I'm sure weak on baseball rules. So our guy beat the throw, but then stepped off the bag for an instant and was tagged out? Is that the rule at second but not at first? Confusing.

Yes and third. You can run thru first not second or third. Got to stay on the base if you don’t know where the ball is

To spare my nerves I only tune in when we're at bat.

Maybe being visitor hasn't been so bad. The half-inning earlier batting may have contributed for the hitting. That first half of the first inning was big.
But tonight's game is all about what pitcher can avoid being hit (or, for Stanford pitchers, avoid hitting the batters).
(I thought both coaches took a pitcher out while he still was pitching OK. That must be my lack of understanding of what is going on.)
Btw, ESPN's stats page for the game is at

Thank you. I've been using the stat page at D1 baseball scores.

Ouch! 3 straight walks is not a recipe for success. Let's hope Grech can pound the zone or this game is going to get much closer.

O'rourke couldn't find the strike zone. All he had to do was get the final out of the 7th and he walks his guy to fill the bases. Gretch coming in.

Regarding the lack of overturn on the reviewed HBP in the earlier game, do the umps (refs in other sports) get to see synchronized views from multiple cameras? Clearly the announcers thought the ball hit the sleeve, but as I saw it, the replay proved it didn't (from 1st base dugout camera, the ball was clearly below the sleeve, while from center field, you can't tell. From the 1st base dugout camera, you can't tell if it hit the jersey near the ribs, you have to judge that from CF. Synchronized viewing would allow the official to see this better.

I'm actually relieved to see that we only gave up two runs in that inning. Could have been worse.

Brendan Beck: 116 pitches on Saturday.
Alex Williams: 104 pitches on Friday.
Quinn Mathews: 59 pitches on Sunday.
Zach Grech: 56 pitches on Sunday.
I have to think these three pitchers are emergency use only.
Everything is an emergency now.
I suspect we'll see at least a few pitches from this group, mostly Williams.
For comparison, in 2019 we won our regional out of the losers bracket - 5 games.
In the Monday game, Beck pitched 3.1 perfect innings (36 pitches) after pitching 101 pitches in the Friday game. Of course, this time he pitched on Saturday - the downside of that decision.
Grech (in 2019) appeared in games 2 (22 pitches), 4 (10 pitches), 5 (17 pitches).
Little appeared in games 4 (45 pitches) and 5 (15 pitches).
For UCI, the apparently most prominent guy who hasn't pitched yet in the regional is Josh Ibarra, 19 appearances, 4.62 ERA, 1.26 WHIP.
Their regular #2 Pinto only went 48 pitches against us, so he could be back.
And they have a guy named Stanford in their bullpen ... maybe a secret weapon?
I keep coming back to this post by CT. We’re by no means out of the woods yet, but if UCI had gone with Ibarra to start this is a completely different game and not in a good way. We’re very fortunate that they decided to press their luck going with their ace on short rest and spotting us that 7-run first.
