaw inherited a strong program from Harbaugh and took it to a higher level. Give the guy his due. He respected the program enough to step away when he felt that he could no longer lead it back to elite status. Not many coaches do that, but rather wait to get fired.
IMO, it's fair game to condemn Shaw for allowing the program to fall apart with poor recruiting and poor staffing. Hate him for that and drag him over the coals if you want. But don't take away all the good things he did for this program and hand them to Harbaugh. Shaw had this program competing at the highest level in his 5th and 6th years as head coach. In his 5th year, we won the Rose Bowl and finished the season ranked #3.

So who would be the assistant who takes over ??
Who would be the next hire ? I’m all for Mad Dog. Cohen would be interesting
Chris Weems? Mitch Johnson ? Jarron Collins? Hiring Fri. The outside hasn’t worked in a while
Allister and Esquer are doing great jobs.
So hiring a Stanford person can work as Shaw did until he didn’t but three Rose Bowls.
Muir should really interview any good candidate regardless of where they went to school.
+1 Limiting yourself to Stanford grads is dumb. There are no Stanford alums who have a long-term track record of winning right now. Just a bunch of assistant coaches and guys like Madsen who have done okay but not great over a few seasons.
We should hire someone who has a proven track record of winning as a had coach at some level. We got burned with Dawkins (assistant under a great coach) and Haase (good record over a few seasons at a small school). We should be looking for someone who has a much better resume than either of those two. Having "BA, Stanford University" on that resume shouldn't give anyone bonus points.
What's the big advantage of having an alum anyway? That they won't leave in a few years for greener pastures? I would much rather end up with a Harbaugh situation where a coach uses us as a stepping stone--we'd still be left with a great recent record making us an attractive destination for coaching and recruiting.

Marty, I have no "hate" for Shaw. I met him once and he was as nice as can be. Really liked my interaction with him.
But, no, I can't give him much if any credit for those first few years. First, he didn't take Stanford to a "higher level." Stanford was ranked 4th in the country following the Orange Bowl victory. Now, I won't BLAME Shaw for not elevating Stanford - that's going a bit far - but he certainly didn't take them to a higher level. More important to this discussion is that he let the program go into the dumpster fire. And, I believe the only reason he resigned was because he knew his reputation was in tatters - as you probably noticed, the national media FINALLY began to call him out late in the season. Moreover, it's not out of the question that Muir might have given him a gentle push along the lines of, "David, we need to make a change but, of course, this will be positioned as a resignation."

Cool, back to basketball.
Game at Wazzu at 5pm. Anyone know what Stanford's longest losing streak to start conference play is? We have to be getting close, no?

We went 2-16 in conference in 1992/93, but we won our second game so that’s not the worst start.

This year is the worst conference start since 1984. That team lost its first 6, then beat UW and WSU at home, beginning a 7-game conference winning streak. They finished 8-10.

Cal led for awhile and by 2 with about 20 secs. Missed front end of 1 and 1 and Wash tied it up. They just started OT. Didn't see the game so have no idea how cal could have led given how well Wash played vs the bottom feeder Stan,

Cal beat Stanford by more than Washington did.

Don't they let announcers have a day off when their voice is gone?

Harrison Ingram playing with more energy
But I don’t have confidence in 2nd half
Our defense still often seems a step late
Wash st fakes a 3 as our guy lunges for it then they dribble around for open shot or pass into the post
And note Wash st best shooter is outta the game

M Jones has a medium speed release, but that's it. His lateral movement is nonexistent, and with a ball in his hand, even worse. Ingram finally not deferring so much. No idea why he has played like that...the shy star? It does exist.

Not overwork. You only get a voice like that from many years of bourbon consumption.
