Not a good start. 12 to 5 utah.  6 0 run for Utah. Serve receive struggling

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-14-2021

What a comeback!  Stanford wins the first set 26-24, after being down 23-18.

Question, if there is an injury stoppage, no point is awarded?  Stanford was on the attack and likely to win the point but the play was stopped due to a Utah player being down (hope she’s ok).  No point was awarded, but that seems unfair.

BC

Yuck.  25-17 Utah in the second.  Utah closed out well.  .118 hitting in that second set.

Hamley blames poor execution at the intermission.  I think some people on this board would go apoplectic.

Zaddy Hambly looks heated and animated on the sideline.  Oh my, such a turn on ??. Hopefully that will inspire the team and play better.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-14-2021

I’d be animated too with our passing.  When we can get the ball to Miner in a good spot, Utah is struggling to stop our attack, but half the time it is an errant pass.

BC

25-22 we take the third set.

BC

Stanford on a roll in the fourth.  We are up 17-9; need to close it out.

BC

And just as I say that, Utah goes on a 4-0 run.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-14-2021

Boom.

Stanford wins 3-1; 25-15 in the fourth set.

Miner was fantastic.

Yes!

That's the way, aha, aha, I like it, aha, aha!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-14-2021

Fourth set, the serving got better, and it was Utah that was discombobulated while we were by and large in system.  Miner is so athletic, Hamby is now bringing in Xu when she’s in the front row.  She had four kills two blocks and six digs on top of her 43 assists.  There was a Utah overpass where she just hammered it, and she had that kid in a candy store smile.

If the passing gets better and she starts varying her sets a bit more, look out.  I’d love to see some quick sets once she works out the timing with her hitters.

As others have noted, I think the passing is too inconsistent for us to be a real threat this year, but this team is going to get real good.  Next year, Kipp, Francis, Baird, Oglive, Vicini and Miner should all be back. If we can get some stability in the back, i think we’ll contend for a title.

I agree.  It's not going to happen this year.  Maybe next year.    I like Xu coming in occasionally and setting.  The other team doesn't expect it and the blockers are caught off guard.

On a volleyball website the consensus is Tara would never let Maggie Mendelson play basketball and volleyball.  A couple posters stated Mendelson was leaning toward volleyball only anyway.

Of course, on one occasion it caught us off guard as well, as both Xu and Miner went to set the ball.  But yeah, it’s a good change of pace, plus Xu is a pretty good server.

If Mendelson plays both WVB and WBB, her scholarship will count against WBB, as the higher revenue sport. Will WBB have room scholarship-wise?

It's too soon to know, but if Tara doesn't want to take someone who would only play basketball part time, she can probably get other strong players to fill the class. WBB recruiting has been going well in recent years. There will likely be four slots to fill in 2023, though there could be more if the 2022 class turns out to be less than four.

I believe the whistle was blown before the point was scored, so it has to be replayed. Can't award a point for a "likely" kill.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BostonCard - 10-15-2021

Yeah, the whistle was blown before the point was scored, but one could imagine how this could get abused; a team could feign an injury on a free ball on a crucial point or something like that.

I guess in the end you have to trust that sportsmanship is still a thing. At the time it was just a bit frustrating that we got a nice set for our outside hitter and the point was called off.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-16-2021

The rule is if the head official sees a major injury during a play, the whistle should be blown, stop play immediately, and call a replay.

I suppose it might be possible in the middle of a rally for a player to fake an injury when the other team looks like it is about to score a critical point.  I've never seen that happen at any level of WVB.

Now soccer, faking an injury, that's a different story.

Also a different story in American football.

WVB: Looking back at the 2016 Championship Season - joemontes - 10-16-2021

The 2016 Stanford WVB national championship season was very memorable in so many ways:

-  re-ignited Stanford's supremacy in WVB after a frustrating 11-year drought, including a 3-year stretch (2006-2008) where they lost in the national championship match

-  featured probably the tallest frontline in WVB history, with 6-8 LUTZ, 6'6 PLUMMER, 6'6 FITZMORRIS, 6'4 VANJAK, 6'3 AJANAKU and 6'3 HODSON

But there were two key events that changed the destiny of this team:

-  sophomore Hayley HODSON, the # 1 overall recruit from the Class of 2015, was only able to play in their OOC schedule, then was sidelined for the rest of the season due to concussion; this paved the way for freshman PLUMMER to suddenly permamently move from OPP to OH1 in her young collegiate career

-  Stanford initially used a 6-2 during their OOC schedule and the first 7 PAC 12 matches, with setters in senior Kelsey HUMPHREYS and freshman Jenna GRAY.  Then, they completely abandoned this scheme and permanently moved to the 5-1 with GRAY as the setter, starting with their 8th PAC 12 match which was a home victory vs. ASU, after back-to-back home setbacks to unranked Utah and Arizona suddenly relegated Stanford to the middle of the PAC 12 standings with a 4-3 record and a 10-5 overall record (which also happens to be the current overall W-L record of this year's Stanford team, but with a slightly better 5-2 PAC 12 record) and dropped their national ranking to #14.

That ASU win was followed by a road loss at UCLA, bringing their PAC 12 record to 5-4 and 11-6 overall, and Stanford's national ranking plunged to #17.  At this point, Stanford was in danger of not hosting the NCAA tournament 1st and 2nd round (which also happens to be the current concern for this year's 18th ranked Stanford team entering this week's home stand vs. the Mountain teams)

However, they won 10 of their remaining 11 PAC 12 matches to up their final PAC 12 record to 15-5 and 21-7 overall, which then gave them a #6 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and the right to host the 1st and 2nd rounds.

And the rest is history!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 10-17-2021

As a Stanford wvb fan I enjoy your fact based comments.  When Dunning switched Plummer to OH from OPP her parents thought it was a crazy idea because Plummer had never played OH.   It turned out to be one of the best ideas in program history.

Big game today at 1:00 against Colorado.  The Buffs are without their best offensive player because she was indefinitely suspended for breaking team rules.  I like the Colorado coach.  He is a no nonsense, old-school guy.
