At Oregon my concern was the setting and or hitting right at a defensive player especially at the Libero who had the skills to receive well and she did.

Two tough games this week. Thankfully at home

I don't see more than four PAC-12 teams -- possibly only three -- receiving top-16 seeds. UO and UCLA are in the driver's seat at 5-1, while we are bunched with UW, WSU, and Utah at 4-2. We play the other three 4-2 teams twice, so we will have a chance to make our case.
If we don't get a seed, we might be the unseeded team no seed wants to have in their pod, since we have the firepower to compete with any team, despite our passing and digging limitations.

Thanks for pointing out she's no longer on the roster. It doesn't come as a surprise to me. Next year Kelly Belardi, a very good setter, joins the team. The chances of Greene getting any playing time as a setter at Stanford is about nil. I'm going by memory (never a good idea). She might be the only healthy player who hasn't gotten on the court this season. If she has, it would have been only for a couple of rallys.

Sometimes WVB players realize that putting all the time into practice, lifting weights, traveling and never getting on the court is not what they want. I don't know her story but it wouldn't surprise me if she decided to focus on academics.

Stanford went from #16 to #26 in the NCAA rpi rankings.

At this point Stanford probably can't lose more than one match through the balance of the season to have any chance of getting back into the top 16 seeds. Very likely the first round of the NCAA tournament Stanford starts on the road.

UCLA and Utah are the only two PAC-12 teams in the top twenty RPI. Stanford doesn't play UCLA again. I don't see any stepping stone back to being a top 16 seed.

It's funny, but I just happened to watch the youtube video of the 2004 national championship match where senior Oganna NNAMANI, considered by many as arguably the greatest Cardinal hitter of all time, led Stanford to their 6th national crown. The announcers mentioned that the Cardinal struggled through the start of the 2nd half PAC 10 play. And my research tells me that

- they lost to St Mary's twice and to Penn State to finish their relatively easy OOC slate (definitely much easier than the brutal OOC schedule played by the current Stanford team) at 11-3;
- then lost to USC, Washington and Cal to sport a 7-3 PAC 10 record through the start of the 2nd half of PAC 10 play;

Then, all of a sudden:

- they swept through the last 8 matches of PAC 10 play;
- had to play at Florida during the NCAA tournament preliminary rounds where they beat Jacksonville (1st round) and host Florida (2nd round);
- then played at Wisconsin during the NCAA regionals where they beat Texas (R16) and host Wisconsin (Elite 8) to reach the Final 4;
- then beat Washington in the national semifinals before dominating Minnesota in the national champoinships.

Well, I thought, maybe the current Stanford team can duplicate that feat. Wishful thinking but, of course, they don't have a superwoman like Oganna NNAMANI, although I feel that the combined trio of BAIRD, KIPP and FRANCIS can collectively provide the firepower that NNAMANI unleashed, and boy, did Oganna unleash thunderous KABOOMs which made my jaw drop often, hahaha!

And speaking of NNAMANI KABOOMs, I also watched another youtube video when this was in utter display toward the end of the 1st set of Stanford's 2001 national semifinal match vs. Nebraska when, with Nebraska owning 4 set points at 29-25, then-freshman NNAMANI unleashed three (3) KABOOMs as Stanford rattled off 6 straight points to win that 1st set in dramatic fashion. WOW!

Interesting comparison. I expect Stanford to improve and any team can get hot at tournament time. I feel Stanford's backrow floor defense would have to improve immensely to allow Kami to put the pin hitters consistently in a position of hitting against one blocker.

I want Stanford to win at least one of its two matches this weekend at home to show they are making progress. If they lose both matches the Cardinal will likely be facing a strong opponent in the second round of the tournament and it will only get harder from there.

On the topic of exceptional players, a few days ago I was reading about Ipar Kurt on a B1G volleyball message board. There were a couple posters bent out of shape about the possibility of her coming to Stanford.

Kurt is going to an American high school in Turkey. They require a year of English immersion followed by four years of general classes so Kurt will be one year older than the typical freshman. Plus she will have played on the Turkish senior national team for three years. This one guy said Kurt should not be eligible for any freshman awards at an American college. Of course she will be.

Game scores were 28-30, 11-30, 30-27, 34-32, 20-18. The Cardinal improve to 20-6 on the year, 12-3 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies drop their first match of the season to go to 22-1, 14-1 in league play."

That match was one of the most memorable I've ever attended. It was in Burnham, since Maples renovation was underway. The change in crowd emotion from "we're toast!" to "WE WON!" was palpable.

[2] As you point out: Ogonna Nnamani -- IIRC, the win over Florida in post-season [also a 3-2 victory] was a match where Ogonna announced in the locker room at the break that Stanford was NOT going to lose that match... and she made sure they didn't.

I keep looking for someone to show they have that presence/terminator factor/whatever to take over and dominate and, unfortunately, I haven't seen it yet. Plenty of matches left, so it can still appear, and I'll keep hoping.

Plummer returns to her Imoco Conegliano club team in Italy. This team described by Volleyballmag.com as
"arguably the best club team in the world".

That most memorable match was a Washington loss that current Stanford assistant coach Courtney THOMPSON (the setter for Washington then) would rather forget, hahaha!

Incidentally, Bryn KEHOE was their highly-touted freshman setter who would set her Cardinal to a national championship. Well, there's another similarity with the current Stanford team whose setter Kami MINER is also a highly-touted freshman.

Yes, I agree. This week's home matches vs. Utah (who already own upset wins at Nebraska and at Washington) and Colorado (whose stock has fallen after the dismissal of their best hitter from the team) are MUST wins to help bolster their growing confidence.

I'm sure the mindset moving forward continues to be take it one match at a time, with the intent of winning every match, and that's great!

As a fan, I just want to see more fire in this team, a semblance of killer instinct from this star-studded assembly of Top 2 (BAIRD, KIPP, FRANCIS) / Top 5 (MINER, XU, Leilah SMITH) / Top 10 (VICINI) / Top 20 (CAMPBELL, FIDELAK) / Top 26 (A SMITH) / Top 36 (OGLIVIE) overall high school recruits. Only Texas and Nebraska can match this collection of former HS standouts.
