Do or die time in MLB. If no agreement by Monday, opening day will be delayed. Anyone want to bet on whether they will get it done? (Narrator: they will not)
Leave it to MLB to cut its nose off to spite its face.

One thing I've learned from the pandemic, is that I don't need professional sports. My interest and viewership has dropped significantly, same for college sports. The constant chase for dollars makes it less interesting, as well.

I’ve spent my career getting into sports events and other venues for free. I did buy Stanford season tix for years. I have DISH so I actually pay a bit for TV sports as part of my package. My way to protest is to never buy a ticket again. There is so much else to do with my time.
If you don’t like what’s going on just stop supporting the bastards and don’t pay to see a professional event.

1. Even though they've traded multiple first round selections, they're quietly stockpiling picks. They have nine picks this year and eight picks next year, and that's
before they trade the NFL's #9 ranked QB.* They lack a first round selection, but have one each in rounds two through six, and three seventh round selections. Garoppolo will bring (my guess) a fourth round selection this year and a third rounder next year. That's assuming no other players are involved in the trade. And if the Niners lose more coaches and/or more players, they'll pick up more picks:

QB ratings are misleading. Off the top of my head and in no particular order
Rodgers
Stafford
Murray
Wilson
Prescott
Cousins (close)
Carr
Mahomes
Allen
Burrows
Jackson
Ryan
Herbert
Tannehill
That doesn’t take into account the young QB’s. like Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Jones, Tua.

Not sure who said Baseball ownership is a poor investment. Professional Sports franchises are incredibly valuable.
This whole thing is about leverage. In the end, the owners have a big advantage.

Think about that for a second - the Commissioner of a sport saying his product is a bad investment. I realize it’s pure bullish-t. But still. No one believes anything that clown utters anyway. Worst Commissioner since Bowie Kuhn.
As an example, Johnson et al bought the Giants in ‘93 for 100 Million. Obviously building* the park was a major expenditure. But still - today they are valued at 3.1 Billion. According to one source, Giants were worth 335 Million in 2002. Pretty decent jump in 20 years. By contrast, I used a historical stock calculator. 335 million in ‘02 invested in market brings 1.6 Billion.

There is no shortage of bidders whenever a franchise comes up for sale or when there's been expansion. In fact, sale prices have consistently exceeded the Forbes estimates.
It's just insulting to our intelligence for Manfred to continue to insist that owners are suffering and that a baseball franchise is a poor investment.

The owners are 90%+ at fault. They're a despicable, particularly money-hungry bunch.
If MLB went down in flames and the owners all lost their shirts, I'd be perfectly happy. The downside is all the collateral damage - players and workers employed in all industries associated with spring training through the World Series. That's a lot of damage.
BTW, I heard a commentator on sports radio the other night theorize that Analytics has teams watching things to the fifteenth decimal and that mindset has spilled over into CBA negotiations. It's like teams bring in a series of no-names because "the numbers demand it," and who cares if the fans ever identify with or get to know and support the revolving door of jersey-wearers. The point generally being that MLB owners are penny-mise and pound foolish.
All I know is the game is losing fans and in important demographics (which is not mine). But they've lost me, too.

It's a great game to watch and a great game to play. When it comes back however it will mean a little less to me. I'd like to see a Pat Tillman emerge and publicly flip off the baseball oligarchs and take up arms in the Ukraine.
The lemming fans will come back and buy tickets. Shame on them.

No question analytics play a role. Teams can bring in a young player at the minimum instead of resigning or signing a veteran at a higher salary. Cause there will only be a small difference in WAR. If any. So players don’t get rewarded as they did in the past.
