I don’t watch much men’s basketball. But I caught the end of tonight‘s game. Somebody please explain to me why our 7‘1“ player is spending so much time out by the three-point line. Thanks.

We were doomed once Rodman got that 3 pointer with the shot clock running out. We had a shot with an Angel putback at the last second, but it's been that kind of year for us where everything that can go wrong does.

No disrespect for BobK, but no, he couldn't. I think Stanford fans should respect what David Shaw was able to accomplish during his tenure as head coach. Being head coach of a D1 football team is an extremely difficult job. There are many examples of coaches taking over successful programs and failing right out of the gate. Shaw inherited a strong program from Harbaugh and took it to a higher level. Give the guy his due. He respected the program enough to step away when he felt that he could no longer lead it back to elite status. Not many coaches do that, but rather wait to get fired.
IMO, it's fair game to condemn Shaw for allowing the program to fall apart with poor recruiting and poor staffing. Hate him for that and drag him over the coals if you want. But don't take away all the good things he did for this program and hand them to Harbaugh. Shaw had this program competing at the highest level in his 5th and 6th years as head coach. In his 5th year, we won the Rose Bowl and finished the season ranked #3.

Shaw's not the football coach now. He WAS Pac-12 COY multiple times, won 3 conference titles, and 2 Rose Bowls. Years 9-12 were not exactly great, but he is an alum, was a key contributor in the JH years too, and is Stanford's winningest coach. Given the structure of college football and the NFL it is very unlikely any other coach will win 3 conference titles as a Stanford coach in my lifetime. I can only hope that Stanford finds a football coach that beats Shaw's accomplishments, but with NFL head coach compensation quickly approaching $20 million per year, I have my doubts.
Moving back to Haase...
Haase has nothing close to the type accomplishments one should expect for a hoops coach in year 2 or year 3, and Haase is still here in year 7. Worse, the trend is definitely negative as his "best" year was near the start of his tenure.
Tonight's game end exemplified the recent Haase era. An ultra-talented player made an amazing individual play to allow Stanford to keep possession of the ball with 2.7 seconds to play. That's plenty of time to run a decent play and get a quality shot. However under Haase the play initiated with something that was rather static and then that player heaved the ball towards the rim. The shot attempt was so bad and so early that Stanford almost had a 1983 NC State-like finish, but Haase's teams are never that lucky.
Is it possible that Haase could take a different program to the Elite Eight in the future? Maybe, but Haase at Stanford is just not working out. No need to bring in Shaw, Harbaugh, Monty, Johnson, VanDerveer or others into this one. Haase has had ample time to prove his value, and it is simply time to move on.
Haase must be a great guy to have avoided termination years ago, and I hope he has success at his next role.
As for Stanford, it is time for him to announce this is his last year so we can avoid a USC like tarmac situation.

If I had to define a single characteristic of Haaseketball (love that word), it would be a Stanford player driving into a thicket of defenders in the lane, picking up his dribble, and then struggling to find someone open to pass to. This happens like 10+ times a game, and it's been going on for years.
Haaseketball can't end soon enough.
Also, someone tell BC to update the thread title! In fact, someone should just write a bot to add a loss to the title 2 hours after the start of each MBB game.

Sorry Marty, but I still think there is more to the Shaw story. Yes, I'm grateful for the amazing years that occurred under his leadership, but I'm not so sure we know the total story of how he "stepped away." Was there a buyout in the mix... The last 4 years of decline, rapid decline, had many here seeing red with the Shawfense, the recruiting, the lack of urgency and the complacency. I thank him and wish him well. He's already interviewing and wish him luck. Denver, why would you hire the apple (Shaw) when you can hire the tree (Harbaugh)?
As for Haaseketball, I'm with Bob! The tarmac meeting should have happened last night and an infusion of energy coming from a change to one of the assistants would at least bring some interest and maybe intensity to this poor group of student athletes. Yes, he should have been let go earlier and definitely after last year. We've seen Muir play this movie before and we all know it doesn't end well. Going O-fer and being last in the conference at this stage is a fireable offense. The silence in Maples is deafening.

Per the advanced stats, tonight is our best remaining chance for a conference win. If we lose tonight, we have Cal at Maples next Saturday. Lose both of these, and 0-20 starts to loom as a real possibility.
Does anyone know if a MBB team has finished winless in the conference before? Ugh.

I don't think so, we did have two win conference seasons in 1969-70, 1952-53, 1970-71, 1992-93, and 1981-82
