Yeah, that was one painful inning.
And my broadcast cut off at 4-4, two outs, and an 0-2 count (sling TV). Not clear why, all the other games were still on.
Looks like on top of the questionable non-foul, there were three infield hits, two of which went off the pitcher's glove.
Ouch.
Then the ninth was the first 1-2-3 inning for the Stanford batters. 8 LOB didn't help either.
I would guess Dowd might start tomorrow.
He started 5 games this year, and so far has only appeared for 1 inning (14 pitches vs. ND State) in the regional.
I'd guess basically anybody on staff might come in for a short spot, but this team has always had a pitching depth problem and that's prominent now.

Re: SLING
Having them cut off a broadcast is my major complaint with them. I have had them cut off several Stanford games of one kind or another which ran long. You basically cannot count on any broadcast going beyond the scheduled time frame.

Don't wait for that explanation. NCAA never makes mistakes. It surely does not explain or apologize.
It was close. Close enough to make overruling via replay improper. Call on the field has to stand.
Sports officials tend to favor teams that are behind. In the women's national championship game, we had lots of possessions inside the paint, but we only shot two free throws. Happily, the second one provided the winning point.
That doesn't make it right. But you see it a lot.

Turning the page to this evening's win-or-go-home game... This Stanford team has proven its resiliency all season. My only fear is that we are low on pitchers. So far in this regional:
Brendan Beck: 116 pitches on Saturday.
Alex Williams: 104 pitches on Friday.
Quinn Mathews: 59 pitches on Sunday.
Zach Grech: 56 pitches on Sunday.
I have to think these four pitchers are emergency use only.
Brandt Pancer: 16 pitches on Friday, 25 on Saturday.
Jacob Palisch: 10 pitches on Saturday, 25 pitches on Sunday.
Joey Dixon: 26 pitches on Sunday.
I think Pancer and Dixon should be available, but not sure about pitching Palisch three days in a row.
Austin Weiermiller: 17 pitches on Sunday.
Tommy O'Rourke: 16 pitches on Sunday.
Drew Dowd: 13 pitches on Friday.
Jonathan Worley: 2 pitches on Saturday.
These four should all be available tonight.
As CTCard noted, Drew Dowd would be the logical starter. We'll have other arms available, but not our best arms, of course.
The good news is that UCI is playing its fifth game in four days, so I'm guessing that their pitching staff is also overtaxed. I predict that the winner of this game will score 10+ runs. I also like the fact that Stanford is the home team in this game.
This has been an amazing turnaround season for Stanford, and I'll be watching ESPNU at 7 pm with hopes that it will continue.

Do we know who the home team is?
I think a coin flip determines it. But the flip should have happened after last night's game.

The home team is determined by a coin flip? Seems to me that the home team should be the higher seeded team. There should be a reward for earning a higher seed.

Not certain about the coin flip determining who is the home team. Pretty sure that's how it works in game three of Super Regionals and national championship series. Or, at least, that is how it worked long ago at Rosenblatt.

I believe for the regional round the coinflip is only used as a tiebreaker if other criteria do not leave a situation where one team has been the visitor more times than the other. Irvine has been the visitor twice, Stanford once, Irvine is the home team tonight. I am not 100% sure on this but the way ESPN has scores listed for tonight would suggest that Irvine is the home team. I will note that of the 8 regionals playing a second regional final, the designated home team switched in every regional except Stanford's.

Everything is an emergency now.
I suspect we'll see at least a few pitches from this group, mostly Williams.
For comparison, in 2019 we won our regional out of the losers bracket - 5 games.
In the Monday game, Beck pitched 3.1 perfect innings (36 pitches) after pitching 101 pitches in the Friday game. Of course, this time he pitched on Saturday - the downside of that decision.
Grech (in 2019) appeared in games 2 (22 pitches), 4 (10 pitches), 5 (17 pitches).
Little appeared in games 4 (45 pitches) and 5 (15 pitches).
For UCI, the apparently most prominent guy who hasn't pitched yet in the regional is Josh Ibarra, 19 appearances, 4.62 ERA, 1.26 WHIP.
Their regular #2 Pinto only went 48 pitches against us, so he could be back.
And they have a guy named Stanford in their bullpen ... maybe a secret weapon?

Thanks for the clarification, MiniBlueHawkCard. I was going off of how the game was listed on gostanford.com, but that is obviously not the authoritative site. So it will have to suffice that Stanford is the *host* team tonight.
