If getting an MFA works with her “40-year” career plans, say because it would help with her aspirations to be a sports journalist, then great, and if she can help the basketball team, even better.  But finding a graduate program for her just so she can play another year or two of basketball at Stanford kind of does a disservice to the “student” part of “student athlete”.

Eta: doesn't the Communications department have a one-year master's degree? Or is that just the Co-Term?

MLA is specific to the Continuing Studies program.

Also, I checked and the admissions process for all Stanford's grad programs, including the MLA, for AY2022-23 has indeed ended.  Application process for the 2023-24 academic year will start in this coming September.

RE: Class of 2023+ - 2006alum - 06-03-2022

The ladies doth protest too much if you think the transfer portal is about chasing degrees and not roster spots. There's an argument Stanford shouldn't play that game, sure. But that's the game, and the cart is fully pulling the horse at just about every P5 institution left. I don't think Thompson, Sniezek, Dodson, and Brown all coincidentally thought Notre Dame had the one best grad degree for them...

isn't it her initiative, rather than our poaching, to transfer & play as a grad student rather than simply graduate?

and why mfa? and which program? the creative writing mfa is extremely competitive. maybe you mean ma or ms.

Big congratulations to Agara.  I think she is under-ranked at #40 by HoopGurlz.  They also list her as a 5'11" guard when she has grown into a 6'2" power forward.  In his article on the trials, Mike Flynn called Agara a power player similar to Breya Cunningham with Agara having the ability to play outside as well.  And getting a commitment from any of three of Watkins, Hidalgo or Cheli would be of immense proportions.

She's ranked #14 by Prospects Nation, now listed as 6' 0" guard. BTW, PN has Ogden as rank #7

She has up to two years of playing eligibility left thus could pursue a 2-year master's degree. She redshirted the 19-20 (the season that never had an NCAA tourney because of COVID) then resumed the following year. Since one of her 3 years playing for BYU was during that 20-21 season, she could play for two more full seasons for a total of 5 collegiate hoops seasons.

Unless she applied before the AY2022-23 application deadlines, and was either accepted or waitlisted, she won't be able to matriculate next year. Let's hope that she applied in time.  However, if she's just entering the portal now, and there's no word on her having applied in time AND been accepted/waitlisted, well.....

RE: Class of 2023+ - Card10Fan - 06-03-2022

She does follow Stanford and most of our team on her IG. At quick glance, I don’t see she follows any other programs aside from BYU. Granted that could be some still from her initial recruitment. Hope we are interested and can land her!

RE: Class of 2023+ - ca245 - 06-03-2022

Couldn’t this be a plausible scenario: she applied in time to the grad school(s) of her choice, but didn’t announce she was entering the portal until she knew she had been accepted in at least one of them. Now she knows; hence the announcement of her entry into the portal. But until completion of formalities making the grad transfer official, no public announcement of where she is going.

The one other reason this seems plausible is that Tara never leaves a scholarship unfilled, so if she added Papadaki but no one else, presumably she has a plan for one more commitment to come.

Both Courtney Ogden and Indya Nivar make the USA U18. Very impressive. Beat out some big names like Ashlon Jackson, Ashlynn Shade, and KK Bransford.

I’m extremely impressed that both Nivar and Ogden made the team.  Really bodes well for our future that 4 of the 5 US recruits in our 2022 and 2023 classes represented the US on a national team.  And Watkins and Hidalgo are certainly welcome to join and make it 6 of 7.

And US national team selection has been a pretty good predictor of success for Stanford recruits.  Jones, Brink and Belibi have starred at Stanford.  It took Wilson a while but she became a starter and star defender and Dodson played really well her senior year at Notre Dame.  Brown also made a national team but was hampered by injuries and has her shot at success at Notre Dame as well.

RE: Class of 2023+ - 2006alum - 06-04-2022

Great to hear this. That four of our five American recruits are making the U1X national teams is a really good sign for transitioning from the Jones/Brink/Belibi era who were our prior trio of prominent Team USA players.

6 of 12 of 2022 USA U18 are PAC 12 bound:

GILBERT ==> Arizona (2022)
JONES ==> UCLA (2022)
NIVAR ==> Stanford (2022)
OGDEN ==> Stanford (2023)
RICE ==> UCLA (2022)
VANSLOOTEN ==> Oregon (2022)

RE: Class of 2023+ - BosCard - 06-04-2022

The last U17/U18 teams were in 2018 (no tournaments in 2020 because of the pandemic).  All those players have had 1-4 years of college basketball (Azzi Fudd is the only 1 year player) so we can see how they've performed in college.  This is my unofficial evaluation of whether the players have lived up to their national team billing in college.  FYI, I am using the players initially selected as 3 U18 players in 2018 had to be replaced.

Yes (top player or important player on a top team or top player on a pretty good team)
No (but a number of these players dealt with injuries and interestingly they all played at Notre Dame or are transferring to Notre Dame)

Come to think of it, Stanford's 2022-2023 current recruits from the USA
make up a pretty good starting 5, filling up all 5 positions:

SF - Courtney OGDEN  6'1     (Class of 2023, 2022 USA U18)
PF - Nunu AGARA        6'2     (Class of 2023, 2022 USA U17)
CC - Lauren BETTS      6'7     (Class of 2022, 2019 USA U16, 2021 USA U19)
SG - Indya NIVAR        5'10   (Class of 2022, 2022 USA U18)
PG - Talana LEPOLO     5'7    (Class of 2022)

Reserve:
SF/SG - Stavi PAPADAKI   6'0    (Class of 2022, Greece Junior National Team)

Caught parts of USA U18 dominating win against Puerto Rico.  Nivar quite impressive coming off the bench.  She scored 10 points, made good decisions including several assists.  When she was in, she was playing PG.  While the quality of the opposition was not the best, Indya not only orchestrated the offense, but made some nifty moves, driving to the key and shooting.  I thought her defense was equally impressive.  Not able to see much of Ogden.
