Ugh, noon, so 100+F?

Hope we've got some tech to battle that heat.

Short turnaround. But I prefer day games because we have some home run power. Maybe that is too much of a Sunken Diamond mindset, though. In many places, the wind blows more during the day and M T reports that the wind in Lubbock blows in, not out.

I don't like the timing.
Was hoping for a Saturday start (you noted the short turnaround).
Don't like the idea of playing at noon Pacific, don't like the idea of playing in Lubbock Texas at 2:00 in the afternoon on a day forecast to have a high of 105 F. (Saturday forecast high 98 with increasing humidity, Sunday only 94) (seems the forecast is getting worse than when MT posted, though it could be which site we are looking at).
All three games are set for 2 pm Central.

I do think that Stanford's pitching situation means it is easier to win 2 of 3 in a weekend rather than 3 of 4 or 5. Of course Texas Tech is a better team than past opponents - and went 24-5 at home this year.

Trying to learn something about Tech.

They went 1-2 in the Big 12 tournament, dropping back to back 2-7 games to TCU and Kansas State.
They had no troubles in their regional, going 3-0 with scores of 6-3, 7-2, 8-2.

Hit for power but not super average - kind of like Stanford but moreso.
Were 6 of 9 in Big 12 in BA, but #1 in SLG (0.499). Led the Big 12 and #8 in the country in home runs.
Team ERA of 4.12, 3rd in Big 12.

Their web site seems to list about 100 pitchers. It looks like their usual Friday starter is Patrick Monteverde (15 starts, 7-3, WHIP 1.14, ERA 3.59).
Then it seems a little unsettled. Their other two starters in the regional were Mason Montgomery (13 starts, 5-3, WHIP 1.18, ERA 3.82) and Chase Hampton (6 starts, 4-0, WHIP 1.13, ERA 3.32). Micah Dallas has also pitched a lot for them (10 starts, 4-3, WHIP 1.17, ERA 3.32).
They also have a guy named Brandon Beck...el.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 06-08-2021

All three games if third needed are at noon our time

RE: Stanford Baseball - OutsiderFan - 06-08-2021

Don't the Pac-12 Arizona schools schedule their games at night to avoid the heat?  Why not Texas Tech?

And, if any Stanford coach should be complaining about a game time, it should be Esquer, IMO. Playing in the middle of the day with temps to reach 105, is just plain reckless.  It's not just the players on the field, but the fans being asked to sit in the stands. It's literally dangerous.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 06-08-2021

The Arizona game is at 6 the latest game
It’ll be hot for them also
TV rules. Duh

RE: Stanford Baseball - M T - 06-08-2021

Friday's game will probably see several homers to left field.  Saturday & Sunday any homers would likely be to right field.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Papa John - 06-08-2021

UCI is a *really* good team, and Stanford beat them 5 out of 7 times this season. I have no idea how good Texas Tech is, but I know how resilient this Stanford team is.

From the photos online, it looks like Dan Law Field is artificial turf. Not sure if Stanford has played on such a surface this year?

As for the weather: it's going to be uncomfortably hot for both teams, but it would be much worse if they had to wear shoulder pads and football helmets. Having said that, the most relevant measure is heat index. My sister lives in Corpus Christi, and the forecast for today's high is 87, but it will "feel like" 101. Today's high in Lubbock is 101, and that's precisely what it will feel like.

I wonder if the NCAA has upper limits on acceptable heat index for baseball? According to weather.gov, 103-124 is dangerous, while 90-103 requires extreme caution.

Oman might have more to say about the weather factor.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Blue Hawk (Mizzou) Card - 06-08-2021

Iirc, Oregon has an all turf field. Maybe some midweek games? Seems like maybe USF, but the geezer's memory no longer holds that much info so I can't recall that field, except that I remember houses really close behind the right field fence, which necessitated a high screen.

All turf fields are becoming quite common for Northern schools that play baseball. At my NAIA school, we have a turf infield and grass outfield, which is becoming common at our level. It's a bit surprising that a Texas team would have all turf. But Lubbock is not Houston, so it probably has a somewhat late start to the grass growing season.

Biggest difference with all turf is the speed on the infield. But today's players have experience with it.

Isn't Lubbock the home of the College Baseball Hall of Fame? Any Stanfordites in that Hall?

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 06-08-2021

Marquess being inducted or was into the Hall of Fame

RE: Stanford Baseball - terry - 06-08-2021

Texas Tech is tough to beat at home, with a home record of 24-5.

Away from home (road + neutral), Texas Tech's record is 15-10.

Turf fields Stanford played on this season include: USF, WSU, Oregon.
I am fairly sure none of those games were played in 105 degree temperatures.

Simply watching the tournament, it seems that turf fields are becoming common most everywhere outside the west - including University of Houston (reflecting on your example). I find it particularly aesthetically unpleasing when they don't even have dirt, just brown carpet.

RE: Stanford Baseball - magnus - 06-08-2021

How do today's turf fields compare to the turf fields from 30 years ago which would always be 10-20 degrees hotter than the air temperature?

Why do we keep getting stuck in 90+ degree Super Regionals?

RE: Stanford Baseball - Papa John - 06-08-2021

So does modern turf amplify the heat? Attenuate it? No effect?

In other words, might the air temperature on TT's baseball field be different than at, say, a nearby park with real grass?

RE: Stanford Baseball - TrumpCard - 06-08-2021

Plastic gets far hotter than grass in the heat. That’s a downside for artificial turf lawns, and presumably baseball fields too.

What compounds the heat increase of artificial playing surfaces beyond beyond artificial lawns is the used of small black balls (recycle tires) which added to playing surfaces to provided cushioning, this is very common on football fields, not sure if cushioning for other ball fields uses these approach or some other means to provided cushioning.  The number/type of artificial-athletic turf surfaces are quite numerous.

Does the other team have to play in that heat on that field or just us?
FYI, you don’t get used to 105 in the sun. If that’s real, everyone Will suffer.

(06-08-2021, 02:09 PM)magnus Wrote:  Why do we keep getting stuck in 90+ degree Super Regionals?

Mostly because southern teams dominate the seedings.

This year's top 8 were from: Arkansas, Texasx3, Tennesseex2, Arizona, Mississippi.
All have lovely weather in June.

The only top 8 seed not to win a regional was TCU. Dallas Baptist won that one (a 3 seed) with 3 seed UVa winning the opposite regional. Now neither gets to host the super regional, as that will be in Columbia, South Carolina.

Friday Forecast for the 8 super regional sites.
Fayetteville, AR - 88 F, 72% humidity
Austin, TX - 94 F, 63% humidity
Knoxville, TN - 81 F, 85% humidity, thunderstorms
Nashville, TN - 85 F, 76% humidity, thunderstorms
Tuscon, AC- 105 F, 8% humidity (110 on Sunday)
Columbia, SC - 85 F, 71% humidity, thunderstorms
Starkville, MS - 84 F, 84% humidity, thunderstorms
Lubbock, TX - 107 F, 25% humidity

At least for Friday, several sites are forecast to be below 90, but make up for it with humidity and thunderstorms.
[Lubbock forecast high keeps going up.]

RE: Stanford Baseball - OutsiderFan - 06-08-2021

I know CTCard knows Dew Point is all that matters. It will be in the 40s and 50s in Lubbock over the weekend.

If the games start at 11am CST, I see 92 for Friday forecast then, but Dew Point only 53.  By 2pm 102, but Dew Point only 45. The other days will be a little less stifling.

It will be hot, but not oppressive as I initially assumed, given the low Dew Points.

(I thought both coaches took a pitcher out while he still was pitching OK. That must be my lack of understanding of what  is going on.)

Btw, ESPN's stats page for the game is at

I was at that game last night, and not sure what they were saying on TV but they were leaning into those pitches!
