Yet, curiously, Stanford received NO votes in the coaches poll this week -- despite two more wins, and receiving 5 votes in the coaches poll last week. Doesn't make much sense to me. More votes in the AP poll, from 5 to 0 in the coaches poll.

Wrong thread? Hopefully not advance news of Sunday's WBB result.

triangle2 - triangle2 - 11-24-2025

We’re #26 in this week’s AP Poll.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - stopandpop - 11-24-2025

Stanford now heads to Vegas and will be tested by 2 very different teams.

Some have suggested that FGCU is not all that good ever since Karl Smesko left 2 years ago to the WNBA.  That's not totally correct.  A season ago (then) head coach Chelsea Lyles guided the team to a 30-4 record and into the NCAA tourney where they lost to Oklahoma.  True, several key players from that team are no longer there and Lyles stepped down after only 1 season.  Raina Harmon, their new coach, spent 8 years as an assistant for Iowa.  She is still running FGCU's quirky but dangerous offense where the team spreads the court and only shoots 3's or layups.  We have faced FGCU several times and two keys to our wins have been- contesting the 3's and keeping a defender in the post to prevent uncontested layups.  Stanford has been playing good defense, but our opponents have been able to draw our front line players (Agara, Somfai, MAS and Eschmeyer) away from the basket, and that must not happen against this team.

Colorado State recently defeated Oregon State at Gill; no easy place to win and they looked calm and efficient doing it. Like us, they are perfect on the season. Unlike FGCU, the Rams have talent at all positions and some of them can break down defenders.  Their long-time coach, Ryun Williams, is a great game strategist and CSU plays at a high efficiency rate where they work the ball to where they (believe) they have an advantage.  They make few mistakes on both sides of the court.  In this game, Stanford must find mis-matches and exploit them.  Will Kate Paye seize these opportunities?

Yes, at 7-0 we are behind 3-3 NC State.  Their losses include Rhode Island.  While it is always nice to get recognition in the polls, they really mean nothing until late February.  I hope our players can focus on just the next game up.  Also, I think we need to lose some games so our young players get a taste of how that feels.  Losing will make us play a little harder.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - Jskass - 11-24-2025

We just need to focus on winning each and every game. My guess is that we enter the polls once we beat a ranked team if we continue to win the other games. Combination of 'show me' attitude after last year and East Coast media bias previously referenced.

My sense is that the post-season blows everything out of proportion and that a lot of fans tend to overlook the regular season -- the only thing they see are W's and L's.  Hence it's ok to schedule a few cupcakes to boost the W total for optics' sake.  I wonder if there have been teams who won at least 20 games and did NOT make the tournament? (I'm sure there have been, but maybe someone with a better memory can elaborate.)

Agara becomes the first Stanford wbb player to take home ACC Player of the Week honors:

Is this question about Stanford teams with 20 wins or more specifically?

There's plenty of teams that win more than 20 games and don't make NCAA's. Portland was 29-4 going into the Stanford game last year.

It might be a different comparison for a Power 4 Team versus a WCC. Even then, 20 wins doesn't guarantee an NCAA berth. Minnesota and Colorado both had 20 win seasons last year but didn't get to dance. So, if you're on the bubble, you really need that marquee win or two to get you over the hump - and in a down year for the ACC - the chances of a quality win are rapidly dwindling.

The ACC has struggled somewhat so far - which bodes well for our chances to move up in the standings, but if we're a borderline team again, it may hurt us on the bubble. Duke has flummoxed people by losing to the Greenbriar Five, getting trounced by South Florida, and not living up to preseason expectations. NC State lost to Rhode Island and a very young USC, and Olivia Miles' TCU. Notre Dame did edge out USC after getting trounced by Michigan. Louisville had chances against Kentucky before falling. Virginia lost to UMBC. Adia Barnes and SMU have lost to North Texas and Grand Canyon. Florida State missed chances against Florida, Indiana, and Illinois. Boston College lost to UMass and Providence. Georgia Tech has lost badly to Georgia and got upset by Jacksonville. Pitt lost to mighty Scranton.

In any case - you get the gist. It's going to be hard to pick up quality wins in conference, and the risk of a bad loss with the conference being as down becomes slightly higher.

Somfai named NATIONAL freshman of the week (not just ACC):

Too early to yell after every Somfai putback, "Somf, there it is!"? Feel like that's already becoming one of her signature moves.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - OCcardinal - 11-26-2025

With 80 seconds left in the 2nd quarter of the Lehigh game, Coach Paye inserted a line up that included Alex, Lara and Nunu (plus Shay and Chloe). Despite Stanford starting that sequence on defense, the result was a 5-0 Stanford run that included:

- 2 blocks (by Alex and Lara)
- an offensive rebound (by Alex, on a miss by Chloe)
- 3 defensive rebounds (one each by Alex, Lara and Chloe)
- a made three plus 2 made free throws (all by Nunu)

I know Lehigh was otherwise overmatched in that game, but that sequence felt different. Stanford looked completely dominant in every phase of the game. I hope we get to see more substitutions with Alex, Lara and Nunu in at the same time.

UCLA better get back to the Final Four this season because it will literally be Sienna BETTS + who knows who else next season.

But remember, UCLA WBB's current payroll will drop, presumably significantly, so, like any pro team, they'll go on a buying spree for players in the 2026-2027 season.

FYI
Nov. 26, 2025:  At the halftime the score is:  UCLA 25 vs Texas 45
