Yep, they're all NFL assistants. You would think that would leverage some recruiting advantages.
Ulbrich is at the top of that list for a reason: absolutely infectious personality with a toughness reminiscent of Mike Vrabel. But he's also got great NFL experience as a player and a coach to go along with some time in the Pac 12. He's also a South Bay guy, born in San Jose and went to high school at Live Oak.
I'll never forget the season with the Niners when he was told after a few games that he'd be demoted from the starting lineup on defense. Rather than sulk (as multi-year starters often would), after this meeting he walked directly to the special teams coach and asked to be put on every special teams unit. The guy just wanted to play football and contribute wherever he could.
Will it happen? Nope. But it should.

Why be a Willingham hater? His departure was problematic but most departures are. 44-36 and the first Rose Bowl since Abner Doubleday invented the game.
Here's one reason. The Seattle Bowl vs Georgia Tech. Froze my butt off watching that beauty.
They lost a bowl game. Better than not being in one. Is everyone here going to hate Shaw for the last couple years or appreciate what he did? How about Walsh?
I forget what it was (running up the score maybe) but TW did something toward Stanford when he was at ND that really earned the enmity of Stanford fans.
Was it him that had his USB team run onto the field in the middle of senior introductions on the last game of the season?

Here's what it was: Last game of the 2003 season, in the Old Lady. Final score was 57-7. TW called for a fake punt in the third quarter, already up by a humongous margin.
Didn't bother me, because I had left long before and I heard it on the radio going north on 280.

Fangio supposedly top of the list to replace Demico Ryans if he gets an HC job. Not sure why Fangio would accept a college football DC job. He’s too highly respected in NFL.
I’m curious why folks think Roman would be a good choice. He’s been in NFL for 10 years now. No one has thought highly enough of him to offer an HC job. He’s had a nice offense - as long as he had Colin Kaepernick before teams figured him out and Lamar Jackson, who is a Unicorn.
Besides those still pining away for Harbaugh thinking he’s the closest thing to JH (which there is no reason to believe) I really don’t see why he’s an ”exciting “ possibility. Although, I do like his run first philosophy and the creativity he shows in the running game. But it’s dependent on a dynamic QB that is a tremendous runner.

Willingham didn’t call the punt pass. The punter was quoted saying that he was schooled that when a gunner wasn’t covered he automatically had to pass the ball. Willingham should have had Quinn fumble the next snap but he was clueless to stuff like that.

The fake punt by Notre Dame came late in the 4th quarter, with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game. Notre Dame was leading 57-7 at the time. Notre Dame was facing 4th and 17 at the 50 yard line. The ND punter threw a pass, which was complete. The play gained only 14 yards, so the ball was turned over on downs. Stanford fans expressed their displeasure with Willingham.

Nobody knows who'd be good or bad or else they'd be leading the committee. While Roman doesn't give me goosebumps, my openness to his candidacy is rooted in the fact that he's had relatively consistent success. Harbaugh loved him enough to make him his OC in the NFL despite not technically being that at Stanford.
He was fired from the Bills in 2016 after leading the NFL in rushing in 2015. Of course, this is the Tyrod Taylor era Bills and they still managed 8-8 in 2015. He's had great success in Baltimore, despite the fans not being incredibly taken to him. Almost seems like a third Harbaugh brother.
He's coached under both Harbaughs and Rex Ryan in case a hit-em-in-the-teeth philosophy was in doubt.
More than anything, if you're looking for contrarian realize that he was the architect of the jumbo and super jumbo running packages. Harbaugh originally used more of a pro-style offense and Roman is the one responsible for what we now think of as that era's offensive signature rushing attack.
Personality-wise, it's hard to think he'd capture imaginations. But that isn't always required...Shaw came off as either cool or bland and recruited pretty well.
One thing that I think is interesting is that he's had some flirtations with HC positions before (including Stanford), but hasn't gotten a job. So he could be significantly hungrier for the opportunity than your typical 59 year old hire.
I still want Ulbrich.

Personally, I think major college football coaching is such a unique profession, apart from the NFL these days, that it only makes sense to hire a successful contemporary college head coach or coordinator from a very high level program.
Greg Roman has been out of the college game for way too long. Anyone who wasn't a college head coach or coordinator this season shouldn't be considered, IMO.

How long was Pete Carroll away from college when he was hired to be SC’a coach? I think he had been coaching at Pacific in 1983 and then the NFL until he was hired at SC in 2001.

Stanford had blocked ND's previous punt. To this day I don't know if TW instructed his punter to fake the next one, or if the punter was just doing what he had been instructed when seeing a certain sort of pressure coming off the edge.

From what I have read here and elsewhere Roman is someone who I would have on a short list, along with Taylor and Aranda. I assume he understands what is required of a Power 5 HC and would walk away if he was not prepared to take it on. His running game acumen speaks for itself. He knows Stanford. His NFL connections are a plus. Here is an article that offers some helpful data and history:

Seems to me Stanford could do a lot worse than hiring Roman.

Greg Roman has spent 27 years in the NFL. He has spent 2 years in college football. He has never been a head coach. He has almost no experience recruiting. To me, these are not strong qualifications for the Stanford job.

Just had to state: [Very much enjoying the posts of OutsiderFan & BostonCard]:
Coach JimHarbaugh turned around StanfordFootball on all fronts [W-L, Getting to the Jan1 BCS OrangeBowl, Recruiting, etc], so lets look at a few of his characteristics , and see if any of the coaches being bandied about match those characteristics:
Not that this is the entire story, but:
(1). Played in the NFL
(2). Starred at a Major BigTime College Program [Michigan]
(3). Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind [EUTM]
(4). Charismatic
(5). Stated Slogan/Mission for Stanford Football was something like 'We will reclaim our rightful place atop CollegeFootball & Bow to no other program !'
[All these things make you a magnet for Blue Chip High School Recruits ...and a big part of success at CollegeFootball is Recruiting]
Do any of the names being bandied about, meet these 5 criteria ?
(Yes, I realize some College Football Coaches have had success without the above 5 characteristics, but were they able to take a 2win program to a BCS level; for example CoachShaw won a lot of games, but he didn't have to as a HeadCoach, Turn around a 2 win program into a 10 or 11 win program ...as CoachHarbaugh did).

Ever hear the phrase about catching lightning in a bottle twice? That’s what your approach sounds like. You’re making it seem like a certain resume/template (of which you left off BY FAR the most important part of Harbaugh’s, which was being a proven dominant head coach) can predict quality, rather than the more ineffable greatness that makes Harbaugh Harbaugh. Your post would point Stanford to Trent Dilfer. There are many coaches and many criteria for picking coaches that make a lot more sense than what you’re proposing.

I think the most important qualities for a Stanford head coach are:
1) Imaginative, creative, big thinking. Figuring out contrarian strategies, figuring out how to turn Stanford's unique qualities from barriers to success into reasons for success, inventing new ways to deal with NIL and transfers that work for this program, etc.
2) Charisma of one sort or another--recruiting and motivating players and assistants is becoming more important and not less.
3) Administrative acumen, the ability to pick excellent subordinates, the ability to negotiate from strength with Stanford administration. The job of being a head football coach is in this complex modern era goes far beyond X's and O's. I almost don't want a head coach distracted by that level of football detail. I do want a head coach who attracts, mentors, and empowers the best assistants in the business who do have an eye for detail.
In other words, I think we need a CEO of Stanford football. This would suggest a proven record at one level or another of managing a team of assistants, with a track record of recruiting and dealing successfully with administration. And of course a record of success. I'd rather have someone who has been winning at a lower level while practicing the management skills I outlined, than a brilliant coordinator from a higher level who lacks that sort of experience.
Now, I have not been following in detail the characteristics of the various names that are being floated. Which of them seems to fit my bill?

Let's be honest and admit that Stanford is hands-down problematic for the best of the best coaches. For reasons we all know too well. Nowhere near the fan pressure as the bluebloods but the new territory is utterly alien to everything that Stanford has always identified with. The street-wisest, football-guru, shrewdest candidates know this. This is fraught. Making things worse? Bernard Muir. No big-time hiring chops whatsoever. No football gene. As brilliant as he may be in some things, he strikes me as a wandering stranger in a strange land right now. Like a chiropractor checking a dental encyclopedia as he's doing your root canal. Just my opinion, of course. No better than anyone else's. But I still don't envision a stampede of studs itching to sign up for this gig. Four or five years ago, maybe. And even then it woulda been tough. Admit it.
