RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - CompSci87 - 11-27-2021

I hope so. Otherwise saying just that they promised to fill out the application wouldn't be too exciting.

"I am excited to announce that I have verbally committed to the application process at Stanford University..."

Maybe the coaching staff asked them to use that wording to make sure no one assumes they have already been admitted.

That’s what they’ve been instructed to share.

The FIVB U19 Beach Championships start next week (Dec 6-11) in Thailand.

The Stanford team of Hodel & Reilly that won the US qualifier is in the main draw, seeded 21st:

A Stanford recruit, Ruby Sorra, representing Canada, is in the qualification bracket:

Four teams will advance from the quali to the main draw.

Thanks for posting.  I had forgotten about this.  It's difficult to seed Hodel/Reilly because they have played very little against international competition.

Plummer won the world championship U17 in 2014 and got the Bronze medal for U19 in 2016 with Cal's Mirkovic as her partner.

I agree.  Whatever happens, it should be great experience for them.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-06-2021

Ruby Sorra and partner Emma Glagau beat teams from Brazil and Thailand to advance to the main draw.  They have been placed in Pool E, same as Hodel & Reilly.  Hopefully both teams will advance.

They meet in a match later today (Dec. 7th in Thailand):
https://en.volleyballworld.com/beachvolleyball/competitions/u19-world-championships-2021/schedule/
If I understand correctly, GMT-8 is PST, so this will be 17:50 (5:50pm) here on the west coast (8:50am in Thailand).

I find BVBDatabase site much easier to read and navigate than the official FIVB site (though sometimes not as up-to-the-minute):
http://www.bvbinfo.com/Tournament.asp?ID=3805&Process=Matches

Matches are being posted (and streamed?) on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDnK6_u8JKLq-Xx_N0GuuUg?

I haven't watched any yet.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 12-06-2021

Thanks for posting.  The BVB webpage gives additional information and is easier to follow.   It doesn't look like the matches will be live streamed on youtube; just uploaded after completion.  I'm going to check at 6:00 pm to see if I can find any live stream.

I haven't seen an overall tournament bracket. There are only four teams in the pool. Is it one or two teams that advance from each pool?

BVB shows Hodel, Reilly, and Sorra with $0 career earnings thus far. It looks like winnings aren't going to be a consideration for their continued eligibility.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-06-2021

I believe 3 teams (out of 4) from each pool advance to the single-elimination bracket.
The top team in each pool gets a first round bye.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-06-2021

Looks like they are live-streaming center court, but not the match we're interested in (which will be on court 4).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 12-06-2021

I can see Ukraine versus Chile.  For U19 these players look really good.  Well maybe tomorrow USA will play on this court.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-06-2021

Hodel & Reilly win easily 21-14, 21-14.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-07-2021

Hodel & Reilly play again tonight at 6:40pm and 11:00pm PST.
They will be on Court 2.  Someone on VT said that court is streamed on Facebook, but I haven't found a link.

Glagau & Sorra also play at 6:40pm and 11pm, on Court 4.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-07-2021

Ruby Sorra is live-streaming her match on instagram.

Looks like Hodel & Reilly have not started yet.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-07-2021

The FIVB page kept showing the Hodel/Reilly match as "upcoming", until suddenly it was over.  They beat Chile easily, 21-7, 21-7.
Pretty sure they are guaranteed to move on to the elimination bracket, regardless of the outcome of their third match.

Glagau & Sorra split first two sets and have been behind in the third, vs. Ukraine.
ETA: now 15 all.
And now 20 all.

Glagau & Sorra finally win it (21-18, 11-21, 24-22). Their final pool match is against the Chilean team, who appear to be very weak (haven't scored more than 8 points in a set). As long as Canada (Glagau & Sorra) win a set, they should advance, too.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-08-2021

Three teams finish Pool E tied at 2-1.
Hodel/Reilly beat Glagau/Sorra, G/S beat Ukraine, Ukraine beat H/R (3 sets).

Ukraine wins the pool and advances to the round of 16.  H/R and G/S move into the first elimination round.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 12-08-2021

Thanks for the updates John.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 12-08-2021

I second Bobk's comment.  From the bracket shown on the BVB website it looks like Hodel/Reilly play an Australian team today and if they win then later today play the team from Italy.  I think both matches are winnable.  Neither match is on the stadium court so I'm not going to spend time trying to find a live stream.

According to the FIVB site, H&R will play at 9:10pm (PST) tonight on Center Court, so it may be streamed.  (BVBinfo has them on court 4, but in this case I would trust FIVB.)  And yes, if they win, they play the Italian team at 1:00am PST.

ETA:  I see Stanford BVB published the link to the TVA youtube channel:

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-08-2021

Started watching late, they're in the first set.  Scores are backwards on the video.

ETA: Hodel & Reilly take the first set 21-19.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpk6INbH8zI

ETA:  Set 2, H&R have a quick 7-1 lead.

ETA:  They won, 21-19, 21-12.  They were up 19-9, the Aussies scored three in a row, so the Americans took a time out.  After that, they finished off the Aussies.

The bracket on BVBinfo is incorrect; looks like H&R will play the other Canadian team, Mann & Santer, at 1am.

Glagau & Sorra also won their match against a German team, 21-19, 21-13.  They next play the the Thai team that was seeded #1, also at 1am (on Center Court). I'm not going to stay up for it though.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 12-09-2021

Hodel/Reilly and Glagau/Sorra both won their matches, and will meet in a quarterfinal match on Center Court tonight at 7:30pm PST.
