RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - Giants - 06-23-2023

A bit of esoteric trivia from Jayson Stark at The Athletic….

The two greatest rivalries in baseball are Yankees/Red Sox and Giants/Dodgers…

Both featured sweeps of three games on the same dates recently.

Has that ever happened before?

Yes, once in 1954, when the Dodgers and Yankees were the winners (as opposed to this year when the Giants and Red Sox were the winners).

I notice that Spencer Lytle, Stanford's newest football transfer from Wisconsin with two years of eligibility remaining, and was All Academic Big Ten at Wisconsin...and a former recruiting target of Stanford.

Trivia question: Each year, the College Sports Communicators (f/k/a College Sports Information Directors of America -- CoSIDA -- prior to 2022) give out a single Academic All American Award to the best Academically qualified All American football player. From 1991 through 2010, two awards were given, one to the University division, one to the College division. From 2011, four awards were given, one each to the D1, D2, D3 and NAIA divisions.

Our question focuses on D1/University divisions. Since 1991, 32 players have received the award. Here's the mult-part question:

1) Stanford has had three winners. Who were they?
2) Which university is the only school to have four winners?
3) Which is the only Ivy League school to be represented?
4) Only one other Pac-12 school has football players who won the award. Which school? Hint: same player won it twice, two years consecutively.

Never heard of the award, so totally guessing.....
1) Bryce Love, Andrew Luck, Christian McCaffrey
2) Michigan
3) Princeton
4) UCLA

1) Bryce Love, Andrew Luck, Christian McCaffrey   Great guesses. Tommy Vardell won the first in 1991, Andrew Luck won in 2011 and Christian McCaffrey won in 2016.
2) Michigan   Florida, of all schools. Alabama, like Stanford, has also had three.
3) Princeton  Nick Hartigan from Brown won it in 2005. Rhodes scholar, Harvard law, now Asst US Atty in Atlanta.
Oregon is the only other Pac 12 school. Justin Herbert won it two years in a row. Utah and Colorado have also had winners, but they predated their respective schools' participation in the Pac 12.
4) UCLA

Which three quarterbacks had the top three passer ratings among the 57 Super Bowls played to date?

Who are the top two quarterbacks in terms of career passer rating in Super Bowls (minimum 40 attempts)?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - PAsportsfan - 06-27-2023

Doug Williams
Phil Simms
Nick foles

You are correct with Simms, who had the best single game ever at #1. Super Bowl XXI, he had a 150.9 passer rating.
Doug Williams is #8, with a 127.9 passer rating in Super Bowl XXII.
Nick Foles wasn't in the Top 10.

Think Bay Area connections...

Interestingly, Terry Bradshaw had four of the top 10 ratings when his career ended, but rules changes (and better quarterbacks) pushed him further down the list. So he doesn't appear in the Top 10 for the single Super Bowls, though Mr. Bradshaw is #4 in career passer rating.

Joe Montana is #2 with a 147.6 rating in Super Bowl XXIV. And #3 is Mr. James William Plunkett, Jr. with a 145 rating in Super Bowl XV. Steve Young was #6 with 134.8.

For career passer rating,#1 is Joe Montana with a 127.8 rating among his four Super Bowls. And Mr. Plunkett is #2 with a 122.8 rating among his two Super Bowls.

Steve Young didn't meet the 40 attempt threshold for career Super Bowl rating, and GOAT Tom Brady is just #8 in career passer rating at 97.7.

I was surprised that Steve Young didn't have 40 completions between his two Super Bowl appearances.  I'd forgotten he only threw three times in mop-up work for Joe Montana in 1990. In 1995 he threw 36 times completing 26.

So ... he just missed the 40 attempt cut-off with 39 career Super Bowl tosses! If you allowed him to be included with only 39 attempts his career SB rating would be 134.1. (Helped immensely by San Diego's ineptitude in Super Bowl XXIX (otherwise known as SB 29)).

In honor of the NHL Draft tonight:
What future MLB Hall-of-Famer was selected in the 1984 NHL draft ahead of future NHL Hall-of-Famers Brett Hull & Luc Robitaille?  For a bonus who was the #1 pick in that draft?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - vataha - 06-28-2023

Tom Glavine L.A. Kings

We have a winner!
Glavine was drafted out of Billerica (Mass.) HS where he had 47 goals & 47 assists in 23 games and was the Merrimack Valley's MVP.  He was also drafted by the Braves that year and made his MLB debut 3 years later.

Two players have had Tommy John surgery and been inducted into HOF. One a pitcher one an infielder. Who are they?

Tommy John. If not in, he deserves to be just for the surgery. . . .

Well in the H of F. Was a starter became a reliever. John Smoltz

RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - terry - 06-29-2023

Tommy John is not in the HOF, but there's a good case for including him. If Jim Kaat is in the Hall, why not Tommy John?

.................Tommy John...Jim Kaat
W/L..............288-231......283-237
ERA................3.34...........3.45
WAR...............61.6..........50.5
WHIP..............1.28..........1.26

Of course, it may not a good idea to pick one of the weakest HOF members and set that as the bar. That arguably could open the doors too much....

RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - BobK - 06-29-2023

Kaat won 16 Gold Gloves. There’s that
