If one wants to look for a silver lining, these cancellations may reinforce in some people's mind the idea that quarantine after being a "close contact" of a positive case is a real requirement, not a suggestion. Many jurisdictions are not even really trying to get people to do this any more. They are jusr warning them that they have been exposed and that they should be vigilant, whatever that means. If there are high profile examples of athletes doing the "right thing", even when it is very inconvenient to them personally, perhaps more people will start to cooperate.

I agree, but instead, what you see on Twitter is people frustrated over what seems to be draconian limitations by the city of Berkeley.

The problem with this is that none of these athletes get sick - if there is any reporting on it, it's usually along lines of "He is asymptomatic," or "he is showing some mild symptoms." And so the reaction of John Q. Public is "they sure are taking a lot of precautions for very little harm." And before you say "Yeah, but if they didn't, all older people would drop like flies," maybe. But do you ever hear about that? It's impossible to report on with any certainty, of course, but I'm still surprised we haven't seen much along those lines given agenda of much of MSM leading up to the election. Was the El Paso strain on hospitals due to the kids being back at UTEP or the team playing football? If so, I haven't seen that connection (or attempt at it). Perhaps because given demographic of the community, that is a less-likely causal factor.

I guess from my point of view, the message to be heard from athletes being quarantined (like Mills, who is not (yet) positive) is that it doesn't matter that it is inconvenient, and that while they may actually never test positive, they are doing what they need to do in order to contain the disease. It isn't for their grandparents, it is for the whole society. If essentially everybody behaved that we would be in a much better situation. Sometimes a few have to be inconvenienced for the good of many. That concept seems not to play in "modern" America. It needs to.

Utah at UCLA was moved from Friday to Saturday, most likely to help Utah get more players back.
New Mexico, which has its first game cancelled and was required to play its home game with SJS in San Jose, has moved its team to Las Vegas and will play this week’s home game with Nevada there.
Meanwhile, Cal has gone silent on its communications with the City of Berkeley about getting permission to play at ASU this week.

Berkeley Public Health is telling Cal that nothing has changed on their end...the Pac-12 operations head is saying that they're proceeding under the assumption that all six games will be played this weekend since the league hasn't heard anything.
There isn't a common goal here, and I'm not sure things end up working out unless the state of California gets involved, imo. (Or maybe the Cal AD leans hard on some local heavyweight power brokers.)

To be honest, I am not that worried about COVID impacting Stanford football since there is not that much at stake now. I am more worried about that one or more of Stanford's eight teams defending NCAA team titles could be forced to forfeit during their tournaments or the tournaments are cancelled. Ultimately getting us to a place where the NCAA team title streak ends.

Really sucks if true. I would hope this doesn’t extend to Sat. And the PAC-12 SHOULD have a policy. (I mean how tough is it - if you retest X number of times and they all come up negative....) But even if the PAC-12 did have a policy it wouldn’t matter. Not in SCC. Too bad Stanford isn’t in Menlo Park.

I don't think that is correct, because I think Mills was held out because he was a close contact with someone, not because he tested positive. Now, it is possible that his close contact was a false positive test.

Thankfully for my sports viewing pleasure, the powers-that-be in most conferences disagree with you . . . for now. Wonder how many Ivy kids will transfer (I expect not many . . . but some might). The kids want to play; it's safe for them; it makes money for the schools; risk-benefit analysis. That could change if all the doomsday numbers around here pan out, especially if hospital treatment is jeopardized.
But I think we continue to stumble along until a vaccine it widely distributed.
Meanwhile, Profile of Coronavirus Decedent remains murkier than it needs to be. Maybe that's smart for behavioral purposes.
