Wisconsin cancels football game vs. Nebraska after outbreak of COVID-19 cases.
I'm still surprised that the BigTen and the Pac-12 decided to go forward with football this year. It is bound to not end well, and had they stuck to the original plan they could at least had the moral high ground to stand on.

Paul Finebaum, SEC honk, is worked up because the Big 10 apparently requires players to sit out 21 days after testing positive for covid-19.
Calls the 21 days, rather than 10 or 14, "ridiculous," as Wisconsin is "done now" because their QB has to sit out this long and there aren't any byes.

I think Finebaum is the ridiculous one, but I am curious if anyone knows whether a.) what he is saying about this 21-day protocol in the Big 10 in true, and b.) is there a similar protocol for the Pac12?

Big Ten does require 21 day period out of contact with others on team. I'm not sure about the Pac-12.
Before you come down too hard on Finebaum, he didn't believe there should be a college football season this year.

There are now 2 FBS games cancelled this weekend, plus San Jose State is hosting New Mexico rather than playing there.
New Mexico was not allowed to leave its county last weekend so its opener at Colorado State was cancelled. This weekend they are not allowed to host a football game but are allowed to travel to San Jose.

The 21 days is not driven by fear of contagion; 14 days is adequate in almost all cases, especially if there is testing to document a negative and 10 days may even be enough.
The 21-day exclusion is meant to minimize the risk of a cardiovascular adverse event due to myocarditis. The protocol is 2 weeks off from football, and then 7 days where the athlete can resume cardiovascular activities under close monitoring by a physician (I assume some combination of MRI or echocardiography to screen for possible myocarditis).

And I think that myocarditis speculation was all the rage when the B10 reversed course; but I wonder if there are solid grounds for this precaution (or if perhaps this policy should be implemented beyond only those who test positive for Covid).

Wisconsin's second game has been cancelled.

They proactively cancelled even though they were under the Big Ten guidelines.
With the cancelation, Wisconsin must play all their remaining 6 games to be eligible for the Big 10 championship.

My sense of UWisc internal "politics" is that the Chancellor takes this very seriously, and has a bias to cancel; she was probably one of the Big10 leaders leaning against sports this fall.

The normalcy that football conveys is just not appropriate there right now.
The new football concern will be that opposing teams might not really want to go to Wisconsin. Would any other BigTen coach really want to spend 24 hours in Madison right now? Odds are so good they would come home with a mini-outbreak that might jeopardize their chances to win, or even play, future games.

Louisville vs Virginia postponed due to 15 cases (10 players) and several additional quarantined.
Both teams have an opening next weekend, if the outbreak can be controlled.

So far 8 FBS games this weekend cancelled or postponed, including Air Force, Navy, and Army. Hope the military has strong purotocols to contain the spread.

To be fair, Cal's situation was that they were operating with one positive test in one of the strictest municipal public health protocols around. But yes...their game got cancelled. And their quarantined position group should not be leaving their homes for 14 days...which means they might not even be in game shape by the time they have their next practice. (It's probably the OL.)

What an auspicious start for the Pac-12.
I updated the title of the thread as there is obviously a college football season, as pathetic and swiss cheese like as it is. The question now should be, can they finish the season?

Utah's in the middle of their wave...justifiably shut down. I still feel a little treasonous in my sympathy for Cal having lost their game over one case, but whatever, they knew their protocol.
I'm actually not sure if I'll watch the Stanford game. I've made no plans.
