Giants #1-#4 hitters combine for 0 for 14. Home runs by Pillar and Longoria provide the scoring. Slater had one walk in three trips.
Giants 3.5 back of the last wild card slot.

If they have anything left in the tank it pretty much has to start today. 3 of the 4 teams ahead of them (Mil, Mets, AZ) have already lost, and they play the 4th. And Cincy lost and SD is behind in the 7th.
So a rare chance to gain a game on the 6 teams closest to them in the wild card race.
OTOH they start another of their AAA pitchers today.

Watching the ‘89 ceremony. Chokes me up seeing those guys. I still remember Hank’s call: “And 27 years of waiting is over!” (Or something like that’) Especially Krukow with his physical difficulty and Roger Craig. The Old Humm Baby. How different the game was when he managed it. I can’t remember seeing a pitch out once this year. Back then Craig would pitch out sometimes on back to back pitches. Hit-and-run squeeze a very fun style of baseball. I miss the running game.
Roger Craig I think is the most underrated of the Giant managers. It was also tremendous to see Dusty. A very very good manager and from everything I’ve ever read an even better man.

Pillar had his team-leading 60th RBI today, Gennett had a double and another home run and Yaz the Younger had a home run. Longoria had three hits, Pillar Gennett and YtY had two hits. Pillar's triple knocked in the seventh run. Slight down note, Slater was 0 for three with three K's.
Watson came in in the seventh to load the bases and get the last out. Giants pitchers gave up ten walks. Will Smith, in his first major league plate appearance, singled to knock in two runs to make it 9-6, which was the final score.
BTW, A-Rod, who I'm really starting to enjoy, says AT&T Park is the most enjoyable, all-around experience in baseball. Matt Vasgersian disagreed, slightly, but they also both admired the culture of the franchise. They liked the fact that the Giants celebrate and retain the old-timers, including today's 30th celebration of the 1989 team.
And I remember Hank's call like it was yesterday: "And twenty-seven years of waiting have come to an end!" I was born two weeks after McCovey hit a liner into Richardson's glove, so it was the first Giants pennant I ever saw. And first Earthquake World Series, too...

Will Smith’s first career plate appearance and subsequent 2 RBI hit was a delight to behold. Can’t believe the Giants won a game they gave up ELEVEN walks and 10 hits!

Well, it is great that they won. Looking ahead, it is worth noting that in the years since there were two wild cards (2012), the worst wild card record was 87 wins. If one uses that as a benchmark, the required number of wins for the Giants in their remaining 43 games would be 28. That requires the Giants to play .651 baseball, if history is a guide. However, the current wild card #2 is winning at an overall .526 clip, indicating that maybe 85 games will be enough this year. That requires "only" .600 baseball from here on out. Can they do it? They could if they didn't have three AAA starters. If Bum and Shark win all their starts (not a sure thing, needless to say, but assume that happens), that would be about 17 wins. That leaves 9 more wins to get somewhere, in 26 games. The AAA starters would have to win .346 to do it. So far, they haven't shown the ability to do so. If Cueto can come back "soon", maybe possible, otherwise, thanks for trying IMHO.

I wonder how many times in SF history they hav3 given up double digit hits and walks and won. Darn few, I suspect. That was a fun but funky game.

I don’t particularly care about the postseason. The stretch from the beginning of July however is one of the most fun times ever. Probably because of the horrid first half and all the doom and gloom. And I have witnessed them all since watching Reuben Gomez shutout the Dodgers in the first West Coast game in 1958.
You are making me feel old Mick as I was an assistant cameraman loading 35mm mags and pulling focus during the ‘62 Series. Bobbbbb was cutting school and climbing through the secret hole in the RF bleachers fence to get in.

Giants now 3.5 back of wild card. In next two weeks, the Giants play A's four times, the Diamondbacks four times and the Cubs three times.

3-2 win over the A's. Bum was dealing. 9 K's, 7 innings, 2 hits, no walks. Slater looked pretty good, 1 for 3, stroked another ball. Giants still 3.5 back of wild card.

Fangraphs is projecting 85 wins for 2nd Wild Card spot. The Giants would need to go 25-17 (.595) the rest of the way to make it.
The complicating matter, and again, why the Giants have such small odds is that they play the hardest remaining schedule of all the contenders. The teams remaining have a combined .539 win percentage. Next hardest is the Brewers at .516 remaining schedule strength.
Of course, if you look at it another way, the Giants have a lot of opportunities to pass other contenders with head-to-head games. The Giants play their next 12 against Wild Card contending teams. If they can manage to go at least 6-6 and are no worse than 66-66 by Aug. 27, they will play meaningful games in September, with Johnny Cueto likely joining the rotation for a stretch run.

I mostly agree. It all comes down to what they can get from the bottom three in the rotation. If nobody can really step up in that group, it is pretty much impossible for them to win enough games and reach 85 wins. They don't need to be great, but they can't be anything near as bad as they have been recently. Cueto can be the one who provides the boost they need. If not him, they really need an unexpected contribution from some starting pitcher.

Don't sleep on 22 yo Logan Webb who has returned from 80 game PED suspension and is killing it this season otherwise. It's possible he gets called up after the other day after having a nice outing for Sac. He might be better than Menez, Anderson, and Beede.

It will be a big jump after only one AAA start. That said, it just might make sense. Anderson really hasn't helped much, and Menez clearly wasn't ready yet. Beede shows competence about every third game. Just when you think he has totally fallen apart, he will have a decent (not great) start. Webb can't have a worse winning percentage than Menez. The Giants don't need stars in the back three (although it would be nice), but they can't reliably lose three out of every five and catch anybody.

The math here is compelling, thanks. It’s really scary to think that if Bum and Shark win out, we still need at least 9 wins from the AAA guys. We should not assume Cueto comes back in peak form. If he can win 2 games in Sept that only leaves us looking for 7 more. But still a big hill to climb.
And please let’s not get misled by “3.5 games back.” They are FIVE games back in the loss column. 6-6 in the next two weeks gets them nowhere.

Giants are now 4.5 games and 5 teams out of the wildcard, but hey, the A's are now only 2 games back from the AL WC.
