No doubt it was a problematic situation, and I'm sure many will disagree, but even if there's only a 25% chance of success it's correct to go for it. And I think the chance of success is better than that, assuming the 49ers had one great play prepared that they were saving for a 2-point conversion or for this situation. If they make it the upside is significant. As it was they took the delay of game and then punted for 35 yards, so a net gain of 30 yards of field position against a team that moves the ball in chunks.

Back to the Giants. Just read a story about the DH being part of the agreement for the NL. Of course here we are in February and are they even talking agreement ?
However who on the Giants now would be an Ideal DH ?
Or is that a necessary trade or free agent signing ?

To me it’s a 50-50 call. But the key is game type and flow. If it’s an up and down offensive game go. But this was not that. So punting, to me in that situation made sense. As for the lousy punt. Niners drafted wrong guy. Should have got Bailey.

I'm assuming that if the universal DH is implemented the Giants will proceed like most teams these days and use the DH spot for lineup flexibility and to rotate the roster. The Giants being a forward-thinking organization presumably will follow suit, and won't have a dedicated DH. Having a David Ortiz or Nelson Cruz -type is really the exception these days, and it seems unlikely that the Giants would add an aging slugger for this purpose. The last thing SF needs is an older player who is limited to one position. However, it would make signing someone like Nick Castellanos or Kyle Schwarber more attractive, not with the intention of installing them as full-time DH but knowing that they don't have to play them in the field every day.
Owners and the MLBPA held an acrimonious 90 minute meeting yesterday, spring training at least is surely going to be delayed. There wasn't any discussion about the universal DH, most people assume that it will be part of the final agreement but addressed later in the negotiations. Owners aren't in the mode of making any concessions at the moment. Given that the universal DH is a yes/no issue it will remain "no" until later in the bargaining process when it can be used to close the deal.

The Giants aren't going to do a strict Slater/Wade platoon but this goes to my point that the job will be shared, and that there will be different ways to maximize the talent at hand.
Roster construction is about assembling a versatile squad so that you can optimize the lineup on a day to day basis, maximizing efficiency by moving players around the field and the lineup based on matchups, parks, need for rest, injury recovery etc. This is how AL teams approach it these days and how NL teams will approach it.
Last year there were only five AL batters who qualified for the batting title with over half their at bats coming as DH, and Ohtani is a unique case since he would be playing outfield if he wasn't pitching. The other four DH were J.D. Martinez, Giancarlo Stanton, Yordan Alvarez and Nelson Cruz. But Cruz was the only fully dedicated DH. Alvarez DHed 98 times and played in the field 41 times, Martinez DHed 113 times and played in the field 36 times, Stanton DHed 108 times and played in the field 26 times. In any case, unless you have a hitter of that caliber you're not going to designate someone as the DH, it's too costly in terms of roster flexibility, and even if you do have someone of that caliber they still haven't been DHing more than 98-113 games because there are times when it's optimal to DH someone else and play these guys in the field.
I'm assuming that Kapler will be moving around a number of players daily and utilizing the DH spot in different ways. Even if they sign a poor fielder such as Castellano or Schwarber they aren't going to DH 146 games like Nelson Cruz, that would be way too limiting and an inefficient signing.
P.S. DH would have been pretty handy last year with Posey not able to catch that many games, he could have DHed or played first while someone else served as DH.

The roster will change. But as of today, I’d think Ruf would be the most heavily used as DH. His splits aren’t dramatic. And his glove, while not bad, is weaker than Slater/Wade etc. I could see Bart getting some ABs at DH as well. If his bat plays.

He could be, but I would be shocked if the Giants employed a "regular DH". Ruf could certainly end up being the most heavily used DH, but on the order of 50 games, not 100 (Yordan Alvarez/J.D. Martinez territory) and certainly not 150 (Nelson Cruz territory).

Ed Hickox was ranked last (91.3% accuracy).
Well-known umpires besides West who ranked in the bottom ten: Laz Diaz, Ron Kulpa, Hunter Wedlestedt.
