Boston papers are reporting that the Red Sox are out of contention for Imanaga and his 92 mph fastball which he throws 60% of the time. And the Mets have already added Manaea. Multiple media sources are pointing to the Giants as the leaders. Imanaga's posting ends this Thursday at 5 p.m. Here's hoping...

Hope you are right about his talent. He threw a meatball to Mookie who missed hitting it out.
Wow! $24 million for two years with a one year opt out for Manaea. I was hoping G's would sign him, but not at that price.

Giants have been told they're out of the hunt for Imanaga, and are now focused on 33-year old, 5'7" Marcus Stroman. All-Star last season (at 10-9, 3.95 ERA, no idea why), All Star in 2019, made $25 mms. in the last year of his contract last year. 1.259 WHIP, about average for his career.
Junis & Beck were slightly better than him, Winn slightly worse. Stroman pitches very well at Oracle, career 2.45 ERA, keeps the ball in the park, doesn't give up many hits.
BTW, Mauricio Llovera, 1.69 ERA for the Giants last year is back on the market as a free agent.

The free agent season is actually turning out worse than I had predicted. Instead of overpaying at the top end, it looks like Zaidi is doing nothing. The Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Cubs, and Red Sox are all shopping at Nordstrom. Zaidi walked through Nordstrom and took a Lyft to Value Village.

Speaking of the Dodgers, their deal with Ohtani will enable him to circumvent as much as $98 million in California state income taxes. California's controller is asking Congress to eliminate that loophole.

If memory serves, Fergie Jenkins holds the record for most HRs given up by a Cubs pitcher in a season with 35 in 1973. Imanaga and his low-90s "fastball" might challenge that record, especially since he likes to throw it 60% of the time.

Fair enough. But the art of bidding not quite high enough seems to be Zaidi’s calling card. At a certain point, you have to wonder if the goal isn’t actually to sign these guys but to look like you’re trying to sign them solely to mollify the fan base. I think he’s much better at signing people on the margins: bounce back deals, flawed platoon guys. This year was an opportunity to upgrade a boring roster of second tier guys. Even if Lee turns out to be great (fingers crossed), this isn’t a contending roster even if Chapman gets signed.

I just don't think players -- particularly hitters -- want to come to SF. I don't think it's the city or the state necessarily...Oracle is a very difficult park in which to hit, the fourth most difficult park in which to hit a home run, statistically speaking. What power hitter wants to go to a place where HRs go to die?
The Giants paid double what Lee's originally assessed value was...and he hits for average, not power. And along those lines, I realize he comes from the KBO, a league between AA and AAA...but he holds the KBO's career batting average record. Not too shabby.
The Giants played 12 rookies and six second year players (Bryce Johnson has since departed). That's exciting to me...I think a few of them will really excel this year. Part of the excitement will be fielding...the Sacto Rivercats had the worst team fielding percentage in the PCL, but the highest caught stealing percentage, and the third most double plays. Hopefully they get some good coaching this year...

Hit 36 HRs for Miami last year, and he crushes it at Oracle...has his fifth highest OPS here of the 33 MLB ballparks in which he's hit. .250/.341/.512/.853 last year. 32 years old, and the three prior years were just okay. Generally plays DH, can play corner outfield, but bad Rtot (-6), so he'd fit right in. Ninth in WPA (Win Probability Added) last year. 2021 WS MVP. Made $15 mms. last year, declined a $9 million player option. Not fast, grounded into 20 DPs last year. Lots of nagging injuries in 2022, healthy last year. Has only played 100+ games 4 times in a 10 year career. Reputed to want $16 million.

I'm trying to figure out how Soler and Pederson are the same other than they're the same age, had the exact same number of plate appearances (425) and both are slow. Otherwise, Soler's results swamps Pederson's. Pederson had 14 doubles, 15 HRs, .764 OPS, 111 OPS+ and a beer belly. Soler had 24 doubles, 36 HRs, .853 OPS, 128 OPS+ and was named an all star. The only area where Pederson was better is that he got paid more.

A slow, lousy fielder. SF has had more than their share of guys like that (Pederson being the poster guy). Until they get younger and more athletic, they are going nowhere.

I don't disagree. But Soler hit 36 HRs and 24 doubles last year and is healthy. He would have been 2nd on the team in doubles and the next most in HRs was Flores with 23. And we need a DH anyway...why not a righty who can hit bombs, instead of whichever platoon OF isn't playing in the field that day?

Kim will be a free agent next year (he has a mutual option for 2025 that he will surely decline). SF can take a run at him at that time.
Sorry, but the idea of “taking a run“ at anybody the following year is to me another example of the definition of insanity. The Giants “take runs” at lots of players. Unfortunately, they end up having the runs.
Right now Zaidi is, I’m sure scouring the bargain bins. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Giants sponsor should be Grocery Outlets. I’m sure there are pitchers out there who were hurt, bad or preferably both, that he can sign to a low end contract that will please the pernicious ownership group.
Snell and Montgomery will probably command either five-year contracts, or high AAV’s over 3, neither of which the Giants will be willing to do. Stroman is more likely to be someone they can get on a two year deal with a second year- player option. Zaidi loves those like I love a medium rare prime cut NY steak with a good glass of cab.
Stroman is also a jerk.

Giants have avoided arbitration with Yastrzemski ($7.9 million), Estrada ($4.7 mms.), Stanford's very own Austin Slater ($4 mms.), Wade ($3.5 mms.), and Rogers ($3.2 mms.). The only arbitration-eligible player who didn't get a deal signed by today's 1 p.m. deadline was JD Davis, so his side and the Giants will need to exchange arbitration numbers soon. Davis is an interesting one. He projects out at $6.8 million, but his OPS dropped 150 points in the second half. And he did improve at 3B. Still...the Giants have high hopes for Casey Schmitt. Can Matt Williams turn around Casey, like he himself turned around nearly 40 years ago? It took Williams three years before he figured it out...what will it take Casey?
