They are quite bitter about the officiating. Obviously the refs were intimidated by the boisterous home crowd.

I walked in hoping we didn't get run out of our building. I have Cristobal to thank for that not happening. I think Oregon could have just run between the tackles the entire second half and won by two scores, certainly the entire fourth quarter.
I probably don't agree with the two scores. Remember, their best RB was out injured. BUT, for sure if they had done that we wouldn't have had anywhere near enough time remaining to pull it out. Cristobal was our biggest asset.

I suspect the absence of Oregon's off coordinator because of sickness hurt their play calling at the end of the game. Thank goodness. Cristobal can't hide, however. Everyone was shocked by the pass plays in the waning moments of the 4th. Seems like he would have been in charge of strategy at that point.

thanks for posting the replay. not only was the helmet-to-helmet targeting, but Thibodeaux also hit tanner mckee in the face with his forearm just before connecting with his helmet. he was clearly head-hunting. plus, there was another roughing the passer shortly afterwards. sure looks like oregon was trying hard to take mckee out of the game.

with any other quarterback, they probably would have succeeded.

Just a quick question -- who was the CB wearing #36 for us?
Good question, we don’t have a 36 on our roster, but he was the player who made sure Pittman landed out of bounds, thus sealing the game for us.
Anyone know who it was?

he took his helmet off shortly after the game ended, and that looked like him.
also, kudos to Gabe Reid (#90) for pursuing and pressuring the QB on that final play.

I think Flemming was genuinely flummoxed. I felt bad for him, I don't think he quite knew what to say.
Didn’t care for the old-style block S helmets.
#11 was absolutely targeting on the first play. My general feeling was that the Duck players were playing dirty throughout. Ducks had 10 penalties for 99 yards, not including penalties that were refused.
I don’t like the fact that a defender can run into a kicker on a PAT with impunity – essentially.
Tremayne’s foot injury was one of the most gruesome I’ve ever seen.
I couldn’t tell who was more sympathetic to the Ducks, the announcers or the referees. I do know that the post-game media (I’m looking at you, USA Today) thinks the referees heavily favored Stanford.
That was a
great Wildcat. Either the Ducks were mortally surprised, or we should bring out that play more often.
The Duck quarterback was mediocre at best. But Cristobal is worse. Ducks were lacking their OC, who was being evaluated for a non-COVID illness.
Ducks adjusted well at halftime. Stanford went three and out on three of their first four drives in the second half.
Stanford’s defense held on two of three 4th down attempts.
That was Stanford’s fourth overtime win against the Ducks, and their fourth win against an Oregon team ranked in the Top 10 since 2009.
Stanford is at ASU next Friday at 10:30 p.m. on ESPN…

We heard on ABC that Stanford is now 4-0 in overtime games vs. Oregon. But I think it's only 3-0 - 2012, 2018 and 2021. Am I missing another OT game? I don't see it in this series history.

I'll add that
Oregon blew a 4th quarter lead Stanford overcame a 4th quarter deficit in each of those games.

In the post-game presser, Shaw intimated that the Oregon defense was calling “disconcerting signals” while McKee was checking off, leading to the false starts. In the video highlights, I noticed that on the slant to Humphreys, both lines came up out of their stances and froze, seeming to expect a whistle to be blown before McKee rifled the pass. Shaw said he was “animated” on the sidelines, upset by the tactics, and will bring it up with the Rules Committee.

Oregon was cheap and dirty the entire game. That blindside helmet to helmet decapitation of Gilman should have been an ejection. There was another play in which someone went out of bounds and after the play was dead an Oregon player literally lifted a Stanford player off the ground and body slammed him. No flag! There were several other blatant examples.
And it’s been this way ever since they cold-cocked Owusu in Eugene.

Despite the offensive drought Stanford suffered during the end of the 2nd Q and most of the second half, the stats were pretty even in this game. Time of possession was almost even. We out passed the Ducks and they out rushed us, but Peat was the leading ball carrier in the game on YPC at 5.2 on 15 carries. Higgins was the leading receiver in the game with 6 catches, including the game tying TD at the end of regulation (the untimed down).
On defense, we had some guys really step up their games today. Toomer led all tacklers with 10, Damuni had 9 tackles and a sack, and JMF, Miezan, and Fox each had 8 tackles. I'm glad to see Damuni improving his game, as we really needed better play at ILB.

Well they clearly picked on Toomer several times on that out pattern, so I suppose pushing the WR out of bounds after a catch counts as a “tackle.”
DL and LBs did a much better job this week IMHO. But jeez those false starts on offense were just brutal.
I saw a few minutes of ASU/UCLA — Sun Devil QB is quicker than anyone we’ve faced so far.

I know. My point is we didn't have a real hope that year either....
I think our most legitimate shot at a national title was in 2015. The season-opening loss to Northwestern gave us zero margin for error; and the Ducks put the nail in our coffin when we got our second loss. In the end, we landed at 6th in the CFP rankings, just behind Iowa, who we then demolished in the Rose Bowl. That team, which was peaking toward the end of the season (apart from the loss to the Ducks at home), might have made some waves in the CFP. And the way McCaffrey, Hogan and Co. dismantled Iowa, they should arguably have been in the CFP ahead of Michigan State, which got blown out by Alabama in the first game. So the Ducks killed our hopes that year.

Next morning thoughts.
- If that wasn't targeting on Thibodeaux then there is no such thing as targeting. QB was in defenseless position, Thibodeaux lowered his head, launched off his feet, and smashed into McKee helmet to helmet.
- Thibodeaux is a really good player. When he went out, there was significantly less pressure on our QB.
- Not sure McKee should have been back in the game. Given the hit and McKee's subsequent collapse onto the turf, hard to believe there wasn't a concussion there. Despite that, his passes seemed crisper afterwards.
- When McKee is off he tends to miss high. That seems very dangerous, though he hasn't thrown an interception yet.
- The one clock management thing at the end was that Stanford probably should have used their last TO after West inexplicably slid down on his one play. However, the team was quite quick on getting McKee in and the getting the next play off - maybe 16 seconds or so.
- I understand (but wouldn't agree with) Oregon throwing the pass on second and 18 near the end. It should have been a safe pass, Stanford wouldn't be expecting it, and Oregon needed one more first down to seal the game.
- Oregon's real clock mismanagement on that drive was early on. They were snapping the ball with 20, 15 seconds left on the clock over the course of getting their first couple of first downs.
-The argument from Rod Gilmore as to why the holding shouldn't have been called on the late fourth down play in the end zone seemed to be because it wasn't called on second down play in the end zone. Both were close, the fourth down case slightly clearer.
- It's hard to understand how the fumble recovery towards the end of the first half was overturned on review. Couldn't see the critical event in any of the views shown on the broadcast, nor a series of events one could stitch together between views. From the replays I watched I would characterize the play as more likely than not a true fumble.
- As noted in the thread, Stanford also got robbed on the early run play by Jones. However, I don't think that is a reviewable call and given how the play unfolded I understand why the refs would call the play dead.
- It looks like we're facing a situation this year where good Stanford is quite good and can play with anyone on the schedule, whereas bad Stanford can probably lose to just about anyone on the schedule. At some level that's always true, but it seems more extreme right now.
RE: OREGON GAME THREAD -
French Rage - 10-03-2021
Whether holding or interference, there was a blatant and obvious push by the DB on the WR on the last play, right in front of the ref. That's always going to be called on a play like that. Tough titties, Ducks.

Stanford probably loses, arguably, their best four DL position players after this year. I guess possibly Pakola returns and Armitage develops but they could be as thin as ever next year.
