Actually...not quite right. The 1924 U. S. Open was played at a private course (as were the 27 U. S. Opens before it), Bloomfield Hills in Michigan. Nice course, I played it once and I attended a few events there when I worked in Detroit.
There are 10 courses slated to host the U. S. Opens between now and the year 2042. The answer is one of those 10.

That is stunning. For what little it's worth, a friend and classmate from grad school ran it, or at least ran programming in the early 90's.

If memory serves (with confirmation from Phogge), it was at Bethpage Black, with Tiger Woods winning. I remember the raucus crowds, and the fun the event seemed to be.

It was Pebble Beach, 1972. Winner, Jack Nicklaus. Bruce Crampton and Arnold Palmer finished 2nd and 3rd.

Stanford angle: It was Tom Watson's first U. S. Open, he finished tied for 29th with Julius Boros, Miller Barber, Lee Elder, Herry Heard and Dave Eichelberger.
Bethpage Black is a public course, their first US Open was 2002. Stanford angle: Tiger Woods won.

Christian Moore of TN hit for the cycle tonight at the CWS. In doing so, he became only the second player to accomplish this feat. Who was the first?
Clue - He played and coached for CWS winners (different schools) and had a nine year big league career.

Thinking about the 2025 Ryder Cup in late September 2025 at Bethpage Black. Here's a few Stanford-related Ryder Cup questions:
1) Which Ryder Cup team(s) have been captained by a Stanford graduate?
2) The 2025 Ryder Cup team does not yet have a captain, but a former Stanford student has been asked. Who is the putative captain, and who is the backup if the former Stanford student declines?
3) Which Stanford alum is currently ranked in the Top 10 in Ryder Cup points? (Specifically, he's #9).
4) Name all former Stanford golfers who have played on a Ryder Cup team.

All good answers.
1) Watson captained the 1993 and 2014 teams.
2) Tiger Woods has been asked to captain the team and is considering it. If he turns it down, the reputed backup is Stewart Cink who has publicly stated that he's ready to be captain. Cink has played in five Ryder Cups and was a U. S. Vice Captain in Rome.
3) Maverick McNealy is ranked #9 in Ryder Cup points (nailed it Phogge).
4) You're right, Bob.
- Bob Rosburg played on the 1959 Ryder Cup team. Rosburg and fellow rookie Mike Souchak beat Bernard Hunt and Eric Brown 5 and 4, then Rosburg beat Harry Weetman 6 and 5.
- Tom Watson played in 1977, '81, '83 and '89. He was on the '79 team, but didn't play because of the birth of his first child. Watson was the captain's choice in 1989. Tom's overall record was 10-4-1.
- Tiger Woods played in 1997, '99, '02, '04, '06, '10, '12, '18. He's 13-21-3 overall.

Willie Mays was signed in 1950 by Giants scout Ed Montague signed him to a $4,000 contract. The Giants offered another player a chance to play for them. Said player had a Giants contract in his hand, but another team offered him $50 more per month, so that other player signed with the other team, though his inclination was to join the Giants and Willie Mays.
