not sure I'd be that quick to judge Hammer. he sure looks like he has game.
just by note, similar things were written about Bobby Jones, particularly after he picked up on #11 and walked off St. Andrews in the 1921 British Open. he learned to control/redirect his temper.

Hammer is a freshman. He also took the #2 player in all of college golf to the woodshed the day before.
Salinda played about as well yesterday as he's ever played. Salinda's also a First Team All-American, so Hammer losing to him is nothing to be ashamed of.

early in their match, the commentators were saying how Hammer is so even-tempered: you look at him and can't tell whether he's up a lot, or down. Seems like the moment got to him when it was slipping away on the back nine; maybe because of the difference between team golf and individual golf. It was a lot easier to be even-tempered in his first two matches when he was completely dominating them. I suspect he'll learn from it.

Everyone—me included—has beenheralding #10 Stanford’s win as a startling achievement.
Everyone—me included—missed something.
Stanford fared badly in the fall,
ending up ranked outside the top 25 and leading to the conclusion:
Stanford was mediocre.
But everyone missed something—actually, someone:
Henry Shimp.
Shimp didn’t play in the fall.
When he joined the team in the spring,
he promptly fired off five 68’s and a 69 among his first fifteen rounds,
and still another 68 in the NCAA regional.
Doing this for a golf team that already had Brandon Wu and Isaiah Salinda,
plus the 33rd ranked collegian, Daniel Snyder, was brobdingnagian.
Granted, even with Shimp Stanford wasn’t Oklahoma State.
But the Cardinal were at least as good as Texas, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest,
as they proved.

match play is very unique. once Salinda had Hammer down on the backside and just kept putting pressure on from tee/fairway etc, the pressure seemed to run through Hammer particularly on tee shots. looked like his squat/dip on longer shots became much more pronounced and his misses right due to being "stuck." a coldish putter didn't help Hammer either.

He came very close to winning the US Amateur last year, that is nothing to sneeze at.

One last add -
Matt Bortis the recently appointed assistant coach for the golf team played a role, winning on the course he played on for three years and against the last team and coach he played for is a good story - He also seems to have played in a role in developing our guys.

Conrad's assistant--and Snyder and Daulet--

Well-deserved. Even without winning the title, it is clear that Ray got more out of this team than any I think he's coached, plus he had them peaking at the right time.

Very well deserved. The PAC-12 oughta think about holding off on giving out their PAC-12 COY award until after the NCAA's - doesn't look good when the national coach of the year isn't even the PAC-12 coach of the year...

Shimp struggled at regionals for about 50 holes. Then he birdied 15, 16, and 17 and just missed a birdie on 18. I talked to Conrad after his round and asked him what he thought. He said those four holes were so important for his confidence going into nationals. I asked him if he was starting to believe in himself at this level, and he said that a good performance at nationals would probably do that for him.

More golf news from this week.
Brandon Wu and Joseph Bramlett qualified today for the US Open next week at Pebble Beach. Isaiah Salinda, Daulet Tulaubayev, Maverick McNealy and Cameron Wilson came up short.
Wu made it at sectional qualifying in Columbus, OH and Bramlett made it at Rockville, MD.

our apparent number three recruit in the 2020 class--
behind the USA's current number one and number two ranked juniors--
recently finished third in the big Thunderbird event,
besting the number one recruits for Texas (by nine),
Vanderbilt (by seven) and Alabama (by three).
