That's not whining, them's the facts!  How else can one explain what is clearly the best team not winning??
(or at very least, they're alternative facts)

Good point. I completely forgot how our '83 mens hoops team led by Keith Jones and Jon Revelli got totally jobbed by the refs at Maples against UNC with Jordan, Perkins, and Kenny Smith. We lost by 13, and the bad calls were the only explanation of how that one ended.

I'd agree if it was some reduced event, like playing 3 holes or something like that. But each of these players had up to 18 holes to get it done. Stanford just didn't play well enough, and they know it. Nothing unfair/happinstance about it. If they play 10 times, Stanford probably wins 9. It was a big upset - that's what happens when you don't play well enough.

I also have to say - been around this board for quite some time. There is (IMO) a lot of after the fact whining when things don't go our way. It's a bad format, a bad draw, the refs, the schedule, the travel, etc. etc. Really all that happened here is that we got beat, fair and square.

Boy, it's hard to make a joke around here without people getting really upset... or making inaccurate assumptions that folks are whining, etc.

Of course we got beat fair and square.  Indeed, this was foreshadowed when we got beat in the ACC tournament match play.  And, obviously, Northwestern was no Harvard women's basketball team; they have some very good players.  I hope this outcome helps our team develop that killer instinct necessary to make match play less of a crap shoot next deason.

Still, when you have a championship set-up where the best team over four rounds of team golf [sometimes best by a very wide margin] ends up NOT being the champion many more times than it IS the champion due to the fact that the champion is determined by three rounds of an entirely different format than is played for the remaining ~80% the season's competitions, it strikes me as a legitimate object of criticism.

If the champion is going to be determined by match play, fine.  Make the WHOLE tournament match play.  Or maybe do four-ball...or alternate shot.  They're all long-recognized forms of golf competition.  And make the entire golf season match play.  [SPOILER ALERT:  Those are all joke suggestions; no need to point out that doing so would be a logistical nightmare...]

The match play format was introduced primarily [if not entirely] for the benefit of television coverage.  Sigh... Everything TV touches...

Also, if you don't like my free throw shooting contest analogy, I'm not a big fan of soccer championships being decided by penalty kicks, either, but realize that, without using something like that, some soccer matches might never end.  That's not true for golf.
Every sport has to have a way to decide close games.  Football gets us overtime, as does Basketball, Baseball and Softball continues on until one team wins. Soccer has penalty kicks, NCAA golf has Match Play.  Most sports do not have two riveting formats, but Golf does. I would believe that most serious golfers who have played both formats would tell you that the pressure and approach to the two formats are much different.  Match play being the format with the most pressure.  So if you want to determine who is best, play both formats and winner wins. Here is an interesting take on the best Match Play golfers of all time:

From my limited view point

After 4 rounds of stroke play, it wasn't close.  Stanford blew away the other teams.

Good strategy.  When you realize you've made a particularly weak point, say it was a joke.

The walk on status seems likely.  I can't believe we couldn't have found a better player or two if we were offering scholarships, but strange things happen. There is also the strength of our lineup.  Anyone coming in on scholarship would probably want a chance to play, but cracking the top 5 next year will be very hard. We could also cache a player or two at some other school and portal them in down the line, such an approach is most likely very unethical but I am sure there are places that would think like that. The new system makes all kinds of nefarious approaches seem rational.

Women's golf can carry 6.5 scholarships.  With Sturdza's graduation, we have seven elite-level players in. this fall's class--the five current starters plus Sundberg and Chien.

And Nikki Oh and Jude Lee, the second and third highest ranked American players in the 2026 entering class, arrive next fall--essentially replaciing Ganne and Xu.

Coach Walker appears to favor large teams.  The 2021 team, a vivid example, comprised ten players. Only seven ever played, one of them, Calista Reyes, a Rolex Junior All American.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 06-15-2025

Paula Martin Sampedro just won the British Women's Amateur by winning 2 and 1 over World #8 Farah O'Keefe of U Texas.

Paula had nine birdies and just one bogey over the 35 holes.

This will move Paula up to #9 in the world.  And slide Megha Ganne back a spot to #11.

Took a bit of a pause with the 2025 Class (presumably to ensure all these top young golfers some playing time), but according to this site, Stanford Women's Golf has commitments from 2 of the top 4 ranked golfers in the Class of 2026:  Class of 2026 Girls Individual Rankings

Doesn't matter how high we are ranked or how great our team plays all season.  Match play for the NC will allow any team to win. </rant>
