I'm inclined to think that the criticism of our pre-season schedule is predicated on the belief that the Pac 12 is weak this year (and thus we especially need the preseason to build our resume.) The only other PAC 12 teams besides Stanford listed in the preseason top-25 are 19 Arizona and 20 Oregon.
Frankly, I don't think anyone has any genuine idea about the quality of these sorts of unstable musical-chair teams with gargantuan numbers of transfers in and out. The Pac 12 could have multiple sweet 16 teams or it might have only one. Come tournament time, these sorts of discussions are going to look silly. Teams "everyone" thinks will be spectacular now could be mediocre by then, and there will be teams not on the radar now that will excel. The field in WBB has become deeper in recent years, and the influence of the transfer rules will further scramble these sorts of calculations. We have moved from reading the tea leaves to consulting the ouija board.

We will see how this develops and the leaps made over the summer but if I were to have to compare Demetre vs. Emma-Nnopu I'd select Agnes because while Brooke has a smooth shot, she lacks the quickness. That was quite clear in the 3x3 this summer and hopefully a point of attack for Brooke.

I got bashed for daring to suggest our non-conference schedule was weak and now I'm joined by Charlie, who I never agree with. Strange. Some of my concern had to do with the prep leading up to the South Carolina game.
But here is where I think we are all in agreement. The non-conference allows Tara to try out different player combinations (as many of you have already suggested) and give our freshmen and others valuable playing time. I would not be surprised if we see significant minutes from our freshmen when we play the exhibition game against Vanguard, Pacific, Cal Poly and at least one of the games in the Hawaii Tourney. I personally can't wait to see Betts take the floor for the first time.
By Conference time (perhaps even earlier), we should be a well-oiled machine with a strong starting lineup and solid rotations. I have every confidence in the world we'll be rolling.

i don't think they play the same position. agnes is a 2. she's not a candidate for the 3 without an outside shot. brooke is a 3/4. she plays smart, position defense - much like haley. brooke will get more time at the 4 when fran and ashten graduate.

Our biggest challenge this year will be generating offense. Last year we had our big 3 and then two great defenders (Lacie and Wilson) who were very reluctant 3 point shooters. This year I think Jump will replace Lexie as one of our top 3 scorers / shot takers. But we need a more balanced offense with all 5 players looking to score. So Demetre needs to be more aggressive at taking her 3’s or mid-range jumpers when she is open and we really need Belibi slashing to the basket. Even if she misses, she’s a great rebounder of her own shot and you have Brink and Jones to offensive rebound as well. Aggressive Belibi is hard to stop because she is so strong, she gets in trouble when she hesitates and is buried in the post and the opposing post defender can anticipate and block her shot.

Our recently added home game with CSUN on Nov. 8, the evening after we host San Diego State will give us more opportunities to look at new players and new combinations before we hit the road at Pacific and Portland.
I see Tara pulling the starters by the 3rd. quarter (perhaps with the exception of Haley), against San Diego State since there are back to back games.
Would love to see Haley and Nivar or Haley and Harriel in the backcourt at the same time. Same goes for Cam playing with Kiki.
Many interesting things ahead.

Having those weak teams early in the season is also a way for Tara to get our non starters some quality basketball minutes. Later in league and tournament play those players not in the regular rotation can recede to become the practice squad, but early season they get to play, get a chance to impress, and get a chance to be cheered on by the starters. I like it when we are dominant enough to give everyone a chance to play.

The lack of any inside info is killing me here. The Vanugard exhibition is only a week away and nothing yet about how the frosh look, which sophs have made the big second-year leap, what our starting lineup appears to be, etc. Anyone?

Many have suggested a starting lineup of: Cam, Fran, Brooke, Hannah and Haley. That's a good lineup that would win many games, but I'm not sure that lineup defeats South Carolina on Nov. 20th nor wins the National Championship.
Yes, I realize it's not always who starts, but who plays the most minutes. But for just for conversation sake, I believe we need more size in the post which is why I would favor Kiki or Ashten with Fran providing quality minutes off the bench, which is what she has given us in many games.
There's still the possibility of a #2 guard joining Haley in the backcourt to provide quickness and shooting ability, but maybe that player emerges somewhere during our non-conference season. I hope that happens.
Won't it be exciting to see who comes out on the court on November 2nd.? The mystery is part of my excitement. You can bet that whoever starts is there for a reason which Tara has carefully thought out, especially after all the practices and combinations observed.

mike emailed back to say that the game was not in the original ticket package because it was added late. the csun tix should go out in the next day or 2.

Absolutely on Betts, but I would be shocked (pleasantly) if Tara started her against Vanguard. I love Betts and see her playing more and more as the season progresses.

Trying to imagine what happens when Sienna Betts and Jazzy Davidson come aboard--a strongly likelihood--in 2025, the current #5 and #1 in their class.
They could give us a new look: absurd height and length at the 3 (Jazzy), 4 (Sienna), and 5 (Sienna's sister Lauren.)

Tara did some water skiing in the offseason. I thought this was a fun interview to listen to that might shed some light on this season. It's a good call out that Ashten and Fran are being great mentors in practice. Tara mentioned that Brooke and Kiki are greatly improved over the course of the summer and that the competition is fierce. I don't think we've gotten any answers apart from the fact that Hayley will be playing point forward, with Lepolo, Harriel, and Nivar providing the backup by committee.
