From the toughest night in Allister era on Friday to what I will argue is the greatest game in program history on Sunday night! Just absolutely stunning. This team never gave up, and fought all the way back, and so thoroughly deserve this trip to the World Series. I can't believe what I just saw.

What a great win by Stanford. Amazing considering what happened on Friday.
Canady was her normal amazing self. Our batters were fantastic.

Closest 8-0 game ever?
Happy for Stanford. I *think* the umps missed the ball hitting the calf of a Stanford player, but the challenge rules are what they are. Can't really blame LSU for challenging the previous plays at the plate, either. Just a bad situation. But all credit to the Stanford bats for putting the game out of reach after that questionable call.

"12.17.2.6 It is not interference, and the runner is not out:
12.17.2.6.2 When the runner is hit with a fair, untouched batted ball that has passed a fielder (other than the pitcher) and, in the umpire’s judgment, no other fielder had a reasonable chance to make a play."
So at this point, it is arguing semantics at best for LSU whether the right fielder had a reasonable chance to make a play. Also, the LSU coach burned both her challenges (which is relatively new to softball), including one that was a desperation challenge. Given our controversial loss to UCLA, I do feel a bit bad for LSU; but unlike the UCLA game, Stanford left no doubt who the better team was tonight.

Definitely agree with your last sentence. It was a great win and well deserved.

Stanford's rewards for this fantastic victory are a trip to Oklahoma City and a 1st round game against #1 seed Texas on Thursday at 5 pm pacific. Stanford played Texas twice during the regular season, losing 9-2 in Florida and winning 4-3 in 8 innings in Austin.
Hope that Canady's arm is made of rubber and back is as strong as that of Atlas. Stanford will go as far as her pitching will take them.

Thanks for sharing, d4cohn. It makes me feel a lot better about the call and the win knowing that the TV announcers were wrong and didn’t know the rules. It didn’t matter that the ball hit her calf - it was a fair ball that went past the 1st baseman and there was no play for the 2nd baseman or Right Fielder so base hit! And the inning continued. Stanford wins!

Stanford wins!In fairness to the announcers, they corrected themselves the next half-inning (top of the 6th) and pointed out the correct rule.

For baseball, it's more complicated for OBR or NCAA, but I think the rule for high school is similar.
For NCAA:
Rule 8.5.k
A runner is out when:
k. The runner, including a runner in contact with a base, is hit while in fair territory by a fair batted ball before it has touched a fielder including the pitcher or passed all infielders who have a chance to make a play on the ball, other than the pitcher.

Very complicated wording, but technically it means that if no infielder has a chance to make a play then it is not interference.
HOWEVER, in practice I have never seen a batter struck by a ball not called interference regardless of the chance to make a play on the ball. And most people seem to think that the rule is struck by ball out no matter what.

NiJaree was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, which is effectively softball's version of the Voldemort trophy (down to the similarities between the trophies themselves). This is the second time a Stanford player has won this award, following Ashley Hansen winning in 2011.
So thoroughly deserved.

That's great news. I wonder if she would have won it if we had lost the second game against LSU. Her pitching in all 3 games and shutting out LSU in the last two was really amazing.

Certainly, her performances in games 2&3 confirmed that she should get the award, even for those that may have questioned her after game 1. She showed that game 1 was the anomalous outing, not the regular season + game 2.
To me, the fact that she did so well on day 2 and on day 3 was impressive. I would have thought game 1 showed they had solved her pitching and it was only going to get harder for her. But she added the inside pitch and maybe more change ups. Not too few strikeouts compared to others but less than she is used to.
An impressive year and a well-deserved award

This appraisal of the 8 teams by ESPN seems pretty accurate as far as Stanford is concerned. We are probably the most offensively challenged team of the 8, but maybe with the best pitcher. There is such a discrepancy between our team's hitting and most of the rest of the teams we may have to play, we will probably go as far as Canady can carry us, although the last game against LSU made it seem we might have rediscovered our offense. Going to be fun to watch.
