RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - 81alum - 04-19-2023

NIL has changed my attitude toward WBB players, and not in a good way.

When the players were college students who played basketball as amateurs, with a tiny handful of them having the opportunity to go pro for a salary less than a grade school teacher's, I felt quite good about cheering for them and also felt it was our responsibility to be restrained in our criticism.  I also felt as if the players deserved privacy about their lives and their decisions, and that there was something vaguely distasteful about older (often much older) fans becoming obsessed about kids who were doing their best to balance school and a sport.

But the moment a player takes money for her name, image, or likeness--and begins to intentionally cultivate celebrity status-- I think she has forfeited the expectation of privacy or restraint on the part of fans.  Players cannot reasonably expect to have it both ways--to be "influencers" and public persons for the sake of profit but to be private college students when it suits them.   They have earned the same level of scrutiny as professional athletes, Hollywood celebrities, and the like--because that is what they have chosen to become.

I say that with a heavy heart, because I have always hated that aspect of professional sports.  Unlike my friend Chimera, I don't think I can transfer my loyalties from the minor-league university system to the big-league WNBA system, since for me the motives of the players matter.  I was never in this just to see the highest quality of basketball that could be played--I was in it because there was something virtuous about playing for education, for sisterhood, for unadulterated joy, and simply for the love of the game.  Pro sports have left me cold for a long time, and now college sports is beginning to as well.

I suppose I might be able to work my down, but with my luck high school girls will soon be getting collectives and NIL contracts.

Muse, a 5*, is not waiting 3 years to start. And we know Dugalic’s story from Oregon. They have too many players with the same year eligibility. If Cori only manages to piss off Christeen and Ansty, I’d give her a ton of credit. That is a worst logjam than we had this year.

Re: UCLA starters - if you were part of the starting 5 that made it to the PAC-12 tourney final game and the Sweet 16, you would give up your starting spot (Brown/Sontag), why?

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - M T - 04-20-2023

81Alum, I think I understand how you feel.  But remember, this is all new to these athletes and to us fans.  They and we need time for this to stabilize (and perhaps be regulated).

I find some pros to seem to be pretty decent, and worthy of my respect.  (I grant that what I believe I know of them may not be how they really are.  We've had a number of seemingly nice celebrities to be found out to be not so nice.)  I find others to be worse than forgettable.

I only know you from your posts and the relatively few times we've talked at Stanford events but I'd think that if you were a 18yo sports star entering the NIL college world, you'd play the game you love and make some money doing so.  You might have your ups and downs, but I'd expect you'd be the kind of person I'd cheer for.   Don't you think some reasonable percentage of college athletes will focus on their sport AND school?

(Ok, now is not the time to recount all the childish & unwise things you did during college just to prove me wrong, even if the statute of limitations has run out ;-)

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - Jskass - 04-20-2023

This is fascinating because Cori has recruited over her incoming class. Will be amazed if she keeps them - and if I were an incoming freshman in particular, I'd have trouble with this move if I'm a big. I'll hope to see a move of a UCLA big to Stanford, which would be ironic.

We know Betts was looking for more of a guarantee of playing time which she presumably got from Close.  Some or all of Dugalic, Iwuala, Sontag, Antsley and Muse should transfer or decommit because that’s basically a guarantee that they won’t be playing.

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - Hieronymus - 04-20-2023

College sports is now very weird with NIL, and WBB is clearly the weirdest. For many WBB players as pointed out college is now much more lucrative than going pro. Doubly so with the Russian off season money spigot turned off. And college has far, far more slots for players vs. the WNBA to boot. It has to make the incentive to cash in and brand during College immense.

I think the big question is can the influencers carry it on past WBB? Some I am sure will, but I have no idea how many of the players are interesting enough to keep things going after leaving school. For exampleClark, if she isn't transcendent in the WNBA, I think will lose earning power post-college. Even say the Cavinder twins are not a slam dunk post-College. The WWE is no guaranteed path, though WBB obviously helped open the door.  They were famous even on a low tier team; so maybe they keep it going regardless. My belief though is they are going to be an exception not a rule.

I guess we shall see because 5-out is the future and the future is now. UCLA looked best with open lanes for Kiki Rice and Charisma and Jones. That is most of Rice’s game really as far as I can tell. Jacquez and Charisma loved inversions. If Sontag was able to hit her shot more consistently, it would been an unbeatable lineup paired with Bessoir. I think Muse might also be a stretch player too. They clearly played with non-shooters on the floor (Christeen, Brown) but no one sane (which is why I questioned Adia Barnes sanity during the AZ-UCLA game in the PAC-12 tourney) would guard Brown to the perimeter.

Well said 81, you’ve expressed my sentiments, exactly when you stated, "I was in it because there was something virtuous about playing for education, for sisterhood, for unadulterated joy, and simply for the love of the game." Beautiful!
I would add that I was attracted to the sport of basketball as I learned it so many decades ago. I appreciated a game played below the rim, where players pitted their skills against others within the parameters of the game, without chest beating and "me, me, me!", where individual play disappeared into team ball, where the players connected with fans and were motivated by fan support, where the emphasis was on fair play and not trash talk, and where players showed humility in the end by shaking the hands of their opponents, and waving at their fans. Respect was the rule of law.
Of course, the current status of the rules will change. I don’t expect that things will get worse, the pendulum should swing back to support a greater balance among the various principals of the game — coaches, colleges, and ruling bodies have been caught in a momentary free-for-all, but they will have their day, too. What emerges from the current chaotic era of ego and commercialism is yet to be seen. Each of us will make our choices based on what the game becomes in the future. I will be watching, too. If the future product embraces my values, I will be back at Maples cheering on the team, if not, well, my wife and I have other competing interests that will get our attention.

Check her TikToc and YouTube channel. Slip into her DMs. I mean, that is what a smart person would have done before they signed another LOI, right? Get a complete picture - the good and the bad - and then make a reasoned decision, not an emotional one. The grass is NOT always greener. I don’t particularly like Tara but she is not clever enough to be some evil mastermind that makes false promises to lure unsuspecting #1 players to Stanford and not play them. Betts was the first in recent memory and it was only because there was a logjam at the post position of Top 10 and Top 20 McDonalds AA post players. And Tara mentioned during the season that she wasn’t handling it well (giving people minutes on the court) and that she was the problem. I mean, nothing changed but do you think any other Top 10 coach would make such an admission?  Usually a top player does not start right away but by mid-season they are either starting or playing a lot. See Chiney Ogwumike, and Chiney was a unanimous #1 player, and then #1 draft pick in WNBA. Didn’t start but played and by the next year, Tara would have played her 50 minutes a game except there are only 40 minutes in a game. Did Haley start? I wasn’t watching that year too closely. Probably only because Dijonai was injured or something like that and it wasn’t at the 4, her best position, and then she got injured. That is how Tara operates - never evolving. Hannah went from barely playing 3 years behind the Hulls to playing 40 minutes/game. Tara is very predictable.

Cori is way more clever than Tara (which admittedly, doesn’t take much) and is more of a mastermind. She will have you convinced come November that the reason you probably won’t be starting there either (or playing more than 15 min/game) is (1) your fault, and (2) Tara’s fault for not playing you more your freshman year and how her current players are much more experienced than you so should start before you. And you will believe her. Because let’s face it, from what I can tell, you will be no match for Cori.

Edited to add: If I were you, I would have chosen Notre Dame for a variety of reasons but especially the “depth” chart. We will see how it all turns out in due time. I am emotional too and would have wanted to go head to head with Stanford for the next 3 years just to show them they should have started me. But I try not to make emotional decisions and after a good night’s sleep I would have quickly concluded ND was the better option for starter minutes plus they play A LOT more zone defense in one year than UCLA will play in the next 3 years. I think that defensive scheme would be more beneficial and ensure lots of playing time plus ND just has such a fluid, lovely offensive scheme, and better track record getting “starters” to the WNBA.

This suggestion sent me down quite the rabbit hole last night. I was most fascinated by the official visit Dominique had with USC. Fancy hotel overlooking Crypto.Com arena. All of her favorite candies.  And...and...and...attendance at a game against the team with whom she'd been playing just days before.

That would be my question.  UCLA coaches are going to put the best team on the court regardless of prior discussions with players. They owe it to their fans, to the WBB program, and to the athletic department; not to mention their own reputations.    If Betts is holding back their team, I don't see any way Close will risk losing games to keep someone happy on the court.

At the same time I think by next year Betts may be the most effective post player for UCLA.  If that turns out to be true than I suppose Betts might feel justified  in her mind with a "I told you so" attitude toward Tara.

But don't you guys think that players can still be in it for a lot of the right reasons AND make money (that they deserve IMO)? I think Cam and Haley are great examples of playing for sisterhood, for unadulterated joy, and have a real love of the game. Watching Betts play, I think she's also in that category. It's not like all these players are completely selling their souls. I don't think they are all obsessed with making money to the point that's the sole reason they play. They are just getting paid. People can make money and it doesn't have to be a turnoff. This topic reminds me of a couple friends who where the biggest U2 fans ever back in the early 80's, but when their records started going platinum, their concerts got too large, they made music videos for MTV, and Bono went on the talk shows, they accused them of selling out and refused to listen to their music. Apparently, they weren't "artists" anymore. Here we are 40 years later, they've made countless incredible albums, have done a ton of social/political work that's important to them and has benefited many, but because they got rich along the way my friends have sworn them off (and missed out on enjoying their music as a result).

I also have a different opinion on the education piece. College sports has been riddled for years with players who don't really give a darn about their education. Skipping class, fake grades, majoring in basket weaving just to stay eligible, etc. That stuff hasn't changed and it's no different now than 40 years ago. Stanford is and will always be a different animal in this area, but even in the 80's there were a lot of Stanford athletes who didn't give a crap about their education. I agree it needs to be watched in some way (which is why I'm advocating Stanford get in the game!), but I don't think NIL necessarily will swing the academic pendulum so far in the wrong direction at Stanford. Take Cam, Haley, Fran, Ashten, Hannah etc...some are better students than others but I'd say they all care. I might go so far as to say Cam and Haley will be exiting Stanford as more well prepared business women than the typical business undergrad.

Agreed, earning money and valuing education are far from being mutually exclusive. The caliber of athletes that Stanford recruits have plenty of other options if they want to maximize NIL earnings; the ability to compete at a high level while receiving a premier education is our draw. A strong collective will allow us to compete in this new era but recruits who go through the application process and enroll surely still value the education component a great deal.

It's true that there are some athletes who don't "give a crap" about their education but that's true for non-athletes too, i.e. students who understand the immense value of the degree but just do the minimum to obtain said degree.

Yes, I think they can be in it for good reasons and to also make money.  I am not denying that.  But professionals can say that as well, and so the relationship has fundamentally changed.  The players who put themselves in the social media spotlight to make money (that often has nothing to do with basketball) are no different than any other starlets.  Furthermore, I used to be linked to our players by virtue of our common experience as Stanford students and our personal devotion to the institution that had so fundamentally shaped us both.  No longer.  They are at Stanford to be paid.  I wasn't.  And they are willing to go somewhere else to make more money.  I could not have been paid to leave the place.  Their values are simply alien to me, and so I can't relate to them.

With regard to the education piece, you are of course correct that college sports have been corrupt in many ways for many years.  That is why I became a Stanford fan in the first place--because Stanford was unique in resisting that corruption.  Half the fun in cheering for Stanford has been that we routinely are the good guys and are playing against ethically challenged and corrupt schools.  If we stoop to their level and use their techniques, such as paying players, then the fun goes out of it for me.

I am not arguing that all of you should feel the same way as I do.  I am explaining my own depression at the situation.  I just can't get excited about cheering on a minor league sports franchise which borrows the Stanford name and plays in Stanford facilities but which doesn't really share those older Stanford values that made me into a sports fan in the first place.

I disagree. They are at Stanford for multiple reasons, only one of which is to get paid. And if getting paid was the primary reason (or even just the tipping point for their choice of college) they would surely be somewhere else.

Money is as good of an incentive as any in a capitalist society. I am 100% in favor of Nil and the transfer portal. Evolve or get out of the way.

Haha not on topic but her pre-transfer “shade” on Cori was entertaining. I was laughing at the bit about Cori spitting when she speaks and sweating profusely. I noticed the latter for years and wondered why Cori didn’t get Botox injections and solve the problem since she was in Los Angeles, the beauty capital of the world

I disagree. They are at Stanford for multiple reasons, only one of which is to get paid. And if getting paid was the primary reason (or even just the tipping point for their choice of college) they would surely be somewhere else.
Fair enough.  I made an extreme statement, and it was unjust.  On the other hand, I was a work-study student at Stanford earning minimum wage, and when I put myself back in my Stanford undergraduate shoes, something about the NIL payments is alien to me.

Money is as good of an incentive as any in a capitalist society. I am 100% in favor of Nil and the transfer portal. Evolve or get out of the way.
Your motivation for going to Stanford (and better) was entirely different from my own (and better), and I choose not to take your advice regarding evolution.  But hopefully we can find a meeting ground where we both can appreciate our student athletes.

I find I must ask, why do you find it necessary to use so much invective in your posts?  Can't we just chose to disagree in an amicable manner?  Although I often disagree with your posts, I admit I sometimes learn from them.  So why the phrases like "get out of the way?"
