Reports indicate he was the headliner. Panik was good defensively and had shown good offensive upside before a down year. And was about to hit his prime.

The writing was on the wall last week for Panik when they acquired Scooter Gennett.
The Panik DFA hurts as a fan because he:
1) Was a home grown player
2) Was a #1 pick
3) Helped the Giants win the 2014 World Series
4) Had so much promise but was plagued by injuries
5) Is so young at just 28
Usually when a guy like Panik is DFA'd, he is past 30 and has clearly declined physically. The truth is Panik never had his best years because he was injured in the prime of his career. I remember 4 years ago some analysts thought he could be a batting champion because he had such great plate discipline and a compact swing. And he was a superior defensive player too.
It sucks to see a guy like this go, but the team is the priority, not any individual. The reality is Panik just is too much of a liability to keep him around when the Giants have more productive players at his position. Hopefully Panik takes time off, gets his mind and body healthy, and can come back to resume his career as a better version of himself.

Ouch again. Well, at least they got the suspense over quickly. Having 2 AAA pitchers in the rotation doesn't help.
6 hits today, pathetic. They finally scored in the 9th after Pillar let an 0-2 80mph slider hit him.
It's ironic that right after the July 31 trade deadline, they start August going 1-6.
And now Cincy is ahead of them in the loss column, and even SD only one back.
Time to contemplate Stanford football, and if that proves painful, WVB.

Fangraphs had the Reds finishing ahead of the Giants on July 31. It seemed a bit implausible at the time, but doesn’t now.

I don’t know if Bum will be with the Giants next year. I do know there will be a statue of him outside Willie Mays Park someday. I’ll be there for the dedication. What a joy it is to watch him compete. He is special.
Fast track. It’s increasingly a young mans game.

Bum is adapting. He will sign with the Giants as long as he accepts three years with a team option for the fourth.

I assume he will listen to all the other offers however. The real question will be how many five (or more) year offers will he get? While he is not "old", there have been too many examples of bad long term contracts given to pitchers who didn't last five years. These days, teams are probably hesitant to do so. Three years with a team option for four is a "team friendly" deal, but it is probably realistic. Hopefully, Bum will see it that way too, or alternatively, no one will give him five or more years at big dollars.

He's still the most difficult to strike out (1st in NL this year). Still has excellent range in the field (2nd in NL). He just can't hit.

Cano was really starting to hit well and then tore his hamstring when the Mets were up big in a game they won 13-2. Brutal, but one man's misfortunate is another's opportunity. Mets open a weekend series at the Nationals tonight, with Strasberg vs. Stroman. Really hoping the Mets can take 2/3, as they are going to be the team I root for (that has a chance) to make the post-season!
The Mets broadcast crew is quite entertaining too.

That would be interesting. My guess is that the offers were lower than their value. GMs are holding onto their top prospects. And rentals have become disfavored. Greinke got a big return for Arizona. But the Astros control him for a couple years. That makes a gigantic (I need to avoid that annoying word change garbage) difference.
The Dodgers are a good example of not trading top prospects. It’s worked for them in the past. This year, they refused to part with Lux, a middle infielder and their no 1 guy. And they need help in the bullpen. Big time. The only successful season for the Dodgers is if they win the World Series. And the impediment may be the bullpen. Yet they held on to Lux- despite the fact that they have Seeger at short and several very good players – Hernandez and Muncy among them – playing second.
My hope is it burns them. I’d love to see them lose because their pen implodes.
The game is getting younger. Fast. That, plus the new situation (no August waiver deals) impacted the deadline. (Along those lines, the Giants are fast tracking Bart, Ramos and Hjelle. Barring injury, I bet at least two of the three are with the big club by July next year).
I think Farhan did a terrific job. The Pomerantz deal still amazes me. They got a potentially solid middle infielder for him. As does dumping Melancon’s salary and still getting warm bodies in return. Not to mention three minor leaguers, one who is close to major league ready, for Dyson
He will have the option of making qualifying offers to Bum and or Smith. And given the run they were making (real or not) it would’ve been disastrous from a public relations standpoint to trade either of them. It is, after all, a business.

Good for him. How can one not like Joe Panik. They don’t win it in 2014 without him. Class act from all I’ve seen. I bet he hits better with the Mets. Better hitters park. And a better lineup.
