RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - petersalas - 05-05-2023

I went to see Tennessee play in the SouthPoint shootout 2 years ago and had a great time. Although not a full time Basketball arena, it was great. The venue was great and teams and players were accessible and available for pics. The hotel itself was also really nice. I would definitely go back, especially for Stanford. My husband is a Tennessee fan and it was our first Thanksgiving without my mother in law.

I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to Bird on the staff. With recent transfer outs and rumblings that there is something going on or that people don’t want to play for Tara, well this could contradict some of that. I also think she would definitely be a players coach and may do great with fans as well. She actually went out of her way to meet me at the All Star game in Vegas by messaging me to see if I was still around.

No official word yet, but Stanford will play in a tournament somewhere in Las Vegas around the Thanksgiving holiday. It will not be @ the T-Mobile Arena.

UNLV hosts a Thanksgiving tourney @ their Thomas and Mack Center (nice venue) and then there's The Southpoint Shootout (also during Thanksgiving) at the Southpoint Hotel & Casino.  Their arena has often been used for rodeos and it's miles from the Strip.  I suspect it will not be there.

There could be another tournament and venue, but I'm currently not aware of one.  If I learn anything more I'll let you know.

Vegas hosts several holiday tournaments. The SouthPointe tourney has had the biggest names in the past. I would guess that’s the one we are in.

We also have road games at Creighton, at Tennessee, at South Carolina
And possibly at Gonzaga

The schedule looks very very challenging at this point.

I’m wondering how the search for a new assistant coach is going too?

I doubt it's @ South Point.  Stanford will play at an arena used totally for basketball while the South Point venue is not.

Historically, the Blue Jays are very tough to beat in their small arena, so yes- the pre-conference road schedule is shaping up to be tough.

I would be in favor of a coach not associated with Stanford with recruitment ties to schools outside California and who might be able to tap into players to help fill some of our performance gaps (i.e. guards who can create and score).

Bird's available...

I thought this referred to Sue Bird.

? Definitely meant Erica McCall. That she was coached by Tara is a plus, AND she's been coached by many, many others. Bright, a true leader, and would be great for both players and fans alike.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Card10Fan - 05-05-2023

I’m all for it. McCall would be a great hire. Young, energetic, understands the Stanford way. I saw her in Tucson this year sitting behind the bench and at the LA schools last year supporting the team. She obviously still feels connected to the program and coaches. The missing piece needs to be a young, diverse coach that can recruit effectively and connect with recruits and players. Her inexperience as a coach I don’t see as a factor. Tara is very experienced as is Kate Paye. They all just need to compliment each other in the end.

I sure hope I enjoy watching our WBB team next season more than I do reading this thread.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - stopandpop - 05-07-2023

As posted earlier, Stanford will play Creighton in their gym sometime during the non-conference season.

Yes, we defeated them last season in Maples, but it was not by a brobdingnagian margin.  They are very tough at home and virtually every one of their key players is back.

Today they won the USA 3x National Championship, defeating Duke (one of our opponents) and mighty Utah as well as Tennessee.

It will be a good challenge for us, but looking forward to it.

The article lists Winners and Losers in the transfer portal.

UCLA a winner due to Betts.
North Carolina a winner in part due to Nivar transferring from Stanford.

Stanford, Oregon and Arizona are listed as losers.

Lepolo and Ogden

That's a pretty star-studded line-up of invitees.

PGs who LEPOLO (Stanford, 2022 #71 overall and #14 PG) will be stacked up against:

Kiki RICE               (UCLA, 2022 #2 overall and #1 PG)
Talaysia COOPER   (South Carolina, 2022 #18 overall and #4 PG)
Londynn JONES     (UCLA, 2022 #22 overall and #5 PG)
Hannah HIDALGO  (Notre Dame-bound, 2023 #5 overall and #1 PG)
Kamorea ARNOLD  (UConn-bound, 2023 #6 overall and #2 PG)
Kiyomi McMILLER   (2024 #7 overall and #2 PG)

SF/SGs who OGDEN (Stanford-bound, 2023 #10 overall and #1 SF):

Cotie McMAHON     (Ohio State, Big 10 FOY, 2022 #23 overall and #4 SF)
Juju WATKINS        (USC-bound, 2023 #1 overall and #1 SG)
Jadyn DONOVAN    (Duke-bound, 2023 #3 overall and #3 SG)
Allie ZIEBELL         (Uconn-bound, 2024 #6 overall and #1 SG)

Based on college experience or HS ranking, maybe OGDEN has a better
chance of making the cut. I'm really surprised that there were only
5 wing (SF and SG) type players including OGDEN who were invited.
But that definitely gives OGDEN a better chance.

Here are the 3-point shooting stats for all the PG, SG and Wings who had one year of college:

Lepolo - 67 attempts at 37%
Jones - 133 attempts at 35%
McMahon - 57 attempts at 26%
Cooper - 21 attempts at 24%
Rice - 60 attempts at 22%

If Lepolo has continued to work on her 3-point shooting and performs well at the trials, she might have a shot.  For all the complaining we've had on this board about Lepolo's shooting she still shot a better percentage than any other 2022 guard/wing who is at the trials.  Based on their freshman season, Jones is probably a better shooter since she had more attempts and hit them at a comparable percentage, however McMahon, Cooper and Rice are not 3-point threats and defenses might leave them open daring them to shoot from 3.

Congrats Talana!

That's a pretty good accomplishment for LEPOLO, given the competition involved.

I'm surprised Juju WATKINS was not selected, but three others from PAC12
also selected:

- Kiki RICE and Londyn JONES of UCLA
- Grace VANSLOOTEN of Oregon

Congrats to Lepolo.  Should be a great experience for her.  I guess the coaches of that USA team are as blind as the Stanford coaches (sorry, could not resist).

Watkins was invited but looks like she didn’t actually attend the trials.

This is a brobdingnagian deal for Lepolo.  I take it as a sign that she’s going to make a really nice freshman to sophomore leap.

Agree.  Our starting five next season may be stronger because of Lepolo's strides and willingness to get better.
