2 - Stanford -- 710 points (no way to know how many #2, how many lower here, but you can get to 710 with 20 voting #2, 10 voting #3)

So many teams are so scrambled by transfers, though, that it is entirely possible that some team that few have noticed may climb high into the rankings once play actually starts. This should be a less predictable year than most.

I expect 3 Pac-12 teams in the top ten of the final poll. And I expect Stanford to take down South Carolina in the championship game.

Some of Dawn Staley's pre-season comments express the 'inevitability' of a repeat National Championship; that the players she has assembled are just simply too talented and too good for anyone else.
Do I think the Gamecocks deserve to be the pre-season #1? Absolutely. Staley may have every reason to believe her team is destined to win another title. Personally, I hope she continues talking like this because the feeling of inevitability will (if it hasn't already) be felt by the players and that can breed overconfidence. Just to go on record- I love Alleah Boston's game and I was disappointed she was not selected to be on our World Cup team that recently won gold. I think she's better than Shakira Austin, who was selected.
This fan believes that the game on November 20th IS a big deal and a win will carry a lot of psychological weight and advantage for us as we go through the season, the PAC-12 and into the Tournament with a strong possibility of facing S. Carolina again.
I also believe that Tara and her staff will devise a great game plan around our 2 All-Americans and supporting cast and surprise the over-confident Gamecocks.

I remember the game on Nov 17, 2014, home game when UConn came in ranked #1, Stanford was #6. At the pre-game chalk talk, the comment was "we're ready" -- and Stanford won in OT, 88-86. Tara and staff did indeed have a great game plan, and it worked. I hope they can channel that memory for the Nov 20 game against South Carolina.

Beat me to the punch as I was just going to bring this article up.
I agree that we'll need Jump to take that next step as a consistent offensive threat. The last couple years with Brink, Jones and Lexie, she was often the fourth (and an often deadly) option on the floor, but with the Hulls gone and our backcourt a bit of a question mark, it would be great if she brought stability. It will also be tougher as she is clearly our #1 three point threat, so opposing teams will focus on her when she's outside the arc.

The answer is either to have another superb three point threat from another player or for Jump to develop the ability to slash around her defender. At a minimum, we need Jump to be consistent enough to force other teams to come out and thus open up space for our bigs. It is possible that she will score less this year than last but be much more important to our success, if she can just make it a 4 on 4 game for everyone else.

It's the consistency issue (you mention) that must be factored in the offensive schemes. Hannah has proven she can be absolutely deadly and a game changer. I think back to Scott Rueck's post-game comments when we played the 'Beavs up in Corvallis. They played us close into the 3rd. quarter and Hannah killed them with multiple 3-pointers, which Scott remarked on in the post-game. Then there have been times when Hannah's shot has been off.
If Hannah shoots without someone's hand in her face, I think she's close to 45% and that is darn good. The question I have is: can we set some screens that allow her to catch and shoot without disruption? I don't think we have done much of that in the past.

On a broader level, teams have played a zone defense against in the past and we haven't been the greatest in solving them. I feel like with our obvious strength in the frontcourt that we will have to find a way to break it, either with more consistent and varied 3-pt shooting than just Jump or something I felt that we don't utilize enough, but the midrange jumper in the soft spot in the zone from Jones or maybe Demetre or even Prechtel.

Of those 3, Jones is the most likely zone-buster off the midrange jumper IMHO. Prechtel is more of a 3-pt threat, although she did have that great game in the tournament vs Louisville (seems like ages ago) which IIRC was 6 for 6 in the 2nd half and a mix of 2's and 3's. Demetre is still relatively unproven and hopefully she earns the meaningful minutes this year to show us what she can do.
I might add Brink to the list. It will be interesting to see how her game changes with some time at the 4.

Charlie Creme believes that our non-conference schedule is not as strong as it should be:
"The nonconference schedule doesn't meet the program standard this year. South Carolina and Tennessee are the only top-10 caliber teams Stanford will play all season, and the Cardinal don't play a single nonconference game after Dec. 20."

I agree that this season's schedule is not as strong as it was last year, but given our uncertainty at PG and in the backcourt, that might not be a completely bad thing.
I'll also take this opportunity to point out that there are some top-tier programs that we never seem to schedule during the regular season (at least as long as I've been a fan): Notre Dame, Maryland, Kentucky, Louisville, among others.
Yea, we've met them a few times in the NCAA Tournament recently, but it's interesting that we haven't had them in our non-conference schedule.
