Who the f$$$ is Colin Cowherd and how many snaps has he taken in a game, Pop Warner, HS, college?
Is he an ESPN nerd announcer who if ever hit hard would break into bits? It's no fun to be hit by a charging beast who has just beaten your LT. Good way to see stars and then focus on baseball. I'd rather listen to Aikman, Young and Warner then an ESPN pretender.
I was against the trade the day it happened and posted here often.
A ton of players are going down all over the NFL. Stafford could be next.

From the day it happened I thought the Lance trade was the right move to make for Niners. I still do. But the team totally botched Lance's development. OK to sit him during rookie year, but to have him #1 in OTAs and all through training camp, then use him in a high risk way that threw away the season for him, was malpractice. Does anyone think Shanahan would have called so many runs for Lance if Sudfeld was the backup?
The same people who were raving about signing Garoppolo as a backup to Lance should be pointing out the vulnerability of having Purdy as a backup now, but I haven't heard it. Of course, given the way the world works, we'll certainly hear this from the reactionaries if Garoppolo does go down.
As for Garoppolo, he does win. He does put up pretty good stats relative to the NFL. The problem is he has proven he's just not as good as he must be to win the biggest of games throwing the ball when absolutely needed in playoffs. To me, the most important game on the schedule for the Niners this year is Week 7 when they host the Chiefs (a game I happen to be attending as luck would have it). If Garoppolo, backed by a great Niners defense, can come out on top vs. Mahomes, I'll be more sanguine about Garoppolo having potential to be a Super Bowl winning QB.
But what are the odds Garoppolo even starts and it isn't Purdy in that game? We all know the injury history and now the Niners are playing with #3 LT.

Trey Lance was selected in part for his ability to run. If they were not going to tap into that, they could have stayed at 12 (or maybe gave up less to move up a couple spots) and picked Jones. Who, btw, is hurt. Another “high risk” play no doubt.
“High risk” plays occur constantly. It’s football. QBs that are good runners add a ton to a defenses problems. So, it was neither surprising nor “wrong” that Shanahan had some designed runs. Unfortunately, Lance got hurt. It happens.
As for pointing to the vulnerability if JG goes down; everyone knows that. But tell us - who is out there they should pick up? There is a dearth of quality QBs at first and second team level. Not as if there is a big selection out there. Bottom line - if you are left with your 3d string QB starting over an extended period you are in deep trouble. (Maybe they could coax Ryan Fitzpatrick out of retirement…..)

In a suit and tie Steve Young looked good tossing balls to Rice and Jefferson Monday night. Maybe OF would take him.

37-15 win today, fourth largest margin in NFL games today, the other three being in the AFC (Bills, Patriots, Jets). Garoppolo 109.4 rating, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 18/30, 253 yards. The game manager's season passer rating is now 97.8, 7th in the NFL.
Niners suffered a lot of injuries today on Carolina's artificial turf field. Moseley now out for the year. Bosa with groin injury. Next week, another artificial turf field in Atlanta.
Niners also 3-2. Seahawks, Cardinals and Rams all lost, and all are 2-3.
RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread -

The Niners' Defense is not #1 in the NFL without Armstead and Bosa playing. And that doesn't even address the Moseley injury. Most yards allowed all season when both were out more than half the game.
The OL did pretty well vs. Carolina. It's clear Jaylen Moore is a downgrade from Trent Williams, but he was not terrible. I found it most interesting that they had effectively a three Guard rotation, subbing Brunskill in for Burford and Banks throughout the game. Nobody asked Shanahan about why, so if anyone learns why, please post.
The Special Teams are not very tight. Allowed two blocked FGs this year (one ruined a shutout), and two 40+ yard KO returns that forced Gould to make tackles at Carolina.
It was nice to see Kittle get involved as a receiver, and liked the fact they got Jimmy out of the pocket on several occasions.
One note on Moseley. That injury - if it can be overcome by Niners with other guys - may end up being good for the team because it probably means they will re-sign him for less than he would have earned otherwise. Of course, it sucks for Moseley as he will lose a lot of money on the other side of that equation.
It's also clear Christian McCaffrey has not lost any ability due to his leg injuries. Still has the quickness, speed, and power that made him a Top 10 pick. Carolina probably now wishes they traded for Garoppolo. Might a Trey vs. Jimmy game have led to a different winner???

A Trey vs. Jimmy game might have led to a different winner, a Brock Purdy vs. Jimmy game might have been ugly.
The 49ers had a dismal special teams performance in 2021, ranking 26th overall of the 32 teams. They were very strong in 2017 when they had the fewest punt return yards, and in 2018 when Robbie G. led the NFL with 97.1% FG percentage. Their week 13 loss to the Seahawks was probably avoidable when 8th string WR Travis Benjamin fumbled a kcikoff, leading to Garoppolo being sacked for a safety and the Seahawks pulled off a 73 yard fake punt on their opening possession for a TD:
https://twitter.com/i/status/1467609538555617282
Their kickoff average was 21st, punt average was 13th, KO return against was 23rd, punt return was still strong at 2nd. 49er average start position was 24th, opponent average start position was 20th.
They fired Richard Hightower, who joined the Chicago Bears and brought in Brian Schneider former Seahawks special teams coordinator for 10 years and the Jaguars last year. In 2020, the Seahawk special teams were ranked #3 overall while the 49ers were ranked 23rd. And John Lynch hired special teams aces Ray Ray McCloud, George Odum and Oren Burks.
Currently, Niner special teams are ranked 28th out of 32 teams by footballoutsiders.com. They need to turn it around, and fast.

Inevitable. Under Ruhle Carolina was 1-27 when giving up 17 or more points.
He never had a QB. Newton was bad by the time Ruhle took over. Darnold wasn’t the answer. And putting your trust in Baker Mayfield is a fools errand. Below average skill set. Horrible intangibles.
Wish CMac could get out of there.

Everytime the Niners play on turf they sustain major injuries. Why does the Union allow the league to have stadiums with that crap.

Hey OF... an answer and a plug!
A couple of days ago Shanahan spoke highly of Brunskill and wanted him to get back to where he might be able to play a full game. Can't have enough O linemen. They are screwed if Moore gets hurt.
I've been impressed by the DL depth. OF called it in camp. Ridgeway has come out of nowhere. Kinlaw is an enigma however. I bet it's more than health.
Juice doesn't get enough credit. His blocking is incredible and once a game comes up with a big play.
One of Verette, Thomas and Womack needs to emerge. Coming into the game the corner pair were the best in the league.

Shanahan doesn’t need to trade for/or spend a premium (1 or 2) draft choice on an RB. He has had a lot of success with low round/free agent guys. The problem has keeping them healthy…….

He has. That doesn’t mean that someone like CMac wouldn’t significantly improve them. Think of him running option routes out of backfield, lining up in slot isolated on linebackers and hitting the edge on their stretch runs.
It would also alleviate the need for Deebo to play RB. (An injury waiting to happen) Not gonna happen, of course. But it’s something I’ve thought of many a time. Both for CMac and Niners.
Maybe they trade Lance for him….. (Kidding!).

One other factor to consider - his health (IMO, the biggest roadblock to any deal Carolina might propose to any team). He missed 23 of the last 33 games coming into this season due to injuries.

Mostly due to non-contact injuries. Wonder how the turf contributes to that.

The morning guys on KNBR were talking about that possibility this morning, allegedly he's being shopped. Think it was after the segment with Lynch. . . .
