Sweep! Stanford wins, 16-10. 22 hits. Great weekend for the offense, with power on display, especially today. Only 1 error for the three games, I think, so that's good, too.
Next weekend we face a very good pitching staff in the Bruins. Fortunately their offense isn't on the same level.

We have bats in the late spring and early summer. Pretty impressive at false dawn outside our kitchen. Bat city for about 15 minutes.

Does anyone know why Esquer has seemingly been so loath to play Vincent Martinez, this weekend's series notwithstanding? He was hitting north of .330 for much of last year (or was it actually close to .400?) and then completely disappeared from the lineup, even as a pinch hitter. This year, I believe he started game one and then disappeared again. When he was finally given an opportunity this weekend...well...one is quickly reminded of how sorely we've been missing him. Both from a contact hitter and (especially) power standpoint. I hope that even when Tommy Troy comes of his injury that it's Troy who is used as a pinch hitter. Martinez is leagues ahead of Troy as a hitter.

Hmm. The Dirty Brown Bears hit .258 as a team, good enough for 9th in the league. But they are THIRD in OBP at 0.393. The difference? They lead the league by far in HBP with 66 in 30 games. The next highest is Utah with 47. Stanford is last with 18.
Looks like they bunt a lot, so maybe not so dirty.

Let's chalk it up to Stanford having an abnormally bad day, and also, for 5 innings of that game we were facing a pitcher that had thrown 8 IP on the season coming into the game without giving up any earned runs. We scored his first earned run of the year in the 8th inning. Sure, losing 8-1 is not an optimal look, but it has to be given its place in the bigger picture. College baseball is a noisy, high-variance sport and ludicrous things happen around the country all year long. Besides, St. Mary's was 17-11 coming into the game and their RPI will rise quite a bit from its 195-esque level should they maintain that pace.
The next day D1baseball came out with their midpoint projections, having Stanford just missing out on hosting a regional. The team could have taken this as an act of clemency and show of confidence in them despite the previous night's bad home loss and 14-10 start to the season, and this weekend they responded.

Announcers on the Sunday broadcast hinted that Martinez was hurt. Regardless, big welcome back!

Another good sign. Jones seems to be getting his stroke back. If he gets to 2/3 of last season, Martinez stays hot, and Montgomery keeps it up, my main concern is pitching.

I concur. I think our hitters - as a group - have a chance to be one of the most dangerous lineups in the country. Seven of the starters have big time power and can also hit for average. Our two line drive hitters are solid at that doing just that. The pitchers' upside doesn't strike me as nearly as high: we have two stud starters and a handful of solid pitchers behind them.
