Aaaagh. Revuelta with a 3 putt. That's her third short miss in the last 6 holes. She could have squared the match. Instead she is 1 down going to 17.

Revu overthinking on that dink putt. Could have tied it right there.

Xu wins! Tied 2-2. Revu must win.
Revu down 1 with one to play. Must win hole 18.

Do or die to send it to extra holes.

Revu had two good chances to send this to extra holes. Looked like the pressure got to her. Great season. Should have won, but . . . freakin' match play.

Sad sad sad mostly for the team. But also for us hards. One made putt away for more golf

Not meant to be. Kudos to Xu for winning two of her last three holes to take her match. And Revuelta won two of her last five without losing any, but needed to win at least three.
Kudos to Northwestern; they took down the #2 and #1 teams in the country on their way to a national title.

Gotta confess that I was very confident that Stanford was going to walk away with this championship.
Done in by match play once more. Martin's opponent in particular kept making difficult shots to stay ahead and made a clutch shot after the match was tied after 17.

BTW, final match play stats:
Ganne went 2-0 (with 1 match all squared when it was called)
Xu went 2-0 (though she was losing 1 match when it was called)
Martín Sampedro went 2-1
Örtengren went 1-1 (and was leading 1 match when it was called)
Reuelta went 1-1 (with 1 match all squared when it was called)
Everyone contributed, but no one was 3-0.

I think that Ortengren was 1-2. She lost to Northwestern and her match against Florida State ended about the same time as the Ganne-Woad match.
And Xu was 2-1. She lost to her Virginia opponent.
Every one is eligible to return and play for Stanford next year. I think they all would benefit from another year of college golf. But maybe someone is eager to get started professionally.

If we do lose someone we do have depth on this year’s roster. Here are the two incoming Frosh

A crap shoot, yes; but riveting theater. I doubt the NCAA and TV guys are regretting this format.

Yes, both the FSU and Northwestern matches were equally riveting theater although Stanford fans were not happy about the final result of the Northwestern match.
One could describe the NCAA tournament for men's and women's basketball as a crap shoot. There are frequent upsets and the best team based on regular season stats often doesn't win the NC.

It’s not the fact that there are upsets that make the current version of the NCAA golf tournaments a crap shoot.
It seems to me the more apt analogy would be if, instead of playing actual basketball games like every team had all season and in the first four rounds of post season, the basketball Final Fours consisted of free throw shooting contests.

I don't follow your analogy. In the NCAA golf tournament they weren't playing some subset of the sport. They weren't only putting on the greens or only teeing off.

I disagree with the argument that match play is somehow not a legit determination of the national champ. Match play in golf has been around forever. I'd agree if it was some reduced event, like playing 3 holes or something like that. But each of these players had up to 18 holes to get it done. Stanford just didn't play well enough, and they know it. Nothing unfair/happinstance about it. If they play 10 times, Stanford probably wins 9. It was a big upset - that's what happens when you don't play well enough.
I also have to say - been around this board for quite some time. There is (IMO) a lot of after the fact whining when things don't go our way. It's a bad format, a bad draw, the refs, the schedule, the travel, etc. etc. Really all that happened here is that we got beat, fair and square.

I agree. All participants knew the format and were able to "train" for it. On that given day, Northwestern played better. It is that simple. Yes, for the players getting beat sucks, but that would be true no matter what the format.

Boy, it's hard to make a joke around here without people getting really upset... or making inaccurate assumptions that folks are whining, etc.
Of course we got beat fair and square. Indeed, this was foreshadowed when we got beat in the ACC tournament match play. And, obviously, Northwestern was no Harvard women's basketball team; they have some very good players. I hope this outcome helps our team develop that killer instinct necessary to make match play less of a crap shoot next deason.
Still, when you have a championship set-up where the best team over four rounds of team golf [sometimes best by a very wide margin] ends up NOT being the champion many more times than it IS the champion due to the fact that the champion is determined by three rounds of an entirely different format than is played for the remaining ~80% the season's competitions, it strikes me as a legitimate object of criticism.
If the champion is going to be determined by match play, fine. Make the WHOLE tournament match play. Or maybe do four-ball...or alternate shot. They're all long-recognized forms of golf competition. And make the entire golf season match play. [SPOILER ALERT: Those are all joke suggestions; no need to point out that doing so would be a logistical nightmare...]
The match play format was introduced primarily [if not entirely] for the benefit of television coverage. Sigh... Everything TV touches...
Also, if you don't like my free throw shooting contest analogy, I'm not a big fan of soccer championships being decided by penalty kicks, either, but realize that, without using something like that, some soccer matches might never end. That's not true for golf.
