Baird having a real  tough time on serve receive tonight

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - martyup - 10-01-2021

Frustrating second set.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - mbdude - 10-01-2021

Back row passing poor. Defense slow

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - martyup - 10-01-2021

Damn those ASU dink shots that are dropping.  Also, ASU is digging everything.

We tied it up at 16. LET'S GO!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 10-01-2021

Yep the top two wbb recruits are here. Looks like 4 altogether

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Canalejas - 10-01-2021

Phew.  Stanford does just enough to hold on in the 3rd set.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-01-2021

Phew is right.  Crazy that we are outhitting ASU .370 to .220 and we were a couple points away from being down 2-1.

Another Libero bites the dust.

We win in 4.  Would have been a lot easier without 17 service errors.

Yes, an exceedingly tough time.  Stanford doesn't have any six rotation OHs.  Neither Baird nor Francis can be counted on to pass consistently from match to match.  A six rotation OH has to do more than hit.

Stanford has a very good setter, big hitters, and occasionally decent blocking.  That's about it and that's not nearly enough to go far in the NCAA tournament.

That’s the challenge when your OH/Op’s are all 6’3” or taller.  Much tougher to play defense.

October 4 AVCA poll:  Stanford stays at #17.

https://www.avca.org/polls/di-women/10-04-2021.html

Here is a way more important ranking: The first NCAA RPI ranking of the season. In the past this carried big weight in the NCAA tournament selection. Stanford is at #16.

https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi

Utah is the highest ranked PAC-12 school at #13, Colorado at #14, and Stanford at #16. The top 16 seeds get a minimum of the first two playoff matches on their home court if they construct the tournament the way it had been done prior to Covid.

Kami Miner is Pac-12 FotW again:

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-04-2021

Amazing that we have yet to record an offensive PoW.   Oglive was defensive PoW in the first week, and Miner has been FoW three times.

It's Miner's fault for spreading the sets around too evenly. :-)

Quotes from Article:

We've got some big-time matchups in the Pac-12 this weekend and I am super excited for Stanford vs. Oregon. The Stanford Cardinal are so interesting this year as they make their way back after a struggle-filled 2020 campaign.

The Cardinal lead the all-time series 63-4, so a win for Oregon would be just its fifth time ever taking down Stanford. The Cardinal have won the past 13 straight meetings.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-08-2021

Stanford plays Oregon State tonight at 7:00 pm in Corvallis.  Oregon is 0-4 in conference and 2-12 overall.  Even so they are capable of beating Stanford on their home court if Stanford looks ahead to the Sunday match.

Oregon State's NCAA RPI ranking is #203 which is really pathetic for a PAC-12 school. Playing Oregon State, win or lose, drags down Stanford's RPI ranking.

There are five PAC-12 WVB matches being televised tonight on at least one of the PAC-12 regional channels.  Last Friday all six PAC-12 matches were televised.  As bad a deal as PAC-12 network is from a revenue standpoint, they are the best at WVB coverage.  Now if they could just fix their never-ending audio problems.

WSU beat ASU last night.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - martyup - 10-08-2021

The Cardinal blanked ORST tonight 3-0.

After 8 OOC and 6 PAC-12 Matches - joemontes - 10-11-2021

After yesterday's 5-set loss @ #14 Oregon, Stanford's record stands at 9-5 overall and 4-2 in PAC 12 conference play.

Those 2 PAC 12 losses to Top 25 teams in UCLA/Oregon could have easily been wins had it not been for unfortunately untimely injuries to major players, firstly to libero OGLIVIE during the UCLA match with Stanford leading 2-0 and up in the 3rd set, and then to OH2/OPP FRANCIS during the Oregon match with Stanford leading 2-1 and 8-6 in the 4th set (although she did return in the 4th set with Stanford trailing 13-16).

So, OK, I will attribute those 2 PAC 12 losses partly to tough luck.

Moving forward, I think it is crucial for Stanford to win at least 3 of their next 4 matches vs. Top 25+ PAC 12 teams in Utah/Colorado/WSU/Washington, in order for them to continue to have a chance to get an NCAA Tournament seeding that will enable them to host the first two rounds.

For that to happen, their offense needs to be more unpredictable and less OH/OPP heavy, probably by involving the middles more. The problem right now is VICINI is mightily struggling in her hitting during PAC 12 play, averaging only 0.83 kill/set with a .206 hitting % after 6 PAC 12 matches, and in the last 4 matches (vs. ASU/Arizona/OSU/Oregon), she averaged only 0.6 kill/set with an abyssmal .052 hitting % (hitting 0% or negative in 3 of those 4 matches).  On the other hand, VICINI's blocking has increased to a PAC 12 leading 1.73 blocks/set during PAC 12 play, so Stanford needs her defensive presence at the net.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-11-2021

Nice analysis.  I agree with almost everything although I would put more emphasis on Stanford's lackluster passing and digging.  Needless to say the erratic first touch of the ball gives Miner limited options and setting to Vicini without a double block in front of her difficult.

It seemed to me Oregon's floor defense was substantially superior to Stanford. The one exception is Olgivie who IMO continues to improve.

At this point Stanford has no "good wins" in conference.  Losing to Oregon on the road is understandable.  Losing to UCLA at home hurts.  At this point getting a top 16 seed in the tournament seems unlikely although Stanford often is favored by the selection committee based on past reputation.
