Better start today -- 4 runs in the first, Scooter G with a 2-run dinger, made the Colo starter throw 30+ pitches, turn the ball over to Bum.

He picks and chooses his spots. He bunts against the shift when the 3B or SS is on the "pull" side of 2B, and there's only one fielder on the weak side, halfway between the bags. Belt push bunts along the 3B line, particularly against right hand pitchers whose follow-through ensures that their momentum is away from the ball.

Great game tonight. Stanford's Slater gets on base three times, two hits and a walk, batting from the #8 hole and scored from first on a double on some nifty running. Now hitting .274. Sandoval had three hits, Vogt and Belt had two apiece, Belt's both doubles. Pillar, 1 for 1 with a double. Gennett went 1 for 5, but it was a home run. Giants had 14 hits on the day, Bumgarner gave up five earned runs in five innings. Watson picked off their fastest guy (Desmond). Coonrod, Watson, Gott and Smith held the Rockies scoreless for the win.

I was looking the change in OPS over the careers of the starters.
Historically, Posey tails off slightly in August and September, about a 50 point OPS drop from the prior two months. Crawford’s OPS increases 20 points from July to August, then increases 30 points from August to September and Pablo has a similar OPS jump over those months.
Panik does a massive, 250 point OPS jump from July to August, and Belt’s OPS jumps 150+ points from July to August, on average. Pillar is flat from July to August, then takes an 80 point jump in September.
The only starter whose OPS dips (20 points) from July to August is Longoria, who then jumps 50 points from August to September, historically. And Vogt typically drops in OPS by about 30 points each month.

If the Giants get a wild card berth this year, it will be "torture". They simply aren't yet a good team. Their hitting has unquestionably improved in the last month+. They have improved their overall talent as an offense by getting a 2B who can at least in theory hit a bit. However, their rotation is quite weak in the 3-5 spots, and the Shark is a bit erratic at 2. Their bullpen, while still strong, may not be able to make up for that. Yet, they hang in there. It may be the ability to just keep going that enables them to rise above teams like Philadelphia and Washington, who are probably a bit better in talent but who hopefully will choke a bit in the "dog days" of August. It is for sure going to take a bit of luck to get there. The Giants don't get many weak teams to beat up on during the next two months. They will have to earn it.

The Giants are currently #27 in MLB in hitting, but they were #9 during July, and #8 so far in August, #6 in NL.
Giants were tied for third in pitching in the NL in July. They are dead last in August. We'll see who shows up the rest of the year. Cueto can't arrive soon enough.
In fielding, Giants are exactly at league average for the year, .984.
Giants were wild card winners of the W/S in 2014, when they went 88-74. Currently 56-55, the Giants would have to go 32-19 in the remaining 51 games to hit that threshold again. That's a 63% winning clip. Only the Dodgers are winning at that rate in the NL.
Giants still only 2.5 back of the wild card.

There is no clutch to this team. Today two teams in front of them have already lost, and two more are currently losing. A golden chance to pick up an important game in the loss column. But nah, let's lay an egg.
And yeah, lex is right, the rotation stinks.

"MY" Mets are 9-1 in their last 10. Giants are 4-6 in their last 10. Mets now have the best record since break and are .5 GB of Giants. Fangraphs has the Giants at just a 5% chance to make playoffs. Mets are now a 20% proposition.
The Giants remaining schedule has a .531 win percentage. The next most difficult schedule among wild card contenders is the .512 the Cardinals face. The Nationals, Phillies, and D-Backs all have under .500 opponent records remaining.
The Giants should have traded Bumgarner and Smith. I get why they didn't, but that doesn't mean it was a smart choice.
