Great game. Nija did not look happy at the end. She was throwing a screwball to the last, or next to last, batter and hit the inside of her left knee after brushing her right thigh (I think). She did not celebrate the win at all and was obviously in pain. How fast would that be at release?

Canady’s pitching seemed off the entire 6th inning (pitches 77-97 or so).  She was gassed.

How unusual is it for a player to pitch two complete games on consecutive days?  I know the games are shorter than baseball games, but does a softball pitcher suffer less wear and tear than a baseball pitcher given the same number of pitches?

Underhand produces less stress on the arm by a fairly large margin.

It's not uncommon for softball teams to stick with 1 pitcher through the whole WCWS.  In 2007, when the University of Arizona softball team won the NCAA tournament (from the losers bracket), Taryne Mowatt threw every single inning of 8 different games (one of which went 10 innings).  A total of 1,037 pitches over 7 days.

That said, I presume Canady relies more on her fastball than Mowatt did. Canady is close to breaking the record for fastest pitch ever in the WCWS and she's only a sophomore.

It’s a nefarious right wing effort to diminish the Left Coast.  (Apologies, my first thought was that it was an anti PAC. 12 bias)  actually, they have been doing this for a while, at least since last year. Thinking is , we are trying to find the best four teams for the final four and guarding against the possibility that , despite the seedlings, one side of the brackets is  stacked with all the best teams.

They flip the losers of the 1-0 games to the different brackets. Also, as perhaps an indication of, despite having a chance to win Thursday's game, how the result was a relatively strong performance to hold the Texas offense to small ball and singles, Texas has 5 in the first inning already against Florida.

Stanford and UCLA will play tomorrow at 4:00pm PT on ESPN2 for a berth in the national semifinals against what looks like Texas (game is already 5-0 T2 and Florida pulled their ace already after only recording a single out; their #2 is markedly worse).

They say it's hard to beat a team three times in a row.  So, it must be really hard to get beat by the same team four times in a row.  That's hope.

Stanford and UCLA pushed back to 6:15pm PT (apparently because of bad weather in OKC). The winner gets Texas in the national semifinal, who finished off a 10-0 run rule of Florida in 4 1/2 innings.

NiJaree is pitching and off to a great start! Gets 2 strikeouts of UCLA's two best hitters, and finishes off a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. Cardinal bats coming to plate.

Top of the seventh, two outs, two strikes on the batter. Umpire decides that the batter was hit by a pitch. Watching slow motion replays for I don’t know how many times it looks to me like it hit the bat.
