Correa to the Mets.

Heyman is the Giants fan's Lucy Van Pelt.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 12-21-2022

Now Farhan has to trade for a drawing card. Harrison has to be protected but everybody else is expendable.

How many season tickets were purchased after the initial “signing?”

As for free agents left how about Will Meyers or Profar? And maybe Longoria.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 12-21-2022

Giants are weak up the middle. Correa would really have helped. There are, in my mind, question marks at C, CF, SS and 2B.

Best FA Catcher is Gary Sanchez. I'd rather have Curt Casali.

Best 2B is Jean Segura, .723 OPS, injury prone and 33.

Best SS is good-field, no-hit Jose Iglesias or Elvis Andrus.  Both 1-2 WAR. Iglesias was .708 OPS last year. I'd rather have Crawford.

As for CF, best idea is former Giant Adam Duvall in RF, move Yaz to CF. Duvall hit 38 HRs in 2021 and 22 last year. But he'll be 34.

BTW, statistically speaking, believe it or not but the best remaining FA 1st baseman is Brandon Belt and the best remaining FA 3B is Longoria.

IF the Giants want to do better, they'd need to explore trades.

I'll take PR Disasters for $1,000, Alex...

My gawd. What a catastrafuck for the Orange & Black. They better not hide behind plausible deniability about whether they had signed Correa or not, and be 100% transparent. If what was posted here is accurate, that the Twins knew of this "medical issue" and offered more AAV than the Giants, and the Mets swooped in with a smaller offer than the Giants gave to get Correa, the Giants have some big time 'splainin' to do.

They can't deny the presser scheduled was to introduce Correa and hide behind the fact they never really signed him, so they can't talk about him. The Giants have an unprecedented situation on their hands that no team in any sport has ever faced to my knowledge. Some will claim the Giants found a new way to fool the fans into thinking they are committed to winning and competing in modern MLB, with the way this played out, and a lot of people - including fans of the team - will buy into it.

First, it appears they have someone leak to the press (including Susan Slusser) that they are signing Judge and don't put out their own story denying they were gonna sign Judge if that came from his agent and they didn't believe it, and look foolish as he re-signs with Yankees either way. Then this Correa disaster. It's not gonna inspire a whole lot of confidence in the Giants' front office operations, and probably will also hurt their ticket sales and ratings, as their bumbling ways turn off a whole heckuva a lot of fans.

This takes ham-fisted to another level. It screams "we are who you thought we were" (not willing to do what it takes to win) even though it might end up turning out that Correa spends the majority of his new contract on the IL, and make the Giants look smart in retrospect for pulling his deal after a concerning physical. However, in the here and now of this off season they needed o get very right, the Giants look like clueless pretenders, while the Mets, Dodgers, Padres, Phillies, all are the genuine article.

All we be forgiven if they sign Rafael Devers and Shohei Ohtani next year, right?

No chance.  You think FAs are going to want to play for a 4th place team that backed out of a big contract?  Players and agents talk. You can’t put lipstick on this pig. Laughingstock of baseball right now.  An organization with no guts.  That thinks it’s smarter than everyone else.  Diamondbacks will pass them.

Giants finishing up one of the worst offseason ever.  They had Judge for an hour and Correa for 6 days.  End up with another offseason  fulfilling their theme song “Grocery outlet. Bargain market.”

Hopefully a writer will have the guts to ask (1) why is it Mets are willing to take this risk and you aren’t (2) who made this decision - don’t hide behind “the group”. (3) what vetting was done pre announcement. (4). How do you now have any credibility with agents and major free agents.

Giants just shat their pants.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - cardcrimson - 12-21-2022

I'm not all that broken up by this. 13 years is a very long time. Who knows. Maybe they dodged a bullet. The doctors had to see something. The Twins did have a significant insurance policy on Correa's ability to play. Perhaps it would have been workable, but we'll never know. HIPAA laws and all.

If I were the Giants, I'd dump the old guys, and put stock in the youngsters, and collect several from other teams if possible--even buy out some contracts. Might be fun watching a group of talented young guys on the way up, then find ways to keep them for the long haul. Talented hungry youth can go a long ways, methinks.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 12-21-2022

First, I'll agree, but then (sorry) I'm going to disagree with both of you in this tulipmania market.

Agreed, we missed on Judge. He used us to get a higher offer from the Yankees, and that's fine. I didn't think then, and I still don't think he'll be a great mid-term or long-term play, not the way Ohtani will be.  I think the Yankees will get two great years out of Judge, two good years and the rest will be mediocre or worse.

Agreed, we missed on Correa, but frankly...even before the medical failure announcement, I was concerned about his health. 7 times on the IR in 8 years, most for back issues? Knee and thumb issues? That dude is used up. And Cohen/Mets have gone to $400 mms. payroll to sign him when the tax level is $233 mms.?  I don't think the value was there for Correa, not for a guy who played in 85% of his team's games exactly once since his rookie year.  Frankly, I think it says something that Correa took $35 million less to play for the Mets.  By signing with the Mets, Correa knows he won't measure up physically, in the same way that Pablo Sandoval knew he would eat everything in sight and tank big time when he joined the Red Sox and wouldn't sign an SFG contract with a weight gain clause.

The Giants signed four of the top 50 free agents, otherwise. The rest of the division combined signed two.

Now the Giants have to find value in the trade market. I have confidence that they will do so. Yeah, I know they won 81 games with demonstrably the worst defense in baseball -- and 107 games the year before, which everyone has conveniently forgotten.  I think the shift rule changes and the new FA's will put them in the low 90 win category.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 12-21-2022

OF is like an easy to read road map. Just exactly as I suspected.

Lex sounds like he was cheated on, with all due respect.

The Giants need to invest the 330 million in player development. Real actual development. And scouting. Hire a hundred more scouts. Find the gems that others miss. Just like Branch Rickey.

Use part of that money to convince high roller Japanese American investors and politicians to put a full court press on Ohtani.

You can sit back and do nothing, you can don a hair shirt and bemoan your fate or you can say “enough” and have the balls to move forward.

You had me right up until hair shirt. How many of those do you have in your closet?

As for the rest, spot on. Love the idea to invest in development, as long as they keep the guys they develop, unlike those guys on my side of the Bay.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 12-21-2022

A couple of Jebbie’s at SI must have had them. Or maybe I was their hair shirt.

I only want attackers in my foxhole. Me room for crybabies. I’d sign Mick’s Duvall and Will Meyers to play first. I would forget about Doubla A for Luciano and keep him at Sacto for a full year. I’d bail on Ramos and bet on Pomares who had a great last six weeks in the minors.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - BostonCard - 12-21-2022

Well, not being a fortune teller, I don’t know if SF dodged a bullet and avoided paying a third of a billion dollars to a guy who was going to spend much of his time on the DL because of a pre-existing injury and we will be glad that the physical gave the Giants a chance to back out, or if the failed physical was a nothingburger and in a couple years, the Giants will be kicking themselves over not having signed him.

Let me put it this way: Do you think this was a case of cold feet, or do you think they have a legitimate concern? Didn't appear to concern either the Mets or the Twins.

Phogge, please don’t use “with all due respect “ on me.  Much rather you simply say I’m full of shit.  Won’t bother me a bit.

As a fan, I do feel cheated.  . Giants said they were going to be players in this market. Instead they were clowns.  Got used by Judge. And now this.

Investing in player development and signing major free agents are not mutually exclusive.  You know that.  Giants front office is risk averse in the extreme.  They balked. Correa walked.

Ohtani ain’t coming to SF. Dodgers are clearing the decks to bring him on. And they actually close deals.

What does any of that have to do with Correa?

Boegarts is worth more than the 4 the Giants  signed. Plus Padres have just a tad more talent. Dodgers are clearing the decks for Ohtani. And btw, their farm system is significantly better than the Giants.

21 is IRRELEVANT.  That was Posey. With assists from Crawford and Belt having their best years. None of that remains.  Which is why ‘22 was foreseeable. I said it in March.

This team is worse.  75 wins.  Maybe.  Unless something major trade wise happens.

The lineup sucks.  They are old.  Slow.  And they lost their ace. Stripling and Maenea don’t equal Rodon.

Cohen doesn’t care what luxury tax penalty he has to pay.  Man, I wish the Giants had that attitude.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - PAsportsfan - 12-21-2022

The Giants NEVER sign the MEGA buck Free Agent. Oh, they always come up "just a bit short" and the MEGA buck Free Agent signs elsewhere. Why does this ALWAYS happen? Because they get away with it...fooling their fans.

I can't recall all the MEGA FA, but it started when they passed on Vladimir Guerrero when Bonds retired and continues to this day.

Help complete the list of MEGA FA the Giants offered but "just missed".

Harper in 2018

Was Aroldis Chapman offered in 2016?

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 12-22-2022

Weep, weep, weep.

None of you guys knows diddly poop about the reasons for rejection. I’m in NYC right now and this is the big time. SF and the dilettante Bay Area is backwater. Stanford is still an insular Farm.

Yep, the signing of Bonds was so fantastic that they actually made one WS. One. I probably won’t be around for the 13 years of non-contract Correa but I bet neither will he still be in uniform. How soon in 2023 will he be disabled?

I’ll buy you a Mets cap if you will stop crying.

Lex, bet you a big Westlake Joe’s dinner that they win more than 75.

I agree, they haven't signed the mega-buck free agent since that enormous success, Barry Zito and they missed out on the other enormous success, Pablo Sandoval. The Giants' attendance has declined seven years in a row, on a per game basis (not including the COVID years), but basically every year since 2015. Judging by the hoards of people who haven't been attending games at Oracle, I would say that the Giants are not fooling their fans and not getting away with it.

1. The Mets have a $400 million payroll, and their luxury tax is $111 million. I know you and I don't have to pay it, but they won't come close to recouping it. Good for the Mets that they have the single owner in all of MLB wno is willing to reach deep into his pockets.

2. 2021 was year before last, not ten years ago. 107 wins gave you no confidence in the team's management?

3. I feel a wager coming on. You pick 75 wins or less. I'll take 86 wins or more. If the Giants win between 76 and 85, no harm, no foul. Otherwise, loser either buys lunch or sends a nice bottle of wine to the winner.

Deal?

Deal?

Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, Padres all have owners willing to spend big.  Braves as well.

As for Cohen, the value of his franchise will increase. He will make money. But seriously why do we care?  Lacob is way over the cap.  And while they are struggling this year, he’s put together 4 championships.  More to the point, the value of the franchise has skyrocketed.
